Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Slashed My Throat, I Exposed Them

The memo came into my inbox by accident. Someone at the county office hit "reply all" instead of forwarding it privately, and there it was, sitting between a lunch order and a maintenance notice.

FELLOWSHIP SLOT — MANHATTAN STATE NETWORK — REASSIGNED TO D. CRUZ. RECOMMENDATION OVERRIDE APPROVED.

Signed, C. Stone.

My husband's name. My husband's handwriting, scanned in blue ink at the bottom.

I read it once. Then I read it again, slower, like reading it twice would make it say something different. It didn't. I pressed two fingers to my throat without noticing I was doing it, a habit I'd had since I was a kid trying to steady my breath before going on air.

Third time. This was the third time.

I didn't cry. I didn't call anyone. I just sat at my station desk with the memo glowing on the screen and felt something in me finish clicking shut. Not breaking. Closing. Like a lock I'd been testing for years finally caught.

That night I brought the printed page home and set it on the kitchen counter in front of Connor before he'd even taken off his coat.

"Dani got my slot," I said. "Again. Your name's on the override."

He looked at it for a long moment, unhurried, the way he looked at everything. Then he looked at me. "You're reading that wrong, Vera."

"There's nothing else it could say."

"There's context you don't have." He set his keys down on the counter, squared them with the edge, like the world would stay orderly if the keys were straight enough. "I was trying to protect you from a program that wasn't ready for you yet. You'd have been eaten alive down there."

"Three times, Connor."

"Because I love you." His voice stayed even, almost gentle, the tone he used when he wanted me to hear how reasonable he was being. "You don't see the whole picture. You never have."

Something in me that used to soften at that tone didn't soften now.

"I want a divorce."

I'd never said the word out loud before. It came out smaller than I expected, but it landed hard enough that he actually went quiet. He looked at me for a long time — not angry, not pleading, just looking, like he was recalculating something behind his eyes. Then he turned and went to bed without another word.

In the morning he left for work like any other day. I heard the front door close. Then I heard the deadbolt turn from the outside.

I tried it twice before I believed it.

The apartment, once I understood what had happened, told its own story. My phone wasn't on the charger where I'd left it. The router was gone from the shelf, its cord coiled neatly beside the empty space like he'd taken the time to be tidy about it. In the drawer where I kept my station recordings, there was nothing — not even dust, like someone had wiped it down after clearing it out. My study binders for the fellowship exam were gone too; I found the shredder bin full to the brim in the hall closet. My contact book, the one with Maisie's number and my mother's doctor and everyone else who mattered, had vanished from the side table.

I walked through my own home cataloging what was missing like I was taking inventory of a stranger's crime scene. I already knew this was possible. I'd known it for a while, in the part of my mind I hadn't let myself listen to. But knowing and seeing the proof laid out in empty drawers were two different things.

I wrote Maisie a note on the back of a grocery receipt — the only paper I could find — and slipped it to Mrs. Feld next door, the older woman who collected mail every morning like clockwork and liked to talk about her grandchildren longer than necessary. I asked her to mail it for me.

Connor had it by that afternoon. He must have been watching Mrs. Feld's routine longer than I wanted to think about. That evening he came home and took the notebooks off my desk, then the pens, then — and this was the one that made my chest go tight — the small cassette recorder from childhood, the one with the sticker half peeled off, the one that had nothing to do with the fellowship at all. He just wanted every instrument I had for making a sound of my own gone.

Two days after that, he told me my mother was in the hospital.

He told me like a man presenting terms across a negotiating table, standing in the doorway with his coat still on.

"She collapsed Tuesday," he said. "They need to operate this week. It's expensive, Vera. More than she has."

Two days. My mother had been lying in a hospital bed for two days, and I hadn't known, because he'd made sure I couldn't.
