Vows Under Fire

"Cassandra, attend the meeting in my office. Now."

His voice was ice-cold, cutting through the hollow grandeur of the house like a blade. I flinched but didn’t let it show. Instead, I placed the porcelain teacup down on the gilded tray, its delicate clink barely audible in the cavernous silence.

The Logan estate was breathtaking—polished marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and an endless parade of rooms too perfect to touch. Yet, it smothered me. A cage of glass and gold.

Logan’s words weren’t requests. They were commands. And defiance wasn’t an option—not when his calculating eyes lingered, dissecting me with the precision of a surgeon.

"Of course, Mr. Logan."

The title tasted bitter on my tongue, but it was what he demanded. Not Logan, not my husband—just Mr. Logan.

I followed his silhouette into the study, each step heavier than the last.

He didn’t sit. Instead, he stood behind the desk, his fingers drumming on the smooth mahogany. The silence between us was a living thing, stretching, suffocating.

"You’re late."

The accusation stung. I glanced at the grandfather clock behind him. Three minutes past eleven.

"I wasn’t aware you preferred military precision in domestic affairs," I said, daring a hint of sarcasm.

His lips twitched—was it amusement or irritation? I couldn’t tell. Logan was a master at concealing emotions.

"This isn’t domestic, Cassandra. This is business."

Business. That word had become my new reality. While other newlyweds might spend their first months wrapped in tender intimacy, Logan had plunged me into the cold, ruthless world of corporate warfare.

Meetings. Deals. Strategies. All while maintaining the façade of a perfect marriage.

"You’ll attend the shareholder gala this weekend."

"As your accessory?"

The words slipped before I could stop them. His eyes narrowed, dark and unyielding.

"As my wife." His tone was final.

Wife. The word echoed, hollow and ironic. What kind of wife was ignored, controlled, and relegated to a pawn in her husband’s game?

I swallowed my retort, instead offering a curt nod. Pushing him too far never ended well.

I left the study, my pulse still thrumming with unspoken defiance, a flicker of something caught my eye—a stack of papers on the corner of his desk. Unusual for Logan to leave anything unattended.

Curiosity and desperation waged war within me. Logan’s world was a labyrinth of secrets, and I had no map. If I could find something—anything—that explained his coldness, his calculated cruelty…

I hesitated, glancing at the doorway. No sound of footsteps. My heart pounded as I reached for the stack, fingers trembling slightly.

The top document was benign—financial summaries, spreadsheets. But as I flipped the pages, my breath hitched.

A photo of my father. His name. His signature on a contract I didn’t recognize. Beneath it, a scrawled note in Logan’s handwriting: Debt paid. Retribution pending.

The room spun. Retribution? What retribution?

"I hope you found what you were looking for."

Logan’s voice was a dagger in the quiet. I froze, clutching the paper like it might shield me from his fury.

"This…this isn’t what it looks like." My voice cracked, betraying me.

He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, his expression unreadable.

"Oh, Cassandra," he murmured, almost pitying. "You’ve barely scratched the surface."

My knees felt weak, but I forced myself to stand tall. "What is this about?"

"It’s about justice," he said, each word sharp and precise. "Your family took something from mine. Now, I’m merely returning the favor."

Justice? Revenge? The words crashed over me, shattering what little stability I had left. My marriage wasn’t a partnership—it was a battlefield.

He leaned in, his breath warm against my ear despite the chill of his words.

"Welcome to my world, Mrs. Logan. Try not to drown."

And just like that, he was gone, leaving me clutching the damning papers and a thousand questions.

I sank into the nearest chair, my mind racing. This wasn’t just about business or a cold, distant marriage. This was personal.

Logan had married me not out of love or even convenience—but vengeance.

I had to uncover the truth. Not just to protect my family, but to survive in this twisted game he’d trapped me in.

My hand tightened around the papers, a new resolve hardening in my chest.

If Logan thought he could break me, he was wrong.

This ice throne he’d placed me on wouldn’t shatter beneath me—it would become my fortress.

I’d find his weaknesses, his secrets, and when the time came, I’d be the one to make him drown.

"Game on, Mr. Logan," I whispered.

And for the first time, the cold didn’t feel so unbearable.
