Too Late for My Husband’s Regret

Third Person's POV

The invitation arrived before breakfast, slipped beneath Isabella’s door by someone who did not knock and did not wait for permission.

She found it when she stepped out of the bathroom, still tying the sash of her robe, her hair damp and heavy against her shoulders. The envelope was thick cream stock, the Grantstone emblem embossed in restrained gold, her name written in Clara Grant’s precise hand.

Isabella Blackridge

Private Luncheon — Board of Directors

Attendance Is Expected

Three words sat at the bottom like a commandment rather than a courtesy.

She turned the envelope over, half-expecting a personal note, some acknowledgment that this was no longer merely corporate theater but the reshaping of her life. There was nothing else.

Ethan was waiting in the sitting room when she emerged dressed in a slate-grey suit. He stood by the window as though guarding it from the city beyond rather than her.

“This is public,” she said, holding up the envelope.

“Yes,” he replied.

“And Lydia will be there.”

“Yes.”

A pause followed. Then she asked the question she already knew the answer to.

“Are you accompanying me?”

“I will be present,” he said.

Not with you.

Just present.

The dining hall reserved for board functions occupied the highest floor of the Grantstone tower. Light flooded the room through wall-to-wall windows, the skyline reflected in the polished marble like a second city suspended beneath their feet. The directors were already gathered when Isabella entered, their conversations soft and measured, their smiles rehearsed.

What unsettled her was not that they turned to look.

It was that they did not look at her.

Their gazes slid past her shoulder, toward the door behind her.

Ethan entered a step later.

He did not walk to her side.

He crossed the room and stopped behind Lydia Grant’s chair, adjusting the placement of her seat with the ease of a man who had performed that gesture countless times before. She did not look up at him, but the corner of her mouth curved, just slightly, in acknowledgment.

Isabella stood still for a heartbeat too long before moving toward the only empty chair at the far end of the table.

Lunch unfolded like a ceremony everyone else had rehearsed.

Wine was poured. Dishes were served. Updates were exchanged about hospital projections, investor confidence, and the reassuring language that could be used to mask paralysis as patience.

No one asked Isabella anything.

No one needed to.

“You have been indispensable,” one of the directors said to Lydia, lifting his glass. “Your composure has steadied the board during a difficult transition.”

“I am only doing what Julian would expect,” Lydia replied. “Stability is everything.”

Ethan remained behind her, his posture impeccable, his gaze never drifting far from her line of sight.

When Clara stood, the room fell silent at once.

“There is a small matter of internal alignment that must be addressed,” she said. “In order to minimize operational confusion, certain responsibilities will be refined.”

Her eyes moved slowly across the table and came to rest, not on Isabella, but on Ethan.

“Effective immediately, Ethan Cole will serve as Lydia Grant’s exclusive security liaison.”

Exclusive.

The word slid through Isabella’s chest like cold water.

Several directors nodded, murmuring approval. Someone glanced toward Isabella as though remembering she was present.

“You will, of course, be assigned additional personnel,” Clara added, her tone gracious. “Your safety remains a priority.”

Isabella rose.

The scrape of her chair against the marble floor was not loud, but it was enough.

Ethan finally looked at her.

For a fraction of a second, the distance he had cultivated collapsed.

She held his gaze.

She waited.

She did not plead.

She did not blink.

If he were going to choose her, this was the moment.

“Is there a problem?” Clara asked.

Isabella broke eye contact with Ethan and turned to her. “No,” she said evenly. “I simply wanted to congratulate you on your clarity.”

Clara smiled faintly. “Ethan?”

“Yes,” he replied.

The word was firm. Certain.

“I understand. I will adjust my responsibilities accordingly.”

The room relaxed.

Lydia reached back without looking and brushed her fingers lightly against Ethan’s sleeve, a quiet signal of gratitude.

Isabella nodded once.

“Then please excuse me,” she said.

No one stopped her.

The doors closed softly behind her, sealing the applause back inside where it belonged.

The hallway outside the dining hall was flooded with light—too bright, too clean, as though nothing irreversible had just happened. Isabella didn’t realize she was shaking until she reached the stairwell and had to clutch the railing, her breath breaking as she forced herself to stay upright.

Her phone vibrated.

I didn’t want you to hear it like that.

Please call me.

She turned the screen face down and walked away.

That night, in the east wing bedroom that still didn’t feel like hers, Isabella removed her jewelry one piece at a time. Necklace. Bracelet. Earrings. Each placed with careful precision on the vanity. Last came the ring prototype—the symbol of a future that had just been rewritten without her consent.

She studied her reflection. Perfect. Untouched. A woman no one would suspect had just lost her place.

She was marrying a man who had already chosen someone else.

Bound to a family that had already decided she would endure it.

Protected by a silence that was never meant to protect her at all.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, she picked it up.

Not to answer.

To delete the message.

Then she opened her contacts and scrolled—past his name, past his family’s—until she stopped.

Her thumb hovered only a second before pressing call.

Across the room, the ring lay abandoned.

And on the other end of the line, someone answered who was never supposed to be involved.
