Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Chose Her, I Brought Him Down

The great hall looked perfect.

I stood at the center of it all, watching the final preparations for tomorrow's Alpha Ascension Ceremony. White roses climbed the stone pillars. Gold banners bearing Silvercrest's crest hung from the rafters. The long tables gleamed under candlelight, ready to host every regional Alpha in the Pacific Northwest.

This was it. The moment we'd worked toward for years.

I adjusted a crooked centerpiece, my hands steady despite the flutter in my chest. My wolf, Aria, hummed with pride deep inside me. *We did this,* she whispered. *We built all of this.*

And we had. Every alliance. Every training protocol. Every territorial negotiation that transformed Silvercrest from a failing pack into a powerhouse. My father Dalton, our Beta, had secured the diplomatic channels. My mother Meredith, our Head Healer, had revolutionized our medical corps. My brother Reid, our Gamma, had trained an elite warrior force. But the strategic vision? The careful architecture of Silvercrest's rise?

That was mine.

"Amora."

I turned. Coleson stood in the doorway, backlit by the hallway light. My fated mate. The Alpha I'd poured everything into. He looked striking in his formal black suit, his dark hair swept back, his green eyes fixed on me.

He crossed the hall in long strides and took my hand. His touch sent the familiar warmth of the mate bond through my skin. Even after all these years, it still felt like coming home.

"You look like a Luna tonight," he said softly.

I smiled. "Tomorrow's a big day."

"The biggest." He squeezed my hand. "None of this would exist without you. You know that, right?"

Something in his tone made Aria stir uneasily, but I pushed the feeling down. "We did it together."

He held my gaze for a long moment. Then he lifted my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles. "Get some rest. Tomorrow changes everything."

He walked away before I could respond.

I stood there, his words echoing in my head. *Tomorrow changes everything.* Of course it did. Tomorrow, Coleson would officially ascend as Alpha before the entire region. Tomorrow, Silvercrest would be recognized as one of the most powerful packs in the Pacific Northwest.

Tomorrow was supposed to be our triumph.

I didn't sleep that night. Aria paced restlessly in my mind, unable to settle. By the time the ceremony began, I'd convinced myself it was just nerves.

The great hall filled with Alphas and their entourages. I recognized Alpha Thorne from Ironveil, Alpha Kasper from Shadowridge, Alpha Miriam from Clearwater. They gathered in clusters, their power filling the room like static before a storm. My family stood near the front—Dad in his formal Beta regalia, Mom with her Healer's silver pin, Reid scanning the crowd with a Gamma's sharp attention.

I wore a deep blue gown that Mom had helped me pick out. Simple. Elegant. Appropriate for the future Luna of a rising pack.

Coleson took the stage.

The room fell silent. He looked out over the assembly, his Alpha aura rolling through the hall in waves. When he spoke, his voice carried to every corner.

"Tonight, we celebrate Silvercrest's ascension. We've fought for our place among the great packs of this region. We've earned the respect of our allies and the fear of our enemies."

Pride swelled in my chest. Aria lifted her head.

"But an Alpha is nothing without his Luna," Coleson continued. "And a pack's future depends on the strength of its bloodline."

My smile faltered. Something in his tone had shifted.

"Which is why," he said, his eyes finding mine across the crowded hall, "I must make a difficult choice tonight."

The warmth drained from my body.

"Amora Sanders has been my fated mate. The Moon Goddess paired us, and for years, I honored that bond. But the truth is—" He paused, and the silence stretched like a blade. "She cannot give me heirs. The healers confirmed it years ago. She is infertile."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. My vision blurred at the edges. That secret—the most private, painful wound I carried—spoken aloud like a public indictment.

Aria howled in my mind, a sound of pure anguish.

"An Alpha bloodline requires a Luna who can bear pups," Coleson said, his voice cold and clinical. "A real Luna. Which is why I, Coleson Ellis, Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack, reject you, Amora Sanders, daughter of Beta Dalton Sanders, as my mate and future Luna."

The words hit me like silver through the chest.

