Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Chose Another Luna Over Me

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, three days before my twenty-sixth birthday.

I stood in the Omega section wearing a dress I'd spent a week's wages on—midnight blue, fitted at the waist, the kind of thing that made me feel like I could belong somewhere other than the back row. The Silverfang Mate Ceremony hall smelled like cedar incense and too many wolves packed into one space. My wolf had been pacing under my skin all evening, restless in a way that felt like anticipation instead of dread. I told myself it was nerves. I told myself the Moon Goddess worked in her own time.

Judah Wagner ascended the ceremonial platform in his formal Alpha blacks, and every she-wolf in the room held her breath.

Including me.

His cedar-and-smoke scent rolled through the hall—the scent I'd been catching for three years, the one I'd convinced myself was meant for me even though the bond had never snapped into place. I'd trained his warriors. I'd covered his tactical errors in war councils while he took the credit. I'd reorganized his pack house supply chains twice and never put my name on the reports. I told myself devotion was its own kind of currency. That the Moon Goddess was just waiting for the right moment.

The platform lights caught his profile as he turned toward the crowd.

"Caroline Hunt," he said. His voice carried the Alpha resonance that made every wolf in the room feel it in their chest. "Step forward."

I stopped breathing.

Caroline rose from the Luna section—third row, center, where the high-ranking families sat. She wore white. Of course she wore white. Her blonde hair was pinned in an elaborate twist that probably took two hours and a professional. She walked up the platform steps like she'd been practicing, and maybe she had.

My wolf started to whine. A low, confused sound that vibrated in my ribcage.

Judah took Caroline's hand. He said something I couldn't hear over the rushing in my ears. Then he pulled her close, tilted her head to the side, and bit down on the junction of her neck and shoulder.

The mark flared gold under his mouth.

My wolf howled.

It was the kind of sound that shouldn't come out of a human throat—raw and shredding and so loud I thought the windows would crack. My vision went white at the edges. Pain radiated outward from my chest like something inside me was tearing in half, and I felt the Omega next to me flinch and step away. My knees buckled. I grabbed the back of the chair in front of me and held on because the alternative was hitting the floor.

The platform never turned in my direction.

Not once.

Judah kissed Caroline's forehead. The crowd erupted into applause. Someone in the front row whistled. My wolf kept howling, the sound trapped inside my skull now, and I could feel her starting to go dormant—that terrible, suffocating silence when a wolf gives up.

I made it to the parking lot on muscle memory alone.

The night air hit my face and I doubled over next to my car, hands braced on my knees, trying to breathe. My wolf surged upward in a last desperate attempt to do something, anything, and I felt the shift start before I could stop it—claws splitting through my fingertips, bone cracking in my jaw, a strangled growl tearing out of my chest that didn't sound like me at all.

I slammed my palms against the steering wheel and forced it back down.

The shift reversed with a snap that left me gasping. Blood dripped from my fingertips where the claws had broken skin. I stared at the red smears on the white leather and thought, absurdly, that I'd just ruined my father's gift.

Then I started crying.

Forty-five minutes. I sat in that car and cried like I was trying to drown, the kind of crying that leaves you hollow and headachy and too tired to care. I cried for the three years I'd spent believing I was building toward something. For every tactical failure I'd covered, every schedule I'd managed, every time I'd stood in the Omega section and told myself it was temporary. For the girl who'd walked into Silverfang at nineteen and thought a mate bond was something you could earn.

Then I stopped.

I pulled out my phone. Opened the Silverfang pack-house duty roster I'd been maintaining for three years—every warrior rotation, every training schedule, every covered-up mistake. My fingerprints were all over that file. It was the invisible architecture that kept Judah's command running smoothly while he smiled for the cameras.

I deleted it.

Every rotation. Every schedule. Every note. Gone.

The screen went blank. I turned the key in the ignition, and the engine purred to life like it had been waiting.

I drove away from Silverfang territory and I did not look back.

Six months later, I was standing in a cross-pack administrative office that smelled like old carpet and burnt coffee, staring at a pack-registration form I couldn't afford to file. Financially drained. Legally vulnerable. A rogue claim had already been attempted once—some wandering asshole who'd caught my scent at a gas station and decided an unregistered she-wolf was fair game. I'd gotten away, but barely.

The door opened behind me.

"Excuse me," a voice said. Warm. Polite. "Do you know if they validate parking here?"

I turned.

The man standing in the doorway was maybe twenty-three, twenty-four, with dark curly hair and a smile that looked like it had never met a bad day it couldn't talk its way around. He wore a slightly rumpled button-down and carried a folder stuffed with mismatched papers. He smelled like honey and cedar and something I couldn't quite place.

"They don't," I said.

He sighed dramatically. "Of course they don't. That's four dollars I'll never see again."

He walked up to the counter, set his folder down, and started sorting through the chaos inside it. I watched him pull out three intake forms, two expired IDs, and what looked like a grocery receipt.

"I'm Rowen," he said without looking up. "Rowen Alexander. Formerly of the Duskhollow Pack, currently of nowhere in particular."

"Duskhollow disbanded," I said.

"I know." He finally looked at me. His eyes were warm brown, the kind that crinkled at the corners when he smiled. "That's why I'm here. Apparently you need a pack registration to rent an apartment in this state, which seems excessive, but what do I know."

"You're wolfless," I said. It wasn't a question. I couldn't feel a wolf presence on him at all.

He shrugged. "Never shifted. Born that way, I guess. It's fine. I'm very charming to compensate."

I almost smiled. Almost.

"You need a contracted mate arrangement," I said. "For the registration."

"I do," he agreed. "You wouldn't happen to know anyone who—"

"I'll do it," I said.

Rowen blinked. "You'll—seriously?"

"Strictly platonic," I said. "Purely administrative. You need pack status, I need legal protection. We sign the papers, we split rent, we stay out of each other's way."

He studied me for a long moment, and something in his expression shifted—went quieter, more serious.

"Deal," he said. He held out his hand.

I shook it.

His palm was warm. The honey-cedar scent got stronger for just a second, then faded.

We signed the contracted mate papers that afternoon. We moved into a small apartment with two bedrooms and a kitchen that barely fit one person. The arrangement was transactional, emotionally airtight, and supposed to be temporary.

I told myself I would never be stupid enough to fall for someone again.

I was wrong.
