Chapter 1 of The Survivor's Return My Husband's Betrayal

Evelyn's POV

"Sign here, Evelyn, and the final ten million is officially cleared." Arthur slid the thick, leather-bound folder across the mahogany table.

I uncapped my fountain pen. My signature slashed across the bottom line. Five years of suffocating debt, wiped out in a few strokes of black ink.

"I never thought you'd pull it off," Arthur said. He leaned back in his chair, studying me. "When the Meridian Star vanished in the Pacific, this company was a rotting carcass. Creditors were circling. You mortgaged your own childhood home just to keep the lights on."

"The house was just brick and mortar," I said, handing the folder back to him. "The company is my future. I paid off every cent Grant lost."

Arthur nodded, a grudging respect softening his sharp features. "No one on this board disputes your control anymore, Evelyn. You earned the CEO title. The board answers to you now."

"Good. Let's move on to the Q3 projections." I tapped my pen against the table.

My secretary, Chloe, darted into the room. She ignored the startled glares from the board members and shoved a glowing tablet onto the table, sliding it right over the freshly signed contracts.

"We are in the middle of a vote, Chloe," I snapped.

"You need to see this right now," she insisted. Her hands shook violently.

A news anchor's voice blared from the tiny speakers. "Miracle in the Pacific. Grant Mercer, presumed dead for five years after the sinking of the Meridian Star, has been found alive on a remote island. A charter pilot spotted a signal fire and relayed the coordinates to the Coast Guard."

On the screen, grainy footage showed a man wrapped in a thermal blanket being transferred from a rescue launch to a Coast Guard cutter. It was Grant.

"Cancel the rest of the meeting," I told Arthur, already standing up. "My husband is coming home."

The helicopter rotors battered the air, whipping my hair across my face. Concrete dust stung my eyes. I stood at the edge of the private tarmac, staring at the bleak gray sky.

Beside me, my sixteen-year-old son, Leo, bounced on the balls of his feet. He gripped a heavy brass compass in his right hand. His knuckles were white from the strain.

"He promised," Leo shouted over the roaring wind. He rubbed his thumb over the scratched glass of the instrument. "He gave me this when I was six. He promised he'd always find his way back to us."

I placed a hand on his shoulder. The fabric of his jacket felt rigid against my palm. "He kept his word, Leo. He fought his way back to you."

"We can finally be a normal family again, Mom." A massive grin split his face, the first genuine smile I had seen on him in years. "No more empty chairs at Thanksgiving. No more reporters asking how we cope with the tragedy. Just us."

"Just us," I echoed, my chest tightening with a strange, heavy anticipation.

The black chopper broke through the low cloud cover. Its landing gear deployed, screeching as it touched down fifty yards away. The downward force of the blades pushed us back a step.

Grant stepped onto the tarmac. He looked thinner, his jaw covered in a thick, untamed beard, but the sharp slope of his cheekbones was exactly as I remembered. He wore borrowed tactical gear, looking every bit the rugged survivor the news had painted him to be.

"Dad!" Leo surged forward, breaking away from my side.

I followed a step behind, my arms opening to pull my husband back into the life we had kept warm for him.

Grant didn't look at us. He didn't reach for his son.

Instead, he turned back to the dark cabin. He extended his hand, his fingers wrapping tightly around the pale wrist of a woman. She stepped down beside him, dwarfed by an oversized yellow windbreaker.

Camera flashes exploded from the press pen behind the chain-link fence. The media had tracked the flight path.

Grant pulled the strange woman close, tucking her securely against his side.

Leo stopped dead in his tracks. His arm dropped. The brass compass clanked heavily against his thigh.

"Grant?" I asked. My voice barely carried over the dying whine of the engine.

He finally met my gaze. There was no joy in his eyes, no relief. Just a hardened, defiant stare that belonged to a stranger.

A reporter shoved a microphone through a gap in the fence, nearly tripping over a cable. "Mr. Mercer! How did you survive out there for five years? Who is the woman?"

Grant leaned toward the mic, never letting go of her hand. "Celeste kept me alive. Without her, I would have died on that island. She is my savior."

The reporters shouted over each other, hungry for the scandal, their voices blending into a chaotic roar.

I stepped into his path, forcing him to look at me again. "You've been gone five years. Your son is standing right here, waiting for his father, and you're talking about saviors?"

Grant shifted his weight, shielding Celeste slightly with his shoulder. "Evelyn, the rules of survival on that island are different from the rules here. You need to understand that. We did what we had to do."

"Understand?" I repeated. A cold numbness spread through my chest, freezing the blood in my veins. "You walked off that chopper and didn't even look at your boy. You grabbed her hand before you even acknowledged your own family."

I opened my mouth to tear into his pathetic excuse. I wanted to scream at him, to demand he explain himself to the son who had worshipped a ghost for five years.

Before I could speak, Celeste gagged.

She ripped her hand away from Grant, bent double over the tarmac, and vomited onto the concrete.

Grant dropped to his knees beside her, ignoring me completely. He rubbed soothing circles on her back. "I've got you," he murmured, his voice softer than it had ever been with me. "The flight was just too rough on you."

As she heaved, the zipper of the oversized windbreaker slid down.

Beneath her shirt, her belly swelled into a distinct, undeniable mound.

Camera shutters rattled like machine-gun fire. The press screamed questions, their lenses zoomed in on the swelling curve of her stomach, capturing the exact moment my marriage dissolved into a public spectacle.

Leo stood paralyzed. The compass slipped from his fingers, hitting the ground with a sharp metallic crack. The glass face shattered, scattering tiny shards across the tarmac.

I stared at the broken pieces, then up at the man I had mourned for half a decade. The survivor myth they were spinning on the news was a lie. He hadn't just survived. He had built a new life.

Grant stood up and wiped a spot of spit from Celeste's chin with his thumb. He turned to me, his expression devoid of guilt or shame.

"The first thing I did when I came back was find you," Grant said, his tone even. "Doesn't that prove you're the person I love most?"