The mate bond didn't just break. It tore. It ripped through every cell in my body, shredding the connection the Moon Goddess herself had woven between us. I gasped, my knees buckling. The pain was supernatural, soul-deep, a fire burning from the inside out.

Someone caught my elbow. Reid. His face was murderous, his wolf barely contained.

"Instead," Coleson continued, as if I wasn't dying in front of him, "I will mark Emory Fox of the Nighthollow Pack as my chosen mate and Luna. She carries my pup. She will give Silvercrest the future it deserves."

A blonde woman stepped onto the stage, her hand resting on a visible baby bump. She wore white. She smiled.

The Alphas erupted into murmurs. Some looked shocked. Others nodded approvingly. Alpha Thorne smirked.

I couldn't breathe. The bond screamed in my chest, a phantom limb being severed over and over.

Reid's grip tightened. "We're leaving. Now."

But I couldn't move. I stood there, trembling, staring at the man I'd built an empire for. The man who'd once knelt in the rain outside my house for a week after my diagnosis, swearing the Moon Goddess's bond was enough. Swearing *I* was enough.

He didn't even look at me as Emory took his hand.

Dad appeared at my other side. "Come on, sweetheart."

They guided me out of the hall. My legs moved on autopilot. The bond tore with every step, leaving a trail of agony in its wake.

I made it to the private wing of the pack house before my knees gave out completely. Reid caught me, lowering me onto a bench in the hallway. Mom crouched in front of me, her Healer's hands glowing faintly as she tried to ease the supernatural pain.

It didn't help. Nothing could help. The Moon Goddess's bond had been severed with formal words in front of the entire region. The damage was absolute.

"I'm going to kill him," Reid growled. "I'm going to rip his throat out."

"No." My voice came out hoarse. "Don't."

"Amora—"

"I said no." I forced myself to sit up straight, even though every breath felt like broken glass. "Not here. Not now."

Footsteps echoed down the hall. I looked up.

Eleanor Ellis, Coleson's mother and the former Luna, approached with a teacup in her hands. She wore a cream-colored suit and a string of pearls. Her expression was perfectly composed.

"Amora," she said smoothly. "We need to talk."

Reid stepped between us, his wolf flashing in his eyes. "Back off."

Eleanor ignored him. "Privately."

I stood, waving Reid back. The bond still screamed, but I locked my knees and kept my spine straight. "Fine."

She led me to a sitting room off the main corridor and closed the door. She set the teacup on a side table and gestured to a chair. I didn't sit.

"I know tonight was difficult," Eleanor began.

Difficult. As if my fated mate hadn't just publicly destroyed me.

"But Silvercrest needs you," she continued. "Your strategic mind. Your family's expertise. Coleson made the right choice for the pack's future, but that doesn't mean we can afford to lose you entirely."

I stared at her. "What are you saying?"

She picked up the teacup and offered it to me. Champagne, not tea. "Stay. Remain as a ranked she-wolf. You can continue your work as our strategist. Coleson will have his Luna and his heirs, but you—" She smiled thinly. "You can still serve the pack you built. Quietly. It's an honor, really."

The words took a moment to sink in.

She wanted me to stay. To work in the shadows while another woman wore my title. To serve the pack I'd bled for while Coleson's chosen mate played Luna.

To be his kept secret.

Aria snarled, a vicious sound that rattled my bones.

I took the champagne glass from Eleanor's hand. She smiled, clearly thinking I was considering it.

I looked her dead in the eye.

Then I tipped the glass and poured the champagne onto the floor between us. It splashed across the Persian rug, golden and sparkling and utterly wasted.

Eleanor's smile vanished.

"You can tell your son," I said, my voice low and cold, "that I would rather be rogue than spend another second in this pack."

I turned and walked out.

My family was waiting in the hallway. I didn't have to say anything. They saw it in my face.

"Let's go home," Dad said quietly.

We walked out of the pack house together. The bond tore with every step, but I kept my head high and my spine straight.

Behind us, through the walls, I could hear the ceremony continuing. Cheers. Applause. The sound of Silvercrest celebrating its new Luna.

I didn't look back.
