The drive through Manhattan was a special kind of hell. Isla gripped the steering wheel of the sleek, black sedan, her knuckles white. Beside her, Amber Stone sat smugly in the passenger seat, humming a cheerful tune under her breath. The scent of her cloying perfume filled the small space, making Isla feel nauseous.
Amber pulled out her phone and made a call, her voice loud and deliberately cheerful. "You won't believe it, Tiffany! He was amazing. Stood up for me in front of everyone... Yes, her too. Let's just say the old Mrs. Beaumont will be history very soon."
Isla stared straight ahead, her face a cold, emotionless mask, focusing on the blur of yellow cabs and bustling sidewalks. The city lights smeared across the rain-slicked streets, mirroring the chaotic blur in her mind. Each word from Amber was another turn of the knife.
At the hospital, Isla waited in a brightly lit, sterile corridor while Amber was seen by a doctor. She sat on a hard plastic chair, feeling the curious stares of nurses who recognized her from society pages. Their whispers followed her like shadows, filled with pity and speculation. Her stomach churned. She felt like a specimen under a microscope.
Amber finally emerged, a triumphant smirk on her face. She subtly waved a small, grainy ultrasound photo before tucking it into her purse. "Doctor says everything is perfect," she chirped, holding out a prescription. "You can drop me at my place on the way back."
Isla drove her to a luxury high-rise in Tribeca, a building Isla had never seen before. Julian's secret apartment. The doorman greeted Amber by name. Of course he did.
When Isla finally returned to Greystone Manor late that night, the grand estate felt colder and more cavernous than ever. The marble floors echoed with each step, amplifying her loneliness. She headed straight for her own wing, wanting nothing more than to lock herself in her room and disappear.
She was halfway up the sweeping grand staircase when his voice, sharp and cold as ice, stopped her dead.
"Where have you been?"
Isla turned, her hand tightening on the polished banister. Julian stood at the bottom of the stairs, bathed in the dim light of a single chandelier. He looked furious. She was confused. "I did what you asked. I took her to the hospital, and then I took her home."
He started up the stairs towards her, his steps slow and menacing. "And then? Did you run straight to my grandmother to cry on her shoulder? To tell her what a monster I am?"
The accusation stunned her. "What? No. I just got back. I haven't spoken to anyone."
He reached her in two long strides, his hand clamping around her upper arm. His grip was like a steel vise, bruising and inescapable. "Don't lie to me," he snarled, his face inches from hers. "Eleanora called me an hour ago. She wanted to know what the hell happened at the board meeting today."
Isla's mind raced. Someone on the board must have called the matriarch. "I didn't call her, Julian. I swear to you, I didn't."
"You always do this," he hissed, dragging her up the rest of the stairs and down the hallway towards the master suite-his bedroom, a room they hadn't shared since their wedding night three years ago. "You run to her, you play the perfect, wronged victim, you remind her of the goddamn contract that trapped me with you."
He threw open the heavy oak door and shoved her inside. She stumbled, catching herself on the edge of the vast, cold bed. He loomed over her, his face contorted with a resentment so deep it looked like hatred. The memory of their wedding night-him standing in this very room, telling her their marriage was a business transaction and nothing more before walking out and leaving her utterly alone-flashed in her mind.
Fear, cold and sharp, finally broke through her composure. "Get off of me, Julian! Don't touch me."
Her resistance only seemed to fuel his rage. "You are my wife, Isla," he said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "It's time you remembered what that means."
He lunged for her, his hands grabbing the collar of her silk blouse. The sound of tearing fabric echoed in the silent, soundproofed room.
A scream of pure terror and desperation ripped from her throat, but it was swallowed by the heavy tapestries and thick walls. He pushed her back onto the bed, his weight pinning her down. His actions were brutal, efficient, and completely devoid of any tenderness or passion. It wasn't desire; it was punishment.
Tears streamed down her face, hot against her cold skin, as she endured the violation. Her body and spirit shattered under the assault. It was a physical manifestation of three years of his emotional neglect, his quiet hostility, his utter contempt for her.
He leaned down, his lips brushing her ear as he whispered venomously, "This is what you wanted, isn't it? The Beaumont name. The money. The status. Well, this comes with it."
When it was finally over, he got up without a word, no remorse on his face, and began to straighten his clothes as if he'd just finished a workout.
Isla curled into a tight ball on the bed, broken and sobbing quietly, clutching the torn remnants of her blouse to her chest. The physical pain was a dull ache compared to the gaping wound in her soul.
He looked down at her, his expression one of cold detachment. "Amber is pregnant," he stated, as if she didn't know. "Don't cause any trouble. Not for her, and not for me."
He turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone in the suffocating darkness.
The soft click of the door shutting felt like a final judgment, sealing her inside a prison of pain and humiliation. The man she had once foolishly hoped might learn to love her was a monster. And she was utterly, completely trapped with him.
