Chapter 1 of When My Ex-Mate Saw the Lycan Prince Claim Me

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it the way you feel a tooth crack — sudden, internal, and wrong in a way that makes your whole body go still. Michael's mark on my neck, the one that had sat cold and dormant for eleven months, flared hot for exactly three seconds. Then it went numb.

I was standing in the Ironveil pack house kitchen when it happened. My hand was wrapped around a coffee mug. The ceramic was warm. The mark was not.

I set the mug down carefully and pressed two fingers to the spot just below my jaw. Nothing. No pulse of recognition, no faint tug of awareness that usually told me when Michael was nearby. Just smooth skin and the faint ridge of scar tissue that every mated wolf carried.

The bond hadn't snapped. It had simply... stopped.

I should have felt something. Panic, maybe. Grief. The stories always said a severed mate bond was agony, the kind that dropped wolves to their knees and left them gasping.

I felt nothing.

I finished my coffee, rinsed the mug, and went upstairs to change for the Pack Banquet.

---

The banquet hall was full by the time I arrived. Ironveil's annual gathering always drew visiting Alphas from neighboring packs — a chance to reinforce alliances, show off territory wealth, and pretend we were all one big happy supernatural family. The long tables were set with white linens and silver flatware. Candles flickered in iron holders. The air smelled like roasted meat and wolf musk layered thick enough to choke on.

I wore a simple black dress. No jewelry except the thin silver chain Michael had given me on our mating ceremony — the one I'd worn every day since because it was expected, not because I wanted to.

Michael stood at the head table, shaking hands with a visiting Alpha whose name I couldn't remember. He looked good. He always looked good. Dark hair, strong jaw, the kind of build that made other wolves step aside in hallways. His wolf was powerful. His presence commanded rooms.

He hadn't looked at me in three weeks.

I took my seat at the far end of the head table, the spot reserved for the Luna. It was technically a position of honor. In practice, it meant I sat far enough from the real conversation that no one had to pretend I was part of it.

The visiting Alpha raised his glass. "To Ironveil," he said, his voice carrying easily over the crowd. "A pack of strength, unity, and—"

"Strength is impressive," I said.

The room went quiet.

I smiled and set down my fork. "Especially for a pack whose Luna hasn't been invited to a strategy meeting in eleven months. Perhaps the guests should ask whether the pack runs itself."

The silence stretched. I could feel every eye in the hall turn toward me. The visiting Alpha's expression froze mid-toast. His delegation exchanged glances.

Michael's jaw tightened.

I picked up my water glass and took a sip. My hand was steady.

For a moment, no one moved. Then Michael's chair scraped back. He stood slowly, and I felt the shift in the room — the way wolves instinctively straightened, the way conversations died mid-word.

His wolf was rising.

I should have been afraid. I wasn't.

Michael walked around the table toward me, and I watched him come. His eyes were darker than they'd been a moment ago. Not quite shifted, but close. His hands curled into fists at his sides, and I saw the moment his claws extended — just the tips, black and sharp.

He stopped in front of me. Then he drove his hand down onto the table.

The wood splintered. Four deep gouges tore through the surface, parallel lines that went all the way to the grain. The sound echoed.

I didn't flinch.

Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it. Inside was a collar — delicate silver links set with moonstones that caught the candlelight and glowed faintly blue.

He lifted it from the box and stepped closer.

"To remind you," he said, his voice low and threaded with Alpha tone, "of your place as my Luna."

He fastened the collar around my neck. The metal was cold. The moonstones rested just above my mark.

The room was silent.

Michael's fingers lingered at the clasp for a moment. Then he stepped back, turned, and returned to his seat.

The visiting Alpha cleared his throat and finished his toast. Conversation resumed slowly, awkwardly, like a machine grinding back to life.

I sat very still and felt the weight of the collar against my throat.

He thought this was punishment. Dominance. A leash.

I knew what it really was.

His wolf had just told me something his human mind refused to see.

---

That night, I sat in my quarters with the door locked. The collar was still around my neck. I reached up and unclasped it carefully, setting it on the nightstand beside my worn notebook.

I opened the notebook to the contingency page. The outline I'd been building for months stared back at me — every clause of the Luna Accord I'd memorized, every step of the plan I'd been too careful to rush.

I picked up my pen and wrote a single word in the margin:

*Accelerant.*

Then I turned the page and began drafting the next move.

The collar sat on the nightstand, moonstones glowing faintly in the dark.

Michael thought he'd tightened the leash.

He'd just handed me the key.
