They Toasted His Mistress While I Owned Their Club

"Read the numbers, Daniel," I said.

He stared at the silver casing resting an inch from his fingers. The dining room chandelier cast a harsh glare over the etched Roman numerals.

"I... I don't..." Daniel stammered. He pulled his hand back as if the metal burned.

"You spent six months memorizing the Whitmore registry," I reminded him. I tapped the mahogany table right beside the watch. "You bought three horses. You paid for a private investigator. You learned the names of third cousins. Now, look at the first page of your memory."

Daniel swallowed. His Adam's apple bobbed violently against his tight collar.

"Line one," I prompted. "Under the founding family."

"E.W.," Daniel whispered.

"And the governance code?"

He squinted at the watch, his lips moving silently. Then the remaining color drained from his face entirely. "M-C-M... it's the exact same string."

"The exact same string," I repeated.

I dragged the watch back across the polished wood. The silver scraped softly against the table. I folded it into my palm and let the cool metal ground me.

"Three years into our marriage, your startup was drowning," I said, keeping my eyes locked on his. "You owed 1.2 million. The bank threatened to foreclose on this house. Do you remember?"

Daniel gripped the arms of his chair. He nodded once, a jerky, mechanical motion.

"I mortgaged my private property," I said. "I handed you a check to clear the debt. You told everyone an anonymous angel investor saved you."

"I didn't know," Daniel pleaded. His voice cracked. "Eleanor, I swear. I thought you sold a rundown cabin."

"I could have called Alaric that very afternoon," I said. "One phone call, and the Whitmore trust would have erased your debt in sixty seconds. I held the seal. I had the power to fix your entire life without lifting a finger."

Tom, the venture capitalist, leaned forward. "Why didn't you?"

I didn't look at Tom. I kept my focus solely on my husband. "Because I wanted to give this marriage a chance. I wanted to build a life with a man who loved me, not a man who worshipped a trust fund."

Daniel slumped backward. His spine hit the chair with a heavy thud. He dragged both hands over his face, smearing the sweat across his forehead.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Daniel groaned through his fingers. "If you had just told me who you were, none of this would have happened."

I tightened my grip on the pocket watch. The engraved letters dug into my skin.

"I was waiting for you to recognize your wife," I said. "Instead, you spent three years searching for my surname."

"That isn't fair!" Chanel shouted.

She stepped out from behind Daniel's chair, her acrylic nails digging into her designer handbag. Her face flushed a violent, blotchy pink.

"You set him up!" Chanel accused, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You hid your money, you dressed like a peasant, and you watched him struggle! You wanted him to fail so you could play the hero!"

Alaric stepped smoothly between Chanel and the table.

The old butler did not raise his voice. He did not even look directly at her. He simply adjusted the cuff of his immaculate tailcoat.

"Madam has not permitted outsiders to speak," Alaric said.

Chanel froze. Her mouth hung open. She looked around the room, searching for someone, anyone, to defend her.

The wealthy investors stared back with absolute indifference. The socialites averted their eyes. Even Daniel kept his hands over his face, refusing to look at her.

"Outsider?" Chanel hissed, her voice trembling. "I am his partner. I belong here."

"You belong wherever my husband's dwindling bank account can afford to put you," I said.

I stood up. I smoothed the wrinkles from my skirt and adjusted the damp gray wool scarf around my neck.

"Tom," I said, turning to the venture capitalist.

He straightened up immediately. "Yes, Eleanor?"

"Thank you for coming tonight," I said. "I apologize for the disruption to your holiday. I will have Alaric arrange a car to take you and your wife home."

Tom offered a stiff, respectful nod. "We appreciate it. And... about the tech expansion pitch?"

"The application is void," I stated.

Daniel dropped his hands. He shot up from his chair, his eyes wide with raw panic. "Eleanor, no! You can't do that! The board already sent the proxy approval!"

"I am the board, Daniel," I said.

I walked around the table, my shoes silent against the hardwood floor. I passed Chanel without a single glance. I passed the ruined turkey and the spilled wine.

"Alaric," I called out.

"Yes, Miss?" the butler replied, falling into step right behind me.

"Cancel the proxy email," I instructed. "Flag Daniel's holding company in the system. The Whitmore Club will not entertain any future proposals from him."

"Understood, Miss," Alaric said.

"Eleanor, wait!" Daniel scrambled around the table. He knocked over a crystal water glass. It shattered against the floor, sending shards of glass sliding across the wood.

He ignored the mess, rushing toward the hallway. "You can't leave me with nothing! I built that company! You own half of it!"

I stopped right at the edge of the arched doorway. The cool draft from the foyer brushed against my face.

I turned around.

Daniel stood a few feet away, panting heavily. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his tie askew, and his cuffs stained with red wine. He looked nothing like the arrogant man who had demanded I stay in the kitchen two hours ago.

Theo sat quietly at the table, his arms wrapped tightly around the orange Hermès box. He watched the exchange with wide, fearful eyes.

"I don't want your company, Daniel," I said.

His shoulders dropped in a massive sigh of relief. "Thank God. Okay. We can work this out. We can separate amicably."

"But we do need to settle our accounts," I added.

Daniel blinked. "Accounts? What accounts? The mortgage is paid off."

I tilted my head, studying the terrified man I had spent the last decade supporting.

"Over the last three years, you drained our household emergency fund," I said.

Chanel stiffened near the dining table. She clutched her designer handbag tighter against her chest.

"You bought her a five-thousand-dollar backpack for my son," I continued, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room. "You bought her diamond bracelets. You paid for her lease on the luxury apartment downtown."

"That was my money!" Daniel shouted, his voice cracking. "I earned it from my startup!"

"You earned it after I injected 1.2 million of my personal assets to save you from bankruptcy," I corrected.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a thick, folded stack of paper. I tossed it onto the nearest side table. The papers fanned out, revealing rows of highlighted bank transfers, credit card statements, and jewelry store receipts.

"By the way," I said, staring directly into Daniel's panicked eyes. "Every single dollar you embezzled from our joint accounts to buy gifts for Chanel—I kept the receipts."
