Stepping off the plane onto American soil unleashed a torrent of emotion so fierce it nearly buckled my knees. Rage, sorrow, and utter betrayal churned in my chest while I breathed the familiar air of the country that had once meant comfort—home to my dearest memories of Mom.
I wasted no time. The instant I retrieved my luggage, I unlocked my phone and tapped the number of the one ally who could help me drag Daryl to justice.
“Nina?” Daniel Carter’s voice came through, tinged with astonishment. “Back in the States already?”
“We have to meet—right away,” I replied, every syllable clipped, polite niceties abandoned.
He must have heard the urgency because he didn’t hesitate. “Come to my office. I’ll rearrange everything.”
A cab whisked me downtown. While city blocks blurred past, I scrolled through message after frantic message from Daryl, all begging for answers I would never supply. Each unread notification was a neon reminder of the man who had whispered vows of devotion while secretly arranging my mother’s death.
By the time the elevator opened onto Daniel’s floor, I had rehearsed my declaration a dozen times. I strode into his office; concern clouded his eyes behind neat spectacles.
“Nina, you look like you haven’t slept. Tell me what’s happened,” he urged, waving me toward a chair.
I remained standing, palms flat on the polished oak surface. “I want an immediate dissolution of my marriage—and I intend to pursue criminal prosecution against Daryl.”
Daniel’s eyebrows shot up. “Criminal? Sit down, breathe, and start from square one.”
A humorless chuckle slipped out. “Square one? Do I begin with his adultery? The double‑life he carried on behind my back? Or do I jump straight to the part where he forged my signature to terminate my mother’s life support so his mistress could obtain a heart?”
Color drained from Daniel’s face. “He—he did what?”
“You heard exactly right.” My voice trembled yet held. “Mom had a ninety‑percent prognosis for recovery. He opted to end her treatment anyway—just to save Johanna.”
Silence stretched, heavy as wet concrete. At last Daniel nodded, jaw taut. “Evidence will be crucial. Do you have documents?”
I exhaled a shaky breath and nodded. “The hospital’s electronic records show the authorization form. Colleagues confirmed the handwriting isn’t mine.”
His expression hardened. “Then we proceed. First, the divorce petition. After that, we’ll file a wrongful‑death and forgery complaint. Be prepared—he’ll counterstrike.”
“I’m beyond caring,” I said, the words like steel rails. “The only place I want him is a cell.”

Leaving Daniel’s building, I drove straight to Maplewood Cemetery. A sharp autumn wind nipped my cheeks while gravel crunched beneath my shoes. With every step toward the granite marker, grief pressed heavier.
I knelt before the headstone, tracing cold letters that spelled out my mother’s name. Tears blurred my vision.
“Mom…” My voice splintered. “I failed to see the truth.”
A ragged sob tore free. “I believed you slipped away naturally. I never imagined someone—someone I cherished—chose that ending for you.” My hands clenched damp earth until soil filled my nails.
The wind gusted, rattling branches overhead as though nature itself mourned with me.
“I swear,” I whispered, a fierce promise taking root. “I’ll secure justice. He’ll never escape the consequences.”
I brushed away tears and laid a single white lily—her favorite bloom—at the base of the stone.
“I love you. I miss you. And I’m going to make certain he answers for every lie.”
As I rose, something fundamental shifted inside me. The ache remained, raw and aching, but beneath it flared a steady blaze—ignited the moment Daryl decided he could play God with a life that was not his to give.
He had misjudged me as fragile, naive, forever oblivious.
