When My Father’s Killer Said I Belonged to Him

The nightclub is underground. Literally. We descend a marble staircase that spirals down two floors beneath a converted meatpacking warehouse. The music hits before the lights do—bass that vibrates through the soles of my heels.

Kylo's hand rests at the small of my back. Light. Possessive. A signal to everyone watching.

The VIP lounge is roped off behind frosted glass. Inside, leather booths curve around low tables scattered with bottles that cost more than my mother made in a month. Kylo's circle is already here. Trust-fund heirs. Hotel dynasty offspring. Men who've never been told no.

They look up when we enter. Smiles sharpen.

"Armstrong." A blond man in a tailored suit gestures to the booth. "Thought you weren't coming."

"I'm here." Kylo slides in. Pulls me down beside him.

I sit. Fold my hands in my lap. Become invisible.

The conversation flows around me. Stocks. Real estate. A yacht someone's father just bought. I don't speak. No one expects me to.

Then the blond man—Carter something, hedge fund money—leans forward. His eyes slide to me. "So Ivory." He draws out my name like it's a joke. "Still playing house with the Armstrongs?"

I smile. Say nothing.

"Must be nice," another man adds. Dark hair, expensive watch. "Free room and board. All you have to do is—" He makes a crude gesture.

Laughter ripples through the booth.

Kylo's hand tightens on his glass. I feel it more than see it. The slight shift in his posture.

But he doesn't speak.

Carter leans closer. His breath smells like whiskey. "Seriously though. What's your rate? I've got a friend who's curious."

More laughter. Louder now.

I keep my expression smooth. Empty. I've had years of practice.

"Come on." Carter's grin widens. "Don't be shy. We're all friends here."

He reaches out. Grabs my wrist. Pulls me toward him across the table.

"Carter—" someone starts.

The crystal tumbler explodes.

Kylo slams it against the table hard enough that shards spray across the leather. The sound cuts through the music, the laughter, everything.

Silence drops like a curtain.

Kylo stands. His hand closes around Carter's wrist—the one still holding mine. He twists. Carter yelps. Releases me.

"Touch her again," Kylo says quietly, "and I'll break every finger."

Carter stumbles back. His face goes red then white. "Jesus, man. I was just—"

"Get out."

"Kylo—"

"Now."

Carter grabs his jacket. Leaves.

The others stare. No one moves.

Kylo yanks me up by my elbow. Pulls me behind him. For one raw second I feel it—the wall of his body between me and the booth. Protection. Pure and absolute.

Then he turns.

His eyes are cold. Empty. "You're worthless," he says. Loud enough for everyone to hear. "Can't even sit at a table without embarrassing me."

I don't flinch.

"Lucky anyone looks at you at all." His voice cuts. Each word placed with precision. "You want to know why you're here? Because I allow it. That's the only reason."

I meet his gaze. Let the words wash over me.

He releases my elbow. Sits back down. Pours himself another drink.

I stand there for three seconds. Then I walk out.

Behind me, someone laughs nervously. The conversation restarts. Quieter now.

I take the stairs up. Step into the cold night air. Breathe once.

Pull out my phone.

I open my notes app. Type three names: Carter Bellamy. Marcus Voss. James Chen. Men from the booth. Potential witnesses. Leverage points.

I add a timestamp: 11:47 PM.

Then I write: *Kylo—shattered glass, grabbed Carter's wrist, positioned himself between. Then turned. Called me worthless, embarrassing, lucky. Exact words.*

I stare at the entry. Add one more line: *Performance or instinct?*

I underline it.

I don't answer the question.

Not yet.

---

I return to the estate at 2 AM. The house is dark. Silent.

I go to my room. Lock the door. Sit at the small desk by the window.

I open the leather-bound ledger. The one disguised as a diary. Inside, pages of dates, names, transactions. Years of careful documentation.

I add tonight's entry in neat handwriting.

*November 14. Meatpacking District. VIP lounge. Carter Bellamy—physical contact, witness to Kylo's intervention. Marcus Voss—present, corroborating witness. James Chen—same.*

I pause. Tap the pen against the page.

Then I write: *Kylo broke the glass before Carter touched skin. Reaction time: instantaneous. Threat assessment: accurate. Public humiliation: calculated.*

I close the ledger. Lean back.

The scar beneath my hair itches. I touch it without thinking. The raised line hidden under careful styling. The night Helena died. The night Kylo knocked me unconscious and told his father's men I was already dead.

I woke up alone.

Seven stitches. A headache that lasted three days.

I thought he tried to kill me.

Maybe he did.

I open my laptop. Pull up the encrypted file. Hundreds of documents now. Offshore accounts. Wire transfers. Bribery contracts. The construction foreman's payment for my father's staged accident.

Every crime. Every name.

I add tonight's photographs—shipping manifests I lifted from Darius's study before the nightclub. More evidence. More ammunition.

The file is almost complete.

Soon.

I close the laptop. Lie down in the dark.

Stare at the ceiling.

Outside, a car pulls into the driveway. I hear the engine cut. A door slam.

Footsteps in the hall. They stop outside my door.

Silence.

Then they move on.

I exhale slowly.

Touch the scar again.

*Performance or instinct?*

I still don't know.

But I will.
