Chapter 1 of When His Mistress Framed Me for Bearing Another Man’s Child

The Plaza ballroom was all gold light and soft string music that night. Three hundred people in black tie, champagne flutes catching the chandeliers, the kind of room where everyone smiled at everyone and meant nothing by it. I wore a midnight-blue gown and the antique locket Conrad gave me on our wedding night — the one engraved on the back, Forever Yours, in letters so small you had to hold it up to the light to read them. I had worn it every single day for ten years.

Conrad was beside me at dinner, his hand warm on the small of my back, leaning in to say something that made the table laugh. He was good at that. He had always been good at that.

Twenty minutes in, I felt his hand leave.

"Back in a moment," he murmured near my ear. A kiss on my temple, light as a habit. Then he was gone.

I waited. I talked to the woman on my left about her foundation's new literacy initiative. I sipped my wine. I checked my watch once, then twice. Fifteen minutes. I excused myself.

I wasn't suspicious, exactly. I was just — looking for my husband.

The private corridor off the east wing of the ballroom was quieter, the music muffled behind heavy doors. I followed the sound of his laugh. I knew that laugh. I had loved that laugh for a decade. It was low and easy, the kind that meant he was completely relaxed, completely himself.

I stopped outside a suite door that sat open maybe four inches.

Through the gap, I saw them.

Conrad on the sofa, his jacket off, his tie loosened. And Violette — his adopted sister, back from London and her failed marriage, always so warmly concerned, always so perfectly present — curled against his side like she had been there a thousand times before. Because she had. I understood that in the same instant I saw it, a cold understanding that moved through me from my throat to my feet.

I pressed my back against the corridor wall. My heart was doing something loud and strange. But I didn't move.

"She actually thinks you proposed because you loved her," Violette said. Her voice was light, almost affectionate, the way you'd talk about a child who believed in something sweet and untrue.

Conrad laughed again. That same laugh. "Marrying Ariya was the most efficient transaction I ever made. The Simmons billions were the only thing she ever brought to the table."

Violette made a sound — amused, satisfied. "The most expensive puppet in Manhattan."

"The best part?" Conrad's voice dropped, warm with something that turned my stomach. "Watching you seethe with jealousy for ten years. Worth every dinner party."

Violette said something back but I didn't hear it. There was a sound in my ears, high and thin, like a frequency shifting. I stood very still against that wall and waited for it to pass.

Then my hand moved to my throat. My fingers found the locket's clasp. I unclasped it — carefully, quietly — and slid it into my evening bag.

I raised my phone. I pressed record.

I stood there for another four minutes. I got everything.

The ride down in the elevator was very quiet. The lobby was bright and full of people and I walked through it without seeing any of them. The valet brought my car. I sat in the driver's seat with the door closed and the engine off and I watched my hands shake against the steering wheel.

I reviewed the footage once. The audio was clean. Conrad's voice, Violette's voice, every word.

I opened the Simmons family's private encrypted group chat. It was a channel I hadn't used in months — birthdays, holidays, the kind of thread that accumulated voice notes and photos and the particular warmth of people who didn't need to perform for each other. I initiated a livestream. Then I held the phone up and spoke quietly, barely above a whisper.

"Mom. I need you to watch everything. Don't call me. Just watch."

I hit send. Then I sat back and stared through the windshield at the lit-up face of The Plaza and waited for my hands to stop shaking.

Across Manhattan, on the forty-third floor of the Simmons penthouse, my mother Adele was still awake. She picked up her phone, saw the notification, and went pale. I know this because she told me later. She said she felt the bottom drop out of something the moment she saw my face on the screen.

She did not call. She watched every second.

When the livestream ended, she set the phone down on the kitchen counter. She sat in silence for a long moment — my mother, who never sat still, who always had something to say. Then she picked the phone back up.

Three calls. Margaret Holloway, the Simmons family's head legal counsel. Stephen's chief of security. And Diane Tran, the forensic accountant who had been quietly, carefully flagging irregularities in Simmons-affiliated fund transfers for months, building a file she hadn't yet been authorized to use.

The machine began to move.

I didn't know any of that yet. I just sat in my car outside The Plaza with a dead locket in my evening bag, and I thought very clearly, for the first time in ten years, about what I was actually going to do next.
