I found the restaurant six weeks ago.

It was tucked between a laundromat and a Vietnamese grocery on a side street in Carroll Gardens — the kind of place with mismatched chairs and a chalkboard menu and candles stuck into old wine bottles. No valet. No dress code. No one from Hector's world would ever walk through that door, which was exactly the point. I made the reservation under my own name. Emryn Sanders, party of two, seven o'clock.

I wore the green dress. Not the one he bought me — the one I picked out myself from a rack at a boutique in Cobble Hill, the one that cost me two hours of deliberation and a hundred and forty dollars I didn't need to justify to anyone. I did my own hair. I took the subway.

I got there at six fifty.

The hostess seated me at a corner table near the window. The candle was already lit. I ordered sparkling water and looked at the menu I had already memorized and told myself he was just running late. Hector was never late. That was one of the things I had always loved about him — the way he treated time like a form of respect.

Seven fifteen. I rearranged my silverware.

Seven twenty. I read the chalkboard specials for the fourth time.

When my phone buzzed, I already knew. I don't know how I knew, but I did — the way you know a storm is coming before the sky changes color. Some part of me had been waiting for this specific moment for three years.

His voice was warm. It was always warm. That was the thing about Hector Kennedy — he never sounded like he was doing something wrong.

"Em." Just my name, the way he said it when he wanted me to understand something without him having to explain it. "It's Dior. She collapsed at the Whitfield gala — panic attack, they're saying, hyperventilating in front of everyone. I can't leave her like this."

I watched the candle flame bend sideways in a draft from the door.

"I know," he said. "I know. I'm so sorry. I'll make it up to you, I promise. Next week — anywhere you want, I'll clear the whole evening."

Next week. Anywhere I want.

I had heard some version of this sentence so many times that I could have written it for him.

"Okay," I said.

I don't know why I said okay. Maybe because it was easier than the alternative. Maybe because I was sitting in a restaurant I had chosen specifically so no one would see us together, and the irony of that was suddenly too heavy to carry.

"You're the best," he said. "I'll call you later."

He didn't call later.

I sat at that table for another hour. I ordered the pasta because the waiter had come by twice with a look of careful sympathy, and I didn't want his pity to go to waste. I ate most of it. I paid the bill — sixty-three dollars, including the sparkling water I'd been nursing since six fifty — and I left a twenty percent tip because none of this was the waiter's fault.

The cab back to Tribeca smelled like pine air freshener and old leather. I sat with my hands in my lap and watched Brooklyn slide past the window and thought about nothing in particular. That was the strange part. I had expected to feel something enormous — rage, or grief, or the specific humiliation of being stood up on your anniversary by a man who had never once introduced you as his girlfriend in public. Instead I felt very calm. Very clear.

The Tribeca apartment was exactly as I had left it that morning. Hector's apartment, technically — his name on the lease, his furniture, his art on the walls. I had lived there for fourteen months and the only evidence of me was a framed photograph in the nightstand drawer, hidden there because we had agreed, early on, that it was better to be careful.

I got the suitcase from the closet.

I packed methodically. Clothes first, then the toiletries I had bought myself, then the books stacked on the floor beside the bed because there was no bookshelf with space for them. I took the photograph from the nightstand drawer and wrapped it in a sweater. I took the candle from the shelf in the bathroom — a specific cedar and amber scent I had found at a market in the West Village and replaced three times. I left everything else exactly where it was.

I set my key on the kitchen counter.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at my phone for a long moment. Then I typed: *We're done.* Three words. I read them twice, then sent them before I could find a reason not to.

The subway back to Queens was mostly empty at that hour. I found a seat near the window and held my suitcase between my knees and looked at my own reflection in the dark glass. Somewhere around the bridge, my eyes filled. I didn't make a sound. I just let it happen, quietly, the way I had learned to do most things in the last three years — privately, without taking up too much space.

By the time I reached Queens, I was done.

I called Braylon from the sidewalk outside my old studio building, the one I had sublet to a grad student and reclaimed two months ago when the lease came up, as if some part of me had already been preparing for this. He picked up on the second ring.

"It's over," I said.

A pause. Not the kind that means he didn't know what to say — Braylon Coleman always knew what to say. The kind that means he was choosing carefully.

"Are you okay?"

"I will be."

He didn't push. He never pushed. That was the thing about Braylon — he had known me since we were thirteen years old, two kids from the same block in Queens, and in all that time he had never once asked me for more than I was ready to give.

"I'll be there in forty minutes," he said.

He showed up in forty-two, with takeout from the Thai place on Parsons Boulevard that I had been ordering from since high school. We sat on my floor — no furniture yet, just boxes and the suitcase I hadn't unpacked — and ate pad see ew out of the containers and didn't talk about Hector at all. Braylon told me about a deposition that had gone sideways that week. I told him about a campaign pitch I was working on. The radiator knocked. Outside, someone was playing music two floors up.

It was the most normal I had felt in three years.

Three days later, Hector showed up at my door.

I heard the knock and knew it was him before I opened it — the same way I had known, sitting in that restaurant with the candle burning down, that the phone call was coming. He was standing in the hallway of my building in a coat that cost more than my monthly rent, looking slightly undone in a way I had never seen on him before. Hector Kennedy did not do undone. He did controlled. He did composed. He did the quiet authority of a man who had never had to raise his voice to get what he wanted.

He looked, for the first time, like he wasn't sure he was going to get what he wanted.

"Come back," he said. No preamble. Just that.

I leaned against the doorframe and looked at him. He was still the most compelling person I had ever been in a room with. That hadn't changed. I didn't think it ever would, entirely, and I had made my peace with that on the subway three nights ago.

"The panic attack was real," he said. "I had no choice. You know how my family's obligations work — you've always known."

"I have," I said.

My voice came out quieter than I intended. Not soft — quiet. There's a difference. Soft means uncertain. Quiet means you have already decided.

"I've always known exactly how your obligations work, Hector." I held his gaze. "And I'm done being the one they cost."

He opened his mouth. Closed it. Something moved across his face — not anger, not quite. Something more like the specific vertigo of a man who has just realized that the ground he was standing on was never as solid as he thought.

I stepped back from the doorframe.

"Take care of yourself," I said.

And I closed the door.
