Chapter 1 of When His Returned Mate Poisoned My Daughter

The bond broke at 11:47 on a Thursday night, but I didn't know it yet.

I came downstairs for water. The mark on my neck had been cold for three weeks — not painful, just hollow, like pressing your palm against a window in winter. Roman's voice through the mind-link had felt muffled, wrapped in gauze. I told myself it was stress. Pack alliances. The usual.

I pushed open the kitchen door.

Roman had the Omega refugee pressed against the counter, his hand buried in her hair, his mouth on hers like he was trying to crawl inside her. The scent hit me before my brain could process the image: something floral and foreign, layered so thick on his skin it made my wolf recoil.

Then the bond spiked.

A jolt of arousal — raw, guilty, unmistakably his — slammed into my chest through the mate link. Not my feeling. His. He hadn't suppressed it fast enough.

I stood there. One second. Two.

Behind me, a small sound.

I turned. Brinley stood in the hallway, five years old, clutching her stuffed wolf to her chest. Her eyes were too wide. Inside her — I felt it through the faint nascent bond we shared — her wolf made a sound for the very first time. Not a howl. A whimper.

I didn't speak. I walked to her, scooped her up, and carried her back upstairs. Her body was rigid against mine, her breath coming in shallow little gasps.

"Mama," she whispered into my shoulder.

"I've got you," I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that.

I didn't look back at Roman. I didn't need to. The bond told me everything: the way his arousal cut off the instant he realized I was there, replaced by a cold wash of panic he tried to smother under false calm. The way he didn't follow me upstairs.

I put Brinley to bed. Stroked her hair until her breathing evened out. Her wolf was still whimpering inside her, a sound like wind through a cracked door. I pressed a kiss to her forehead and whispered, "You're safe. I promise."

Then I went to my study and locked the door.

I pulled out my leather journal — the one I'd kept since my first month as Luna. Supply inventories. Healer schedules. Alliance correspondence. I flipped to a blank page and wrote the date. The time. What I had seen. What I had felt through the bond.

Then I started thinking.

Roman had brought the Omega home three weeks ago. A refugee, he'd said. Displaced from a pack dispute up north. She had nowhere to go. It was the charitable thing to do.

I'd accepted it. I was Luna. Charity was part of the job.

But now I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck — the one that had gone cold the day she arrived — and I started pulling threads.

Over the next two days, I moved through the pack house like nothing had changed. I smiled at the Omegas in the kitchen. I reviewed the Harvest Banquet seating chart with Beta Garrett. I asked Roman how his day was and listened to his answers with the same pleasant attention I always had.

And I gathered evidence.

I found the scent first. Faint traces on Roman's shirts, his Alpha coat, the collar he wore to pack meetings. Floral. Persistent. Wrong. I cross-referenced the pack entry logs — no record of a displaced refugee arriving three weeks ago. No record of any refugee arriving in the last six months.

Then I found the den.

It was on the edge of Ironveil territory, tucked into a clearing I'd never been shown. The door was unlocked. Inside: a bed, still made. A box on the shelf.

I opened it.

Photographs. Old ones. Roman, younger, his arm around a woman with dark hair and a sharp smile. The same woman I'd seen in the kitchen. The same woman living in my pack house under a false name.

Samara.

I knew the name. Everyone in Ironveil knew the name. Roman's fated mate. The one who'd rejected him. The one who'd abandoned Brinley at birth and vanished five years ago.

She was back. And Roman had hidden her.

I sat on the edge of the bed in that den and felt something inside me go very, very still.

That night, I confronted him through the mind-link.

*Why is she here?*

His voice came back warm. Reasonable. *She had nowhere to go, Roselyn. I couldn't turn her away.*

*You didn't tell me who she was.*

*Because I knew you'd react like this.* A pause. Then, softer: *I feel nothing for her. You're imagining a threat that isn't there.*

The cold in my mark spread to my collarbone.

I didn't argue. I closed the link and went back to my journal.

I wrote everything. The suppressants he must have used to mask her scent. The den he'd kept. The photographs. The way he'd lied through the bond — not with words, but with the feelings he'd let me sense, calibrated to keep me calm.

I was done being calm.

The next morning, I walked into the kitchen and set the photographs on the table in front of him.

"Send her away," I said. "Or I take this to the pack elders by week's end."

Roman stared at the photos. His jaw tightened. "She's broken, Roselyn. She has nowhere else to go."

"That's not my problem."

"You're my chosen mate." His voice carried that subtle Alpha weight — not a command, but close. "You should be secure enough not to feel threatened by a destitute Omega."

I looked at him. Really looked. And I realized: he believed what he was saying.

"One week," I said.

He nodded. "I'll handle it."

He didn't.

Five days later, Samara was still there. I saw her in the common areas, moving through the pack house like she belonged. I saw the way Roman's gaze followed her when he thought I wasn't looking.

So I made a call.

The Lycan Council's administrative office answered on the second ring. I requested the forms for invoking the Luna Accord — the provision allowing a bond-broken Luna to petition for formal separation and guardianship.

The clerk's voice was neutral. "These cases require significant documentation, Luna Voss."

"I have documentation," I said.

I hung up. Locked my study door. And started writing a letter to Beta Garrett.

That night, Brinley woke screaming.

I ran to her room. She was sitting up in bed, her small body shaking, her wolf whimpering inside her in that new, frightened way.

I pulled her into my lap. "You're safe. I'm here."

She pressed her face into my shoulder. "Is the lady going to stay, Mama? She keeps looking at me like she wants something."

I stroked her hair. My voice came out steady. "You're safe. And I'm not going anywhere."

It was a promise I intended to keep.

No matter what it cost me.

I pressed two fingers to the cold scar on my neck and added a new entry to my journal: Brinley's sleep disruption. Dates. Duration. The healer's record of elevated stress markers.

Evidence was evidence.

And I was building a case.
