Chapter 1 of He Planned to Divorce Me After I Gave Birth, So I Took His Twin Heirs and Disappeared

I was nine months pregnant, due to deliver within the week, when the receipt from the Cielo Grande arrived at the estate, slid in among the tribute envelopes and the courier deliveries as though it belonged there. It was the most exclusive hotel the Family owned a stake in, marble and gold and discretion priced by the hour, the place where Miles had taken me on our wedding night. Tucked inside the envelope was a handwritten note on cream-colored card stock, the kind the concierge left on a turned-down bed.

Hope you and your husband had an amazing night.

My husband of seven years. Miles Vale, Don of the Vale Family, the man whose ring I had kissed before God and the assembled Families. He had been taking his mistress to the same suite where he first undressed me, where the city lights had pressed gold against the windows and I had believed, foolishly, that I belonged to someone. He had been doing it for two years.

The first time was the day I miscarried.

My phone buzzed against the polished surface of the vanity. An anonymous message, sent from a number I didn't recognize, routed through whatever back channels people in this world used when they wanted to deliver a wound without leaving fingerprints. In the Family, even cruelty observed its own kind of omertà.

"His one true love who can produce an heir for the Family unlike an infertile Don's wife. Last night we had sex in your honeymoon suite."

Multiple photos were attached. Two videos.

I was numb, tears streaming down my face as I pressed my thumb to one of them.

"You are the only one I love. I will leave Rowan and marry you." I closed my eyes against the recorded confession of my husband, against the low, certain voice I had once mistaken for safety.

………………………………………………

One message after another flooded the screen, each arriving with a soft chime that the silence of the room made obscene.

"I hope you know the truth now."

"I'm Miles's woman."

"Every night he claimed he was out handling Family business, he was actually in my bed."

"He told me he's only staying with you because he needs an heir."

"Here's my Instagram. It's full of our photos together. Even on your wedding anniversary, your husband was with me."

My fingers trembled as I opened the link.

The page loaded instantly, as if it had been waiting for me all along.

Photo after photo filled the screen, each one documenting an intimacy that should never have existed, each one a small blade laid out in a neat row.

The most recent image showed Elias seated comfortably on a man's lap, her mouth pressed to his, her hand splayed across his chest like a soldier claiming taken ground.

The caption beneath it read:

January 23rd. The day he first saw me two years ago. Love at first sight.

January 23rd.

My birthday.

A hollow laugh escaped my lips as the tears blurred everything into smeared gold.

I kept scrolling.

Miles's face never appeared clearly in any of the photographs. He was careful that way. A Don learns to keep his face out of frame.

But I recognized him immediately.

How could I not?

I was the one who had spent years choosing those watches for him, holding them up in the dim light of jewelers who shuttered their doors when a Vale came to call.

I knew every piece in his collection.

The weight of each watch in the hand.

The tiny scratch on his Patek Philippe from the night he slammed his fist onto the table during a sit-down with the Winslows, when the air in the room had gone so still that even the enforcers along the wall had stopped breathing.

I knew his hands.

His cuffs.

The signet ring engraved with the Vale crest, the same ring he had touched to my mouth on the altar.

I didn't need to see his face.

I knew exactly who he was.

Then my scrolling stopped.

A single photograph froze me in place.

In the picture, Elias was wound around a man's waist while she displayed a diamond ring to the camera, fingers fanned wide so nothing would be missed.

Flowers filled the background.

Fireworks burned across the sky behind them.

The caption beneath it made the blood run cold and slow in my veins.

March 19th. He asked me to be his girlfriend today. Guess what? I said yes.

The day I lost my baby.

The memory struck me so hard I could barely pull air into my lungs.

I remembered calling Miles again and again, the phone trembling at my ear, the line ringing into nothing.

He never answered.

When I finally managed to send word that I was in the clinic, that I was bleeding, he called back only to accuse me of staging it, of clawing for his attention like some desperate thing.

Then he hung up.

I had been lying in a private clinic ringed by Family soldiers, the kind of place where the doctors took their orders from the same hand that signed their protection. Bleeding. Terrified. Surrounded by men who answered to him.

And he hung up.

I remembered staring, numb, as my child's tiny body was carried away from me, the soldiers at the door turning their faces to the wall.

The shock shattered something inside me that never fully set again.

For more than two months afterward, I could barely leave my bed.

The estate had grown strangely quiet around me, the way a house goes quiet when everyone in it knows a thing they will not say. The soldiers posted along the grounds stopped meeting my eyes. Even Arthur, who always had an opinion lodged behind her teeth, suddenly had nothing to offer me but silence. Omertà has a hundred faces. I had learned, in that bed, to recognize the one that pities you.

Then another message appeared.

My heart dropped through the floor of me.

Elias had sent an ultrasound image, the gray static of it impossible to misread.

Attached beneath it was a doctor's prescription.

And one simple sentence.

I'm pregnant with Miles's child.

The world tilted on its axis.

My chest tightened so violently I struggled to draw breath, one hand pressed to the swell of my own belly, the child I carried turning slowly inside me as if it too had felt the ground shift.

The room had grown too small. Too close. The scent of the lilies on the dresser, cut fresh that morning by some soldier's wife, turned suddenly funereal.

Downstairs, a door closed with a heavy, expensive sound.

A soldier's radio crackled once in the hall below, then went still.

The ordinary sounds of the Vale household carrying on as it always did felt crueler than any blade laid out across that screen.

As if nothing had happened at all.
