Chapter 1 of The Wife They Left in a Wheelchair

1: 1

My sister ran me over with her car, and after I lost the baby, my parents sent her to prison with their own hands.

Sawyer Whitman held me and swore, "The person who killed our child—I will never forgive her."

I believed him. I thought their hearts truly broke for me.

Then Matilda Cooley finished her sentence, and my mother begged me to come to the welcome-home dinner.

When I refused, she lost her temper with me for the first time.

"You only lost a baby that was never born, and you're left with a bad leg. Mattie sat in prison for five years."

"She's gone five years without a single ounce of care from her family. Can't you stop being so petty!"

Sawyer talked me around too. "What's in the past should stay in the past. It's time to let it go."

I thought about it all night, and finally decided to forgive Matilda.

The next day, I picked up a gift and hurried to the restaurant.

But when I pushed open the door of the private room, I saw a four-year-old boy sitting in Sawyer's lap, calling him Daddy and calling Matilda Mommy.

On the screen, Sawyer was cradling the newborn version of him while my parents laughed and fastened a longevity charm around his neck.

And the child's name was the very one we had once chosen for the baby who never got to be born.

So it turned out Matilda had never been in prison at all.

For these five years, she'd been abroad the whole time, raising their child with my husband.

Only I had dragged my broken leg along, keeping watch over an empty nursery, aching for five years.

I didn't go in.

I only asked my lawyer to draw up the divorce papers for me, bought a ticket for that same day, and flew abroad.

Since they'd already been a family all along.

Then it was time for me to leave too.

Through the gap in the door, I saw Sawyer sitting in the seat of honor with Noah Whitman in his arms.

Matilda was pressed close beside him.

My parents sat on either side, busy unwrapping the child's gifts.

The photographer raised his camera and called out to them with a smile:

"Come on, all five of you, a little closer."

As Matilda leaned down toward the boy, Sawyer reached out and slid an arm around her waist, easy as breathing.

The five of them looked into the lens.

Their movements were as practiced as if they'd taken family portraits like this countless times.

In the instant the shutter flashed, I saw myself in the reflection off the glass.

Face bloodless, my left leg bent at an unnatural angle.

Hiding in a dim corner, watching them together and happy under the lights.

Like some dark little rat in a sewer, spying on someone else's happiness.

The lights in the private room dimmed.

A photo of Noah as a newborn appeared on the screen.

A date was written beneath it.

I stared at that string of numbers, and my left leg suddenly ached, hard.

That day was the day of my third leg surgery.

The crash had shattered my knee.

The first two surgeries hadn't gone well.

Before the third, the doctor told me that if this one failed too, I might never be able to walk on my own again.

The nurse held out the surgery consent form and asked me, "Where's your family?"

I called Sawyer more than a dozen times.

No one picked up.

My mother said Matilda had suddenly fallen ill in prison, and she and my father were rushing over.

The surgery couldn't be put off any longer.

In the end, in the box for the family member's signature, I scrawled my own name in crooked letters.

The nurse looked at me, her eyes full of pity.

"Going through a surgery this big all alone—aren't you afraid?"

Of course I was afraid.

Afraid I'd never stand again.

Afraid that when I woke up, there'd still be no one beside me.

But I still made excuses for them.

"My sister had something happen in prison."

"They didn't stay away on purpose."

So it turned out that on that day, Matilda hadn't been in prison at all.

She'd been abroad, giving birth to Sawyer's child.

And all those people who claimed they couldn't get away were standing at her bedside.
