Wrong Girl to Mess With

The pink diamond caught the light like captured starfire as Bradley lifted it from its velvet throne, his hands trembling with the reverence reserved for objects worth more than most people's houses. The whispers around us had shifted from dismissive to calculating, but I kept my focus on Megan's increasingly pale face.

"Four point eight million," she repeated, the words coming out like a prayer or a curse. Her perfectly applied lipstick had smudged slightly at the corner, a tiny crack in her flawless facade.

I smiled, letting the silence stretch between us like a blade. "Did I stutter?"

That's when something snapped behind her eyes.

"You little—" Megan's composure shattered completely. Her manicured nails, filed to lethal points and painted the color of fresh blood, came slashing toward my face with the fury of someone who'd never been denied anything in her privileged life.

But years of working in surgical suites had honed my reflexes to razor precision. Time seemed to slow as I watched her hand arc through the air, her Cartier bracelet catching the overhead lights. I sidestepped with the fluid grace that came from countless hours spent navigating crisis situations where a split second could mean the difference between life and death.

Megan's momentum carried her past me, her designer heels skidding on the polished marble. She crashed into the display case behind me with a sound like thunder breaking.

Glass exploded outward in a shower of crystal fragments. Her Hermès bag—probably worth more than most people's cars—went flying across the showroom floor, its contents scattering like expensive confetti. Lipstick, credit cards, and what looked like a small pharmacy's worth of prescription bottles rolled across the marble.

The store erupted in gasps and startled cries. Someone screamed. Bradley dropped the pink diamond back into its case with a clatter that made everyone wince.

"Oh my God!" a woman shrieked from somewhere behind the watch display.

"Call security!" another voice demanded.

Megan lay sprawled among the wreckage of shattered glass and scattered jewelry, her Chanel suit torn at the shoulder, a thin line of blood trickling from a cut on her palm. Her perfectly styled hair had come undone, blonde strands falling across her face in a way that would have horrified her stylist.

For a moment, she just stared up at me from the floor, shock and disbelief warring across her features. Then the reality of her situation seemed to hit her all at once.

"You'll pay for this!" she screamed, her voice cracking with rage and humiliation. She struggled to her feet, glass crunching under her heels, her face flushed with fury. "When Sebastian finds out what you've done—when he sees what you are—"

"Go ahead," I said, my voice cutting through her hysteria with surgical precision. I crouched down until we were eye level, close enough to see the mascara starting to smudge beneath her lashes. "Call him. Tell him exactly what you did to his ACTUAL fiancée. I'll wait."

The challenge hung in the air between us like a gauntlet thrown down. Megan's mouth opened and closed soundlessly, her earlier bravado evaporating in the face of my calm certainty.

I pulled out my phone with deliberate slowness, my fingers steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through my system. The store held its breath as I scrolled through my contacts, found what I was looking for, and began typing.

The message was simple, accompanied by a screenshot of Megan's Instagram profile—all perfectly curated photos of charity galas and society events, her bio declaring her "Future Mrs. Knight" in elegant script.

"Found her. She's... entertaining."

I hit send and slipped the phone back into my pocket. Around us, the whispers had started again, but now they carried a different quality—uncertainty, fear, the sudden realization that they might be witnessing something far more dangerous than a simple catfight over jewelry.

My phone buzzed almost immediately. I glanced at the screen, and a cold smile tugged at the corners of my mouth.

"Don't move. I'm on my way. —D"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. I straightened slowly, brushing an imaginary speck of dust from my jeans, and looked down at Megan who was still struggling to collect herself from the floor.

"You might want to clean yourself up," I said conversationally. "Company's coming."

As if summoned by my words, the sound of engines rumbled from outside—deep, powerful, the kind of sound that money made when it moved through the world with purpose. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see a convoy of black Maybach SUVs pulling up to the curb in perfect formation.

The whispers died completely.

Megan followed my gaze to the street, and whatever color had returned to her cheeks drained away entirely. Her hands shook as she pressed them against the marble floor, trying to push herself upright.

"Who..." she whispered, her voice barely audible above the sudden silence that had fallen over the store. "Who are you?"

I tilted my head, studying her with the same clinical interest I might show a particularly fascinating specimen under a microscope. The fear in her eyes was almost palpable now, replacing the entitled rage that had driven her to attack me.

Bradley had gone completely still behind the counter, the pink diamond forgotten in his trembling hands. Other customers had begun backing toward the exits, their survival instincts finally overriding their curiosity.

The engines outside cut off in perfect synchronization, leaving only the sound of car doors slamming and footsteps on concrete. Heavy footsteps. Multiple sets. All moving with the kind of military precision that made smart people very, very nervous.

"That's a very good question, Megan," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the hushed store. "And I have a feeling you're about to get your answer."
