Chapter 1 of You Stole My Money, I Took Your Life

My spine pressed hard against the freezing iron backrest of the interrogation chair. The sterile air of the precinct did nothing to cool the suffocating tension in the room.

"I want her arrested today, Inspector." David slapped his palm flat against the scarred metal table. "She crossed the line."

Inspector Miller leaned back, folding his arms. "Mr. Monroe, you are asking me to charge your wife with a felony based on a piece of plastic."

"It is not just plastic." David shoved a silver flash drive across the table. "It contains undeniable proof. She hacked my private servers. She stole confidential client data and stalked my movements."

I stared at the man I had been married to for five years. His jaw was set, his expensive tailored suit entirely out of place in the grimy precinct room. He looked pristine, completely detached from the absolute ruin he was trying to inflict upon me.

"I didn't hack anything," I said, keeping my voice level. "You left your email open on the kitchen laptop."

"Shut up, Clara." He glared at me. "You are a paranoid, invasive psycho. You bugged my office."

"I asked you who you were texting at two in the morning," I replied. "That doesn't make me a hacker."

"Play the drive, Miller." David tapped the table. "You will see the keylogger files she installed. I demand a full investigation."

Miller picked up the drive. He didn't look convinced, but he swiveled his laptop around so we could all see the screen. "If this is a waste of my time, Mr. Monroe, I will not be pleased."

Miller inserted the silver stick into the port.

David smirked at me. A confident, arrogant little twist of his lips. "You should have just signed the divorce papers and walked away with nothing. Now you are going to jail."

I didn't answer. I just watched the laptop screen.

A folder popped up. Miller clicked on the single video file inside.

The media player opened. The screen went black for a second, then flared to life.

It wasn't a spreadsheet. It wasn't a list of client emails or lines of code. It was a high-definition, full-color view of my master bedroom.

My stomach gave a violent, uncontrollable lurch. The nausea hit me so fast I had to swallow hard to keep from being sick right there on the table.

On the screen, the heavy oak door of our bedroom swung open. David walked in. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His tie was undone.

Right behind him was Chloe.

"What the hell?" David's voice cracked. He leaned forward, squinting at the screen as if his eyes were deceiving him.

I dug my fingernails into my knees. Through the fabric of my slacks, I pinched my own skin until I felt the sharp sting of pain. It was the only way to anchor myself.

On the video, Chloe giggled. She tossed her purse onto my vanity table. The audio was crystal clear.

"Are you sure she will not come home early?" Chloe's voice echoed from the laptop speakers.

"Clara is at her mother's," the digital version of my husband answered. "We have the whole weekend."

I stared at David's familiar profile on the monitor. The way he pulled her against his chest. The way his hands roamed over her body.

Red crescent marks formed on my knees under my tightly gripped fingers.

"Turn it off," David ordered, his face draining of all color.

Miller didn't touch the keyboard. "This doesn't look like a keylogger file, Mr. Monroe."

"I said turn it off!" David reached across the table.

Miller blocked his hand with a swift chop of his forearm. "This is submitted evidence. Sit down."

"That is my assistant," David stammered. He looked at me, panic replacing his previous arrogance. "Clara, what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything." I forced a laugh. It sounded hollow, harsh, and completely wrong for the room. "You brought the drive, David. You handed it to the police."

"You swapped it!" he yelled. "You broke into my briefcase and swapped the drives!"

"Why would I need to?" I asked softly. "I didn't even know this video existed."

Miller tapped the corner of the screen with his pen. "There is a cloud timestamp right here. Look at the date."

I forced my eyes to focus on the glowing white numbers in the bottom right corner.

"May 14th," I read aloud. My voice shook. "That was my birthday weekend."

"Clara, listen to me..."

"Let it play, Inspector," I said, cutting him off.

The video jumped to the next clip. A different date. June 3rd.

David and Chloe again. This time falling onto my expensive silk sheets.

"I love this house," Chloe murmured on the recording. "When are you going to make her move out?"

"Soon," David's recorded voice replied. "I just need to secure the assets first. She will not know what hit her."

I unclenched my jaw. The physical ache in my teeth was intense.

"Secure the assets," I repeated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "That is why you wanted me arrested today. If I am in jail, you freeze the joint accounts."

"That is a lie," David sputtered. "You are twisting things."

"Seems pretty straightforward to me, Mr. Monroe," Miller noted dryly.

"Every weekend," I whispered, ignoring them both. "For six months. Every time I went out of town to care for my sick father, you brought her into our bed."

"It is a deepfake!" David shouted. He stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the concrete floor. "She manufactured this to ruin me!"

Miller raised an eyebrow. "You think your wife hired a special effects team to fake six months of security footage?"

"She is crazy! I told you she is crazy!" David pointed at the screen. "That isn't me!"

On the monitor, David moaned Chloe's name.

"You really are stupid, David," I said, feeling nothing but cold disgust. "You gathered all your little trophies into one folder and forgot which flash drive you grabbed from your safe."

"Shut up!" he roared.

"Mr. Monroe, lower your voice," Miller warned, his tone hardening.

"You have no right to watch this!" David lunged for the laptop again.

Miller shoved him back hard. "Interfering with a police investigation is an actual crime. I suggest you back away."

"It is my property!" David's chest heaved. Sweat beaded on his forehead. "Give it back!"

"You explicitly requested I review this material," Miller said calmly. "And honestly? It looks like the only crime here is adultery. Which isn't a police matter."

"She set me up!" David slammed his fist on the table.

"Did I force you to sleep with your assistant, David?" I asked. "Did I force you to bring her into our home?"

"You never paid attention to me!" he spat. "You were always gone!"

I laughed again. The sound scraped my throat. "I was at the hospital. Watching my father die."

David flinched, but the anger quickly returned to his eyes. "I want my lawyer."

"Call him," Miller offered. "But this drive stays in evidence until I close the file."

"I am taking it." David stepped around the table, his hands curling into fists.

"David, do not be an idiot," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs.

He ignored me. He reached for the laptop, his eyes wild with desperation. He grabbed the silver drive, yanking it sideways.

Before he could pull it free from the USB port, a massive force struck the interrogation room door. The heavy iron hinges groaned.

The door burst inward, swinging violently and slamming against the concrete wall with a deafening crash, revealing the one man who could utterly destroy his plan.
