Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Forced Me Onto Broken Glass

I learned a long time ago not to look up. Not at the faces. Not at the jewelry. Not at the way the women at table nine glanced at my collar and then away.

The restaurant sat right on the water. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Candlelight on every table. Plates that cost more than my rent. I carried the trays and kept my eyes down.

My name is Raelynn Porter. I'm thirty-two. Under my sleeves, my skin is a map of a night I don't talk about. Ten years ago I was a wife. I was pregnant. I'm neither of those things now — except the mother part. That part stayed.

"Table seven, Raelynn," the manager said. "VIP. Hurry up."

I nodded and went.

The wine was already breathing on the table. Two glasses. A man with his back to the window — broad shoulders, dark jacket. Across from him, a woman with hair like a shampoo ad and a smile off a magazine spread.

I set down the appetizer. Then the man looked up.

Weston Grant.

My hands didn't drop the plate. I want credit for that. Some part of me — the part that spent ten years learning to be invisible — just kept moving, straightening the silverware, fixing the napkin.

He was a tech billionaire now. The whole city knew it. I'd seen his face on billboards, and on the pharmacy TV while I stood in line with Charleigh's prescription in my hand.

He didn't recognize me. His eyes slid over me the way they slide over furniture.

The woman did.

"Raelynn," Kaeli Nichols said. Slow, like she was tasting something sweet. "My God. It's really you."

She lifted her glass. And she tipped it.

Red wine ran across the cloth and down my front. It soaked into my uniform, into the collar, into cheap white cotton that never held up anyway.

"Oh no." Loud enough for the whole room. "Look what you did. You clumsy — God, do you even watch where you're going?"

The manager was already crossing the floor. Kaeli waved him off and turned to two women at the next table. Friends. Employees. Whatever they were.

"Help her," she said sweetly. "Check the damage."

Then the hands were on me. Fingers hooked into my collar. A tug. Buttons popping. A sleeve yanked down so hard my shoulder burned.

Air on my chest. Air on my arms.

The scars came out. The room went quiet in that particular way — not silent, but the way a restaurant goes when everyone stops chewing at the same time. A woman at table four put her hand over her mouth. A man by the bar turned his chair around to see better.

I have a ridge of scar tissue that runs from under my jaw down across my chest and along both arms. The skin doesn't bend right. It never will.

I stood there with my uniform open, and I didn't cover myself. Covering myself was already too late.

Weston looked. Really looked. Ten seconds of it — long enough to see the scars, do the math, know exactly who I was.

His face didn't crack. It closed.

"Get her out of my sight," he said to the manager. Flat. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

Kaeli smiled down at her napkin. Small and clean. Just for me.

The manager fired me by the service door. He was sorry about it. He was also holding my check and not handing it over.

"You understand," he said.

I understood.

The alley behind the restaurant smelled like rain and old grease. Water ran off the gutter and hit the dumpster lid like something being tapped out. I put my back against the brick.

I didn't cry. I stopped crying years ago.

My thumb found the inside of my left wrist. Scar there too. It's the first place I touch, always. I don't decide to do it anymore.

Four days. The hospital bill is due in four days. The second notice came Tuesday and used the word suspended, which is a polite word for we will stop.

Charleigh is nine. She draws oceans in a little journal. She puts a hand on her chest when she climbs the stairs and says she's just a little tired. She has never once asked about my face.

I pulled my collar up. I tucked in what was left of the uniform so the rip wouldn't show. It didn't really work.

At the bus stop, an old man in a Seahawks hat looked at me, then looked at his shoes. That's the usual order.

The bus came. I sat in the back by the window and closed my eyes and did the math again. The shifts. The hours. The number that would never be enough.

Across the street, a man in a black coat stood on the corner, watching the restaurant windows.

I didn't think anything of it.

I should have.
