When His Luna Became His Greatest Threat

The Silvercrest pack house smelled like pine boughs and mulled wine. They always went heavy on the decorations for the Winter Solstice Celebration. Garlands wrapped every column. Candles lined every windowsill. The ceremonial hall glowed with firelight and the kind of warmth that made everything look softer than it was.

I had not been back since the custody mediation three months ago.

I stood near the edge of the hall in a simple black dress. No jewelry. No Luna gown. I had learned my lesson about armor that looked like silk. Lochlan was upstairs in the nursery with two pack omegas I had vetted personally. The custody agreement required his presence at heritage events. It did not require mine. But I had come anyway, because absence would have been read as weakness, and I was done giving them anything to read.

Five allied Alphas filled the room. I recognized their scents from the Autumn Moon Banquet — the night Rhodes had rejected me in front of all of them. They were here again, with their Lunas, their Betas, their warriors in formal blacks. Watching. Always watching.

I caught Rhodes' scent before I saw him. Pine and iron and that faint wrong note underneath that only I could still read, even now, even with the bond severed. He was near the center of the hall, shaking hands with an Alpha whose name I did not care to remember.

Then I caught the jasmine.

Giuliana stepped into my line of sight like she had been waiting for the exact moment I would notice her. She wore gold. A dress cut low enough to make sure no one in the room could miss the mark on her throat.

Rhodes' mark. Fresh. Deliberate. Displayed.

She smiled at me. It was the smile of a woman who had won something and wanted to make sure the loser knew it.

I did not look away. I met her eyes and waited.

She walked toward me. Not quickly. She took her time, the way wolves do when they want an audience. By the time she stopped in front of me, half the she-wolves in the hall had turned to watch.

"Taylor." She said my name the way you say the name of someone you pity. "I didn't think you'd come. How brave."

I said nothing. I let her fill the silence.

"I know this must be hard for you." Her voice was soft. Gentle. Loud enough to carry. "Watching someone else stand where you used to stand. But you have to understand — Rhodes needed a real Luna. Someone strong enough to carry this pack's future."

She touched the mark on her throat. Her fingers lingered there.

"Don't worry," she continued. "When the time comes, I'll make sure Lochlan is raised properly. With the right values. The right... influences."

A she-wolf to my left made a small sound. Protest, maybe. Or disgust. Two others shifted, their scents spiking with discomfort.

Giuliana's smile widened. She was enjoying this.

Then Rhodes was there.

He did not walk. He appeared, the way Alphas do when they want to remind a room what they are. His hand went to Giuliana's waist. Possessive. Claiming.

He looked at the she-wolves who had made sounds. He looked at the two warriors who had stepped half a foot closer to me.

Then he spoke.

The Alpha tone came out like a physical blow. Not words. Pure command. Pure weight.

Three she-wolves dropped. Not to one knee. All the way down. Their wolves forced them to the floor before their conscious minds could resist. One of them made a choked sound. The other two just knelt, heads bowed, shaking.

The room went silent.

Rhodes did not say a word. He did not need to. The tone had said it all. *Be quiet. Stay down. Know your place.*

I stood exactly where I was.

My fingers did not go to my wrist. I did not press. I did not ground. I just stood there and watched my former mate silence an entire hall because his new chosen mate had humiliated me and he wanted to make sure no one interrupted her performance.

Giuliana leaned into him. She looked at me over his shoulder, and her eyes were bright with something that looked almost like joy.

"Enjoy the celebration, Taylor," she said sweetly.

Then they walked away together, and the hall slowly, carefully, began to breathe again.

The three she-wolves on the floor got up. They did not look at me. No one looked at me. They looked at their drinks, at the walls, at the candles. Anywhere but the woman who had just been reminded, in front of five allied packs, that she had no power here anymore.

I stayed for another hour. I smiled when required. I spoke when spoken to. I did not leave early, because leaving early would have been exactly what they expected.

When I finally went upstairs to collect Lochlan, my hands were steady.

That night I sat at the window of the temporary quarters I had rented on Silvercrest's border. Lochlan was asleep in the bed behind me, one small hand curled under his chin. The window was cracked. Cold air slipped through and touched my face.

I had slept in this room for three months. I would not sleep in it again after tonight. Tomorrow I would take my son and leave Silvercrest's territory permanently. The custody agreement required heritage visits twice a year. No more.

I pressed my palm flat against the cold glass.

I thought about Giuliana's smile. I thought about Rhodes' hand on her waist. I thought about the mark on her throat and the three she-wolves forced to their knees and the way the entire hall had looked anywhere but at me.

I thought about the folder still sitting in my locked office at the Lycan Healer's Institute. The one with Rhodes' name on it. The one with the diagnosis inside.

I had carried his secret for three years. I had bled myself to keep his wolf standing. I had done it out of love, out of devotion, out of the desperate, silent hope that my sacrifice would mean something to him.

It had meant nothing.

So I would make it mean something else.

I looked out at the dark outline of the Silvercrest pack house. The lights still burned in the ceremonial hall. The celebration would go until dawn.

I made a decision. Not born of rage. Not born of grief. Born of absolute clarity.

I would never enter that house again as anything less than the person who decided its future.

Behind me, Lochlan stirred. I turned and watched his small chest rise and fall.

Then I looked back out the window and did not sleep.
