Chapter 1 of A Reckoning on Lancaster Territory

I was suffocating, and they were watching a show.

Harrison Vaughn's adopted sister, Colleen, was smiling as she watched me struggle.

She knew full well that I had severe allergic asthma and was especially sensitive to specific pollens and smoke.

But at the party on the Hamptons estate, she’d deliberately led me into this glasshouse, where the air was a suffocating mix of rare pollens and thick cigar smoke.

My chest immediately felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand.

I reached for the emergency inhaler in my clutch, and the moment my fingertips touched it, my blood ran cold.

It was empty.

I collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, my lungs burning as if they were on fire.

Colleen crouched beside me, gently swirling the champagne in her glass.

"You're always so dramatic, Thea. It's just a little pollen. There's no need to act like you're about to die," she murmured, her voice a silken thread of faux concern. "You're too fragile, Thea. You need to learn to handle stress."

My gaze found Harrison, my vision already starting to blur.

"Harrison," I choked out, each syllable a ragged wheeze torn from my throat. "Get my backup inhaler... in your pocket... I need it now..."

He just frowned.

"Don't you think you're overreacting?" he asked coldly.

"I've never seen anyone nearly die from a little pollen. Colleen is right, you're always seeking attention. Tonight is huge for my family. Do you have to make a scene?"

Hope died in my chest.

I fumbled for my phone, dialing my mother's number on pure survival instinct.

"Mom," I cried, barely able to make a sound.

"I've been set up... I can't breathe."

My voice was barely a ghost of a sound, frayed with pain.

Harrison's friends reacted faster than he did.

One of them snatched my phone, hanging up before anyone could answer. Another one barked out a laugh, as if he’d just witnessed the world’s most pathetic magic trick.

"For God's sake, are you kidding me?" someone sneered. "Your fiancée runs into a little trouble, and her first instinct is to call her mommy?"

Another man swirled the whiskey in his glass and chimed in with a shake of his head. "Harrison, this is absurdly childish. We're adults, this is the Hamptons social scene, not a kindergarten. What's next? Is she going to cry for her nanny to come change her diaper?"

A few light chuckles followed, the sounds so frivolous and careless they felt like lashes against my dignity.

One of them scoffed, pointing out past the glasshouse to the manicured lawn. "Does she really think one phone call can magically teleport her mom here? Unless her mom can fly, this is just another attention-grabbing stunt."

The laughter spread again.

Harrison turned his back on me. His shoulders went rigid with humiliation, and he said nothing, letting the chorus of mockery swell behind him.

None of them knew that the woman he’d so casually dismissed was the true owner of this estate and this entire stretch of the Long Island coastline.

Every inch of this estate's lawn was part of my family's trust, patrolled by my family's security team.

This was Lancaster territory, and on this land, no one did business for long without our family’s blessing.

My vision blurred again, my chest seized violently, and the air tore uselessly at my throat, making the ragged sound of a broken bellows.

And in their eyes, I was just a dramatic girl trying to control her boyfriend by faking an illness.

Not a Lancaster heiress struggling for her life on her own land.

Colleen moved closer, her tone calm, professional, and tinged with an almost scientific detachment.

"You're breathing," she stated matter-of-factly. "You can still talk. That alone proves your airway isn't completely blocked. This isn't a physiological asthma attack, Thea."

She tilted her head, as if observing an interesting clinical case. "Many adult respiratory distress episodes are triggered by deep-seated anxiety. Once a panic attack hits, your brain tricks your body into believing you're suffocating."

She offered a small, apologetic smile. "Your inhaler was already empty. That's why I suggested a different approach, one that doesn't deepen your psychological dependency."

She spread her hands, her posture calm and confident, as if she were the authority here. "I just published a paper in a Yale psychology journal on treating anxiety-induced somatic symptoms with exposure therapy. This is clinically proven."

I mustered all my strength to look up at Harrison, my fingers clawing weakly at my chest, nails digging into my flesh.

"Harrison," I rasped, each word like sandpaper on my throat. "That's... nonsense... Please. Get me another inhaler. I can't breathe."

This time, his expression wavered.

His gaze swept over my pale face and my shoulders, which were heaving violently with every breath. He instinctively took two steps toward me.

Before he could get close, Colleen stepped in front of him, gently raising a hand to stop him.

"Harrison," she said calmly, her voice steady and reliable, "that's the entire point."

She turned to me, crouching slightly to appear more approachable and empathetic.

"You can't keep telling yourself you're not going to make it," she said softly. "When you convince yourself you can't breathe, your body reacts to that false signal. Panic magnifies every symptom, Thea."

She gave a faint smile, like a patient teacher with a stubborn student.

"What you're experiencing isn't danger, it's fear. And the only way to conquer it is to face it head-on."

She nodded, glancing around as if explaining a common fact to the audience.

"It's called exposure therapy. You're teaching your nervous system that not every discomfort requires medication. Once you get through this on your own, you'll become stronger, healthier, and less reliant on your inhaler."

Her tone was gentle and confident, carrying an authority that left no room for argument.

"I'm helping you," she added, her gaze earnest. "You'll thank me for this later, once you get through it."

Around us, several guests nodded. They were the so-called elite, believers in "willpower" and "self-control," and Colleen's theory perfectly catered to their prejudices.

Harrison listened in silence.

Then he slowly exhaled, the tension in his shoulders easing as his doubt was replaced by a twisted kind of understanding.

"You're panicking again," he said, though his voice was less harsh now. "If you keep telling yourself you can't breathe, of course you're going to feel worse."

He glanced at Colleen, his eyes filled with blind trust in his sister's professional judgment.

"She's not trying to hurt you," he said firmly. "She's helping you break this vicious cycle. You need to grow up, Thea."

After a brief hesitation, he stepped back to his original position, crossing his arms and watching my desperate struggle for air.

"Just hold on," he added. "This is for your own good."

The ground beneath me spun, and my legs finally gave out.

I crumpled to my knees, my vision going black as a burning tightness seized my lungs.

Someone nearby let out an awkward laugh, clearly unsure if this was real or just uncomfortable performance art.

A friend with a shred of conscience remaining hesitated, taking half a step forward, seeming to want to say something—

Before he could speak, Colleen spoke again, her voice laced with practiced control.

"Don't intervene," she commanded, gentle but firm.

"If you rush over now, you'll only reinforce her somatization, making her think she can get attention just by making a scene."

Her eyes remained fixed on me, analytical and cold, like a scientist observing a specimen’s final moments.

"She needs to get over this hump on her own."
