Chapter 1 of 96 Movie Tickets to Betrayal

I gave up my career to be the perfect wife for Aaron.

For ten years, I managed our home while he built his empire.

He always told me he suffered from severe claustrophobia and hated movie theaters.

He promised he would rather spend his free time walking in the park with me.

When his company faced a crisis, I sold my mother's jewelry to keep us afloat.

Aaron swore I was the only woman who truly understood him.

I believed every single word he said.

Until yesterday, when I logged into our shared email to pay a utility bill.

A notification popped up, warning that his cinema loyalty points were expiring.

My hands trembled as I opened the attached purchase history.

Every Tuesday for the last two years, he had booked seats E7 and E8.

I bought a ticket for seat E9 for tonight's showing.

I sat in the dark theater, holding my breath as Aaron walked in.

He was holding a young woman's hand, gently guiding her to seat E8.

"I didn't get the couple's combo this time," Aaron whispered to her, totally unaware I was sitting right beside them.

"Why not?" the woman asked, pouting as she leaned into his shoulder.

"Grace is starting to check the accounts at home, so I have to be careful," he chuckled softly.

"When are you actually going to divorce her?"

"Why would I? She has no life of her own, she’ll never leave me."

The iPad chimed on the entryway table while I was fastening the brass locks on my husband's briefcase.

I almost ignored it. Tuesday mornings had followed the same choreography for ten years: coffee at seven, folders in the rear sleeve, charger in the side pocket, and Aaron standing before the hallway mirror while I made sure his life ran smoothly.

"Put the gray folders behind the laptop," he said, tightening his navy silk tie.

"Already done."

"The financial summaries too?"

"Printed, collated, and tabbed."

He checked his profile in the mirror and smiled at himself. "Perfect. Today is going to be hell."

"The weekly board meeting?"

"Six hours in that windowless room with five investors questioning every projection." He rolled his shoulders as if the thought alone hurt. "My chest is already tightening."

I handed him his black coffee. "Step into the hall if you need air."

"I can't walk out in front of the board, Grace. Not with the funding round this close." He took the mug, then lowered his voice. "You know what enclosed spaces do to me."

I did. Or I thought I did.

For a decade, Aaron's claustrophobia had shaped our marriage. We took stairs instead of crowded elevators. We left restaurants if our table sat too close to the wall. We had not entered a movie theater since our honeymoon, when he lasted twenty minutes before stumbling into the lobby, pale and sweating.

I had never complained. Loving someone meant learning the shape of his fear and making room around it.

"No elevators, no packed restaurants, no theaters," I said lightly. "I remember."

"And I appreciate that." He kissed my forehead. "You're my anchor."

The phrase once warmed me. That morning, it felt rehearsed.

He set the travel mug beside the briefcase and reached for my hand. "If you hadn't mortgaged your condo to fund my first prototype, there wouldn't be a company to save today."

"We built it together."

"You gave me the start," he corrected. "I did the rest."

The words landed oddly. He seemed to hear it too, because he squeezed my fingers and added, "I mean, we survived the hard years together. I owe you everything."

Ten years earlier, I had sold my grandmother's jewelry, drained my savings, and borrowed against the small apartment my parents left me. I handled invoices from our studio kitchen while Aaron soldered circuit boards on the dining table. When the first batch failed, I called every customer personally and arranged replacements. When his second investor walked away, I worked nights to cover payroll.

Lately, Aaron described those years as if I had merely written one convenient check.

"Bring home dinner," I said, pulling my hand free to straighten his lapel.

"I'll be late. Don't wait up."

"Another emergency session?"

"Probably. The board wants every number explained twice." He lifted the briefcase. "And please don't move money from the household account today. Cash flow is tight until the round closes."

"I only asked why the grocery card was declined yesterday."

"Temporary banking issue." His answer came too quickly. "Use the backup card if you need anything."

The backup card had a five-hundred-dollar limit. Aaron spent more than that on one dinner with investors.

He opened the front door, letting cold November air sweep across the hardwood.

"Love you," he called.

"Love you too."

The door clicked shut.

I stood there for a moment, listening to his car reverse out of the driveway. Then the iPad chimed again.

The screen glowed on the console table. Aaron had left it unlocked, unusual for a man who changed his passwords every week. A banner stretched across the top.

Southside Cinema: Your loyalty points expire soon.

I stared at it.

At first, my mind supplied innocent explanations. A marketing email. An account opened years ago. Someone had entered the wrong address. Then I noticed the preview beneath the subject line.

Thank you for your ninety-fourth and ninety-fifth ticket purchases. Your next booking is confirmed for today.

My fingers went cold.

I tapped the banner.

The cinema account opened without asking for a password. Aaron's name appeared at the top beside a gold VIP badge. Beneath it sat a list of Tuesday bookings stretching back almost two years. Two seats every time. Always Theater 4. Always E7 and E8.

Today's booking began at ten-thirty in the morning, exactly when he claimed he would be sealed inside a boardroom.

I scrolled faster. March, April, May. Every other Tuesday. Sometimes every Tuesday. Ninety-five tickets already used, with the ninety-sixth scheduled for today.

A charge history showed upgraded seats, private screenings, and concession vouchers. The man who made me clip grocery coupons had spent thousands of dollars sitting in the dark.

I called his office.

"Executive reception," a woman answered.

"This is Grace Mills. May I speak with Aaron?"

A pause. Keyboard clicks. "Mr. Mills isn't expected until this afternoon. His calendar shows an external strategy meeting."

"Is the board meeting this morning?"

"No, ma'am. The board moved its session to tomorrow."

The room seemed to tilt.

"Thank you," I said, and ended the call before my voice changed.

On the cinema page, a small map displayed the seating chart. E7 and E8 were sold. E9, directly beside them, remained open.

I selected it.

The purchase screen asked whether I wanted to use the household card saved to Aaron's account.

I chose my own card instead.

When the confirmation appeared, I took a screenshot, forwarded the entire booking history to a private email address, and locked the iPad exactly as I had found it.

Then I went upstairs, put on the brown coat Aaron said made me look ordinary, and slipped my wedding ring beneath my glove.

Before leaving, I opened the hall closet and found Aaron's old panic kit on the top shelf: breathing strips, medication, and the folded card his therapist had supposedly given him. The prescription bottle had expired eight years earlier and was still sealed. I photographed it, not yet knowing whether it was evidence or merely another prop in a marriage built around his convenience.

At ten-fifteen, I parked beneath the Southside Cinema sign.

For the first time in ten years, I was about to enter the place my husband claimed he could never endure.

My ticket read Row E, Seat 9.
