Chapter 1 of When My Fiancé Forced Me to Beg His Mistress

The Beverly Hills Grand Ballroom was the kind of place that made you feel like money was the only language worth speaking. Five hundred chandeliers—or maybe it just felt that way—threw gold light across five hundred people who wore their wealth like armor. The air smelled of gardenias and old champagne. Everyone smiled with their teeth.

I arrived alone.

My gown was navy, simple, no embellishment. I'd chosen it because Emmett once said I looked best when I didn't try too hard. I checked my phone in the car before I got out. Still nothing. Two days of silence. Two days of texts that sat there, delivered but not read, like letters slid under a door that nobody was standing behind.

I told myself he was busy. The Dean Corp quarterly review was this week. He got like this sometimes—tunnel vision, radio silence, then he'd surface and apologize with coffee and that slow smile of his, and I'd let it go because I always let it go.

I slipped my phone into my clutch and walked in.

The reserved table had my name on a small card. I sat, smoothed my napkin across my lap, and scanned the room the way I always did—quietly, without appearing to. It was a habit I'd had since childhood, growing up in rooms where the real power was never standing at the podium. I clocked the host committee near the stage, the auction director moving between tables with a clipboard and a tight expression, the clusters of LA's social elite doing what they always did: performing for each other.

No Emmett.

I touched the watch on my wrist. Simple, unbranded, a little scratched. My father gave it to me on my eighteenth birthday. It was the one thing I'd kept.

I ordered water and waited.

The auction moved through its lots with the practiced momentum of a well-oiled machine. Rare wine. A private island week. A sculpture that looked like a parking accident but sold for forty thousand dollars. I watched. I bid on nothing. I was here because Emmett had put our names on the guest list three weeks ago and said it would be good for appearances.

Then the auctioneer said my name.

I looked up.

'Lot forty-seven—a curated collection of rare impressionist works and certified jewelry, valued at two hundred million dollars—going to our winning bidder, Ms. Brooke Owens.'

The room gave a polite ripple of applause.

I didn't move.

I had not bid on lot forty-seven. I had not bid on anything. I reached for my phone under the table, opened my banking app, and felt the floor drop out from under me.

Zero. Every account. The joint account Emmett managed administratively. My personal savings. The investment account I'd been quietly building for three years. All of it. Zero.

The verification terminal at my table blinked red.

INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.

The auction director—Victor Hale, according to his name badge, a careful-looking man in his fifties with the expression of someone who already knew this was going to be a difficult evening—approached my table with his clipboard held against his chest like a shield.

'Ms. Owens,' he said quietly. 'We'll need to process payment.'

'There's been a mistake,' I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. 'I didn't place that bid.'

He looked at his clipboard. He looked at me. He didn't say anything.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Emmett walked in like he owned the building. Maybe he thought he did. He was in a dark suit, pocket square perfectly folded, that easy grin already in place—the one he used at charity events and dinner parties, the one that made rooms turn toward him like flowers toward a lamp.

Dalia Castillo was on his arm.

I knew her face from three photographs I'd found on his phone six months ago and told myself meant nothing. In person she was taller than I'd imagined, draped in a crimson gown that left one shoulder bare. She had the particular confidence of a woman who has decided she has already won.

Emmett steered her directly to my table. He spread his arms slightly, a gesture of theatrical warmth, and addressed the surrounding tables with the ease of a man giving a toast.

'Looks like my dear fiancée is having a little trouble with her tab.' He shook his head with fond amusement, like I was a child who'd overordered dessert. 'Anyone have a creative solution?'

Laughter. Actual laughter. Not much, but enough.

I stood. I moved to the edge of the table, away from the nearest ears, and I looked at him.

'What did you do to my accounts.'

It wasn't a question. He heard that.

His smile stayed on, but his eyes shifted—something behind them going flat and cold, the performance thinning just enough for me to see what was underneath it.

'They were always in my name administratively,' he said. Quiet. Just for me. 'You should have read the fine print, Brooke.'

Then he turned back to the room, lifted his champagne glass, and smiled like nothing had happened.

I stood very still.

The chandeliers kept throwing their gold light. The room kept humming. Dalia caught my eye over Emmett's shoulder and let one corner of her mouth lift—just barely, just enough.

I touched my watch.

I thought about my father.

And I did not look away.
