Chapter 1 of When My Husband's Mother Replaced Me With His Mistress

The dry cleaner's plastic crinkled under my fingers as I peeled it off Colson's third suit of the morning. Tuesday was always laundry day. Five suits, five shirts, five silk ties lined up on the velvet hangers like soldiers waiting for orders.

I had done this for six years. I liked doing it. It made me feel like a wife.

The walk-in closet smelled like cedar and his cologne. Soft yellow light spilled from the recessed bulbs in the ceiling. Outside the penthouse window, Manhattan went on with its morning—taxis honking forty floors below, the East River flat and gray.

I slid my hand into the inside breast pocket of his charcoal Brioni. A habit. He left receipts in there, business cards, the occasional Tic Tac.

My fingers closed around fabric.

Lace.

I pulled it out slowly. A scrap of nude silk and lace, balled up small. The tag said La Perla. Size two.

I wear a six.

There was a stain on the gusset. Dark, dried, rust-colored. I knew what it was. I have a body. I know what blood looks like when it's old.

I did not move.

I stood there in my bare feet on the heated marble floor and I counted the seconds the way my therapist taught me when I was nineteen and my mother was dying. One. Two. Three. The numbers were cold and clean and they did not let me feel anything.

I got to one hundred and eighty before I let myself breathe.

Leighton Willis. Colson's assistant. Doe-eyed Leighton with her breathy little laughs and her hand always on his sleeve. Size two. La Perla. The brand she'd asked me about at the Christmas party last year, fingering the hem of my robe and saying, *Oh, you have such good taste, Mrs. Burke.*

Mrs. Burke.

I folded the underwear back into the small ball it had been. I put it back in the pocket. I smoothed the lapel. I rehung the suit exactly where I'd found it, third from the left, between the navy and the black.

Then I walked out of the closet and closed the door behind me.

I did not cry. My face in the hallway mirror looked the same as it always did. Maybe a little paler. The pearl earrings he gave me on our second anniversary still caught the light.

I went downstairs and made coffee. The machine hissed. I watched it.

---

The doorman buzzed up at two in the afternoon.

"Registered letter for Mrs. Burke. Signature required."

I signed. The envelope was thick cream paper with the Freeman family crest embossed in the corner. My father's lawyers. I knew the seal the way other women know their children's faces.

I sat down at the kitchen island and slit it open with a butter knife.

I read it once.

I read it again.

*…results conclusive… genetic markers inconsistent… born at Lenox Hill on the same evening… switched in error… the biological Freeman daughter has been located… her name is Diana…*

My hand was very steady. I noticed that, the way you notice the weather.

Diana. Her name is Diana.

I was not Anaya Freeman. I had never been Anaya Freeman. The fortune that walked me down the aisle, the name on the wedding announcement in the Times, the face the Burke family tolerated because of the trust fund attached to it—none of it had ever been mine.

I folded the letter. Crease, crease, exactly along the lines it came in. I carried it down the hall to my study and opened the bottom drawer of the desk. I filed it under *Personal*, behind my passport.

Then I went back to the closet.

I stood there a long time. The Brioni hung where I had left it. The dresser was a few steps away, polished walnut, my jewelry box on top. I lifted the legal envelope from where I'd carried it back and set it on the dresser, dead center.

Two pieces of evidence. One marriage. One identity.

Both gone.

Something inside my chest went very, very quiet. Not numb. Quiet. Like a room after the music stops.

I did not scream. I had screamed before, years ago, over smaller things, and Colson had looked at me like I was a kettle that needed taking off the heat. I would not give him that again. I would not give him anything again.

I opened my nightstand drawer and took out a small leather notepad. The pen was tucked into the spine. I sat on the edge of the bed and wrote at the top of the first page, in clean block letters:

*EXIT.*

Under it I wrote: *Liquidate. Document. Disappear.*

I underlined each word once.

---

I met Kyra the next morning at the little café on Spring Street that does the burnt-honey lattes she pretends to hate. She was already there, in her oversized coat and the silver hoops she'd had since college, scrolling her phone with the focused fury she usually reserved for bad Yelp reviews.

She looked up when I sat down. Her face did the thing it always does when she's reading me—half a second of scan, eyes flicking from my mouth to my hands to my eyes.

"Talk," she said.

So I did.

I told her about the underwear. The size. The brand. The stain. I told her about the letter, and Diana, and the closet, and the one hundred and eighty seconds. I told her flat, like a grocery list.

She didn't interrupt. Her coffee cup was in both hands and her knuckles went white around it, and at one point I watched a muscle jump in her jaw, but she didn't say a word until I finished.

Then she set the cup down very carefully.

"Tell me what you need me to do."

No *oh my God*. No *that bastard*. No *are you sure*. Just that.

I loved her so much in that moment my throat almost closed.

I reached into my bag and slid the notepad across the table.

She read the first page. Her eyes went hard. Then she looked up at me, and for the first time in two days, I felt the floor under my feet again.

"Okay," she said softly. "Okay. We're going to be very, very quiet, and we're going to be very, very fast."

She picked up her coffee.

"And when we're done, Anaya—he is not going to know what hit him."

I didn't smile. I couldn't. But I nodded once, and outside the window the snow began to fall on Spring Street, soft and slow, covering everything.
