Chapter 1 of When His Mistress Scattered My Mother's Ashes at Our Gala

I carried the silver tray through the living room of my own home. The penthouse was full of voices. Men in suits. Women in dresses that cost more than my mother's weekly hospital bill. I moved between them like furniture.

The tray was heavy. Champagne flutes. Little plates with caviar on toast points. I'd arranged them myself this morning while Darren was in the shower. He'd walked past me in the kitchen without speaking. That was normal.

The party was for his executive team. A company retreat, he'd called it. Two days of meetings and dinners and networking. All of it happening in the home I cleaned, in the rooms I kept perfect, with people who looked through me like glass.

I refilled a glass for Victor Hale, Darren's VP of Finance. He didn't say thank you. He was laughing at something the woman next to him said. Her name was Melany Gomez. She was Darren's executive assistant. She wore a red dress that fit like a threat.

Melany's hand rested on Darren's arm. Her fingers were light. Casual. She laughed at something he said and leaned closer. I watched from across the room. I felt nothing. I'd stopped feeling things about Melany's touches a long time ago.

Darren stood at the center of the group. Tall. Confident. His suit was charcoal gray. I'd picked it up from the tailor last week. He looked like what he was—a man who owned things. Buildings. Companies. People.

I moved through the room. I collected empty glasses. I smiled when someone's eyes accidentally landed on me. I was good at being invisible. Five years of practice.

"Freyja."

Melany's voice cut through the conversation. I stopped. The tray wobbled slightly in my hands.

"Be a dear and fetch my coat from the bedroom, would you?" She smiled. Her teeth were very white. "Like a good girl."

The room didn't go quiet. Not exactly. But the conversations shifted. People were listening now.

I nodded. I set the tray down on the console table and walked toward the hallway. Behind me, Melany's voice floated after me, bright and loud.

"Some women are simply born to serve, don't you think?"

Laughter. Light. Polite. The kind that pretends to be a joke.

I found Melany's coat in the guest bedroom. Black cashmere. I carried it back and handed it to her. She took it without looking at me.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

I turned to go back to the kitchen. I had more trays to prepare. The caterers had left an hour ago. Everything else was on me.

"Darren."

Melany's voice again. I was halfway across the room. I kept walking.

"You never formally introduced us to the woman serving tonight."

I stopped. My hand was on the kitchen door.

"Who is she, exactly?"

The room was quiet now. Actually quiet. I turned around slowly.

Darren looked at me. His face was blank. No irritation. No affection. Nothing.

"She's my wife," he said. His voice was flat. "She handles the house."

He turned back to Victor. The conversation resumed. Melany smiled into her champagne glass.

I stood there. The kitchen door was cool under my palm. I could feel my heartbeat in my throat. In my wrists. In the space behind my eyes.

She's my wife. She handles the house.

Five years. Five years of waking up at dawn to make his coffee the way he liked it. Five years of managing his dry cleaning and his calendar and his dinner parties. Five years of smiling at his colleagues and smoothing over his irritations and making myself smaller and quieter and less.

All of it so my mother could keep breathing.

I thought of her. In her hospital bed. The machines beeping. The IV drip. The way she'd smiled at me last week and said, "You look tired, sweetheart."

I thought of the deal I'd made. My dignity for her life. My self for her survival.

I thought of Melany's hand on Darren's arm. The way he'd let her touch him. The way he'd looked at me just now. Like I was wallpaper.

Something inside me—something that had been bending for five years—snapped.

I walked back into the living room. I didn't pick up the tray. I walked straight to Darren.

He glanced up. Annoyed.

I looked at him. I looked at Melany. I looked at Victor and the rest of them. All of them watching now.

"I want a divorce."

My voice was quiet. Steady. It didn't shake.

The room went silent. Actual silence. The kind that rings in your ears.

Darren's expression changed. Not shock. Not hurt. Just cold, controlled fury.

"Everyone out," he said.

They left. Quickly. Melany lingered at the door, her eyes bright with something that looked like triumph. Then she was gone too.

Darren stood. He walked toward me. Slowly. He stopped two feet away.

"You will not divorce me," he said. His voice was ice. "You will not embarrass me again. And if you ever make a scene like that in front of my team, you will discover exactly how little leverage you hold."

He didn't say my mother's name. He didn't have to.

I understood.

The leash tightened.
