Chapter 1 of Too Late To Love Her

Elenora’s Point of View.

“Trust me, Elenora will be as good as dead once she drinks this wine tonight. Don’t worry, the room and the man are ready. Once she’s unconscious, we’ll carry her to the room, record her, and upload the video to the internet. Just like that, your brother’s divorce is guaranteed."

“Are you sure this will work, Melissa? This is a rare opportunity. We can’t let it slide,” Britney said.

“You’ve known me long enough. I don’t joke around.”

My eyes widened in shock as I listened to Britney’s conversation with Melissa—my sister-in-law—outside my husband’s home office. Did Melissa hate me that much—to the extent of ruining my reputation?.

Curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to see what was going on inside the office. I pushed the door slightly open, only to see Zane, my beloved husband, standing between them with a dark expression.

Oh no! Zane can’t be involved in this—I tried to deny the obvious truth.

“Hey, what’s your take on our plan?” Melissa asked Zane. “You haven’t said anything. Don’t tell me you actually care for her and want to spend the rest of your life with her. Sasha is coming back. What about her? Don’t you love her anymore?."

I was hopeful, eager to hear his response—but the moment he opened his mouth, I was heartbroken.

“Nobody cares for a pawn! I don’t care how you girls do it. I only care about the shares!” His eyes were void of emotion and his tone cold. “Whatever you do, just make sure it won’t be traced back to us.”

No… This isn’t true. Zane can’t betray me like this. Tears flowed down my face as I ran toward the nearest restroom.

>>>>>>>>>>>

My three years of marriage were a lie. Zane never loved me. He has always loved Sasha, his college sweetheart.

He was only with me because of my family’s influence.

“Well, since he doesn’t love me, we should go our separate ways!” I declared to myself.

I reached for my phone, dialed my lawyer’s number, and thankfully, he picked up on the first ring.

“Hey, Elenora…”

“Leon, help me draft a divorce agreement.”

“Okay… You’re making an impromptu decision. Don’t you think you should calm down and rethink?."

I shook my head even though he couldn’t see me.

“I’m sure about this,” I said firmly, then hung up without waiting for his reply.

Checking my makeup in the mirror, I realized it was a bit messed up from crying earlier. I quickly did a retouch, then exited the restroom as if I hadn’t just been crying my eyes out.

Zane was greeting a guest when I returned to the grand hall. He had closed a multi-billion-dollar deal last week, and he was throwing a celebration party today.

“Hey, babe,” he called out immediately when he saw me. He excused himself from the guest and approached me. “Where did you go? I’ve been searching for you.”

He reached for my hand and raised it to his lips, placing a kiss on my knuckles.

“I’m fine. Just went to the restroom,” I replied flatly, pulling my hand away from his.

He looked down at his empty hand as a surprised frown formed on his face. “Are you sure? You don’t look fine to me.”

“I’m fine,” I replied firmly, then walked away from him into the crowd.

I could feel his gaze on me, but I ignored him and continued doing my own thing.

Out of nowhere, Melissa approached me with two glasses of champagne.

“Hey, Elenora,” she said, forcing one of the champagnes into my hand. “Cheers to my brother’s win!” She clicked her glass against mine.

How shameless can she be? She doesn’t even try to hide the evil glint in her eyes.

My brows raised as I stared at the champagne. After a brief moment of observation, I turned and approached Zane.

“Cheers?” I raised my glass, hoping he’d feel guilty and stop me from drinking it.

He simply smiled and raised his own glass of champagne. “Cheers. More wins to me,” he said.

I watched as he finished his drink in one gulp. My chest tightened. It hurt to see the person I love betray me to my face.

I pretended to bring the glass to my lips, then let it slip from my hand and crash to the floor.

“Fuck, Elenora! You’re so clumsy!” Melissa exclaimed.

The crashing glass didn’t draw anyone’s attention, but her voice did.

Zane rushed forward to examine my hand for any cuts. He looked so worried, and anyone who saw him would think he was a loving and caring husband—what a snake!.

I didn’t try to stop him. I allowed him to carry on with his act. After he was done making sure I wasn’t hurt, he ordered some of his men to clean the place up, and the party continued.

“Go on. Your guests are waiting,” I urged him to go entertain them.

“You’re so understanding.” He kissed my cheek and left.

Immediately after Zane left, Melissa, who wasn’t satisfied with his reaction, pushed me. Since I wasn’t expecting it, I lost my balance. Unfortunately, I was standing near the balcony. The glass panel of the balcony broke as I fell through.

“Elenora!!” I heard her shout.

Thankfully, there was a flower bed underneath the balcony. It partially protected me as I landed. I twisted my ankle and had a few cuts, though.

Everyone rushed down to check on me. Zane was the first to reach me. For a split second, he looked genuinely worried.

But just when he was about to scoop me into his arms, Melissa shouted:

“Zane! Something’s wrong… Sasha was involved in an accident!."

“What?!” he roared.

He let go of me, and without much thought, he pushed through the crowd and ran out.
