Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Smashed My Brother’s Ashes, I Left

I stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Simmons penthouse, watching the city lights blur through my tears. Seven years. Seven years of this cold, glittering cage Rafael had built around me. The dining table behind me was set with precision—crystal glasses, imported china, and a bottle of Château Margaux that cost more than most people's monthly rent. The candles I'd lit an hour ago were now halfway melted, their flames dancing in lonely patterns across the empty chairs.

The notification sound from my phone cut through the silence. I didn't need to look to know it was from Rafael. Still, I picked it up, a reflex born from years of desperate hope.

*"Kimberly is having another episode. Don't wait up."*

Just like that. Not even a full sentence. Not even a pretense of regret. I stared at the words until they blurred together. Another episode. Another night when his ex-wife's manufactured crisis mattered more than our anniversary. More than me.

I set the phone down with deliberate care, my movements mechanical. The silence of the penthouse pressed against me like a physical weight. I'd learned to navigate this silence, to make myself smaller in it, quieter. But tonight, something felt different. Tonight, the silence felt like a warning.

I sat down at the table, alone with the cooling food and the flickering candles. One by one, I reached out and extinguished them, watching as each flame struggled briefly before surrendering to darkness. The symbolism wasn't lost on me. I was extinguishing something too—the last ember of hope that had kept me warm through seven years of winter.

When the final candle died, I remained motionless, my hands folded in my lap. The city lights outside seemed to mock me with their brightness, their movement. I felt as still as the marble beneath my feet, as hollow as the crystal glasses catching the moonlight.

Then my phone rang.

"Mrs. Simmons? This is Dr. Hartwell from the ICU." Her voice was gentle, practiced in delivering news that would shatter worlds. "I'm afraid your brother's condition has deteriorated significantly. His vitals are collapsing. You should come right away."

I didn't remember standing. I didn't remember grabbing my purse or my coat. I only remembered the elevator's agonizing descent, each floor a countdown to what I already knew was coming. I called Rafael seventeen times during that ride. Seventeen times, his call went straight to voicemail. Seventeen times, I heard the automated message that he was unavailable.

In the hospital corridor, the fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like angry wasps. Dr. Hartwell met me outside Jase's room, her eyes conveying what her words couldn't. "He's asking for you," she said softly.

Jase looked so small in that bed, his body connected to machines that had kept him alive for years. Machines that Rafael's money had paid for. Machines that had chained me to a marriage built on ice and contempt.

"Rosie," he whispered, his eyes finding mine. "You came."

I took his hand, so thin now, so cold. "I'm here, Jase. I'm right here."

The heart monitor began its desperate, erratic dance. Nurses rushed in, but I waved them back. This moment was ours. Just us, like when we were kids and the world was small enough for just the two of us.

"I'm sorry," he said, his voice barely audible. "For everything. For what he did to you. For making you stay."

"Don't," I whispered, squeezing his hand tighter. "You never made me do anything. You loved me. That's all that matters."

At 11:47 PM, the monitor gave a single, long, continuous tone. The nurses moved in, but I already knew. Jase was gone. The last person who truly loved me, who saw me as more than a convenient replacement or a transaction, was gone.

I left the hospital at 2 AM, my body moving on autopilot. The penthouse was exactly as I'd left it, except now it felt like a mausoleum. I moved through the rooms like a ghost, touching nothing, claiming nothing. In our bedroom—no, Rafael's bedroom—I retrieved the small box from the back of my closet. Inside was my diary, the one place I'd documented everything. The miscarriage. The loneliness. The slow death of my soul.

I packed lightly. A few documents. Jase's photograph. The diary. Nothing that Rafael had bought me. Nothing that tied me to this life of quiet desperation.

At his desk, I found the divorce papers he'd left out months ago, a tacit acknowledgment that our marriage was already over. I signed them without reading them, without asking for a single cent of alimony. I didn't want his money. I never had.

I placed the papers squarely in the center of his desk, where he couldn't miss them. Then I walked out, closing the door softly behind me. I didn't look back. There was nothing left to see.
