The Surrogate Bride Who Owned the Clinic Summary

Chapter 1 of The Surrogate Bride Who Owned the Clinic

On my wedding day, my fiancé was caught in the back room with my sister Camille.

I became the joke of the entire hall, standing there in white while they straightened their clothes.

Then Adrian, my childhood friend, dropped to one knee in front of everyone and proposed to save me.

After we married, he was gentle with me in every way a man could be.

It took rounds of IVF before I finally got pregnant, and after that he guarded me like glass.

I thought, finally, this is the man I was meant to end up with.

Then one evening I heard him talking to a friend through a half-open door.

"You're cruel, Adrian, after everything Seraphine's done for you, swapping the embryo so she'd carry it because Camille's too scared of the pain."

"The baby's due in two months, what's your plan?"

He sighed and said he'd give the baby to Camille, tell me it didn't survive, and spend the rest of his life making it up to me.

So that was it.

Every soft word, every careful hand on my belly, was for her.

What he forgot is that the clinic that swapped that embryo has only ever answered to my name.

I'm keeping my child, and I'm taking back everything else.

***

My fingers stopped on the cool mahogany frame of the study door.

"Seraphine won't ask questions." Adrian's voice slipped through the narrow opening, easy and dismissive.

I went still.

At thirty-two weeks pregnant, crossing the second floor of the Lowell estate had become an exercise in patience. My lower back ached, my ankles were swollen, and the child beneath my ribs seemed determined to test every available inch of space. A moment earlier, I had been thinking only about the chair at the end of the hall.

Then Julian Cross answered from inside the study.

"Have you lost your mind?" His voice was low but furious. Julian had been Adrian's closest friend since medical school and his business partner for nearly a decade. "You switched the embryos? You actually made your wife carry a child for you and Camille without telling her?"

The ache in my back disappeared beneath a rush of cold.

"Keep your voice down," Adrian snapped. A glass struck wood with a hard click.

"No. You don't get to whisper your way through this." Julian's shadow crossed the strip of light on the hall carpet. "Camille was afraid of pregnancy, so you bribed people in your own fertility center? You put an embryo made from your sperm and Camille's eggs into Seraphine and let her believe it was hers?"

My palm moved over my belly before I could stop it.

The baby kicked, sharp and certain, beneath my ribs.

Not mine by blood.

The thought should have felt impossible. Instead, it landed with the terrible precision of something that explained too much.

"It was the only workable option," Adrian said. His sigh carried the weary patience of a man explaining an inconvenience rather than a crime. "Camille couldn't tolerate a pregnancy. Seraphine was already willing to go through IVF. We changed one lab order. That's all."

"That's all?" Julian's laugh was stripped of humor. "You forged a gestational-carrier acknowledgment. You altered a medical record. You used your wife as an incubator because your mistress didn't want stretch marks."

"Don't talk about Camille that way."

The edge in Adrian's voice was unfamiliar. He had never used it with me. For almost three years, he had been unfailingly patient, considerate, and careful. He remembered which tea settled my stomach. He warmed my side of the bed in winter. He attended every prenatal appointment with one hand at the small of my back.

Now I heard what lived beneath the tenderness.

"Camille is the love of my life," he continued. "You know that. I married Seraphine because the Lowell connection secured my appointment as executive medical director. Without that marriage, the board never would have trusted me with the center."

Julian went silent.

The baby shifted again, a slow roll beneath my palm.

I stared at the thin opening between the door and frame until the room beyond blurred. I had known Adrian wanted the Lowell name. Everyone in our circle wanted something from it. But I had believed he wanted me too.

"She trusts you," Julian said at last. "She thinks that baby is the one the two of you created. She painted the nursery herself."

"She'll never know."

"What happens after the birth?"

A chair scraped across the hardwood.

"Dr. Evans will handle the delivery," Adrian said. "Seraphine will be sedated. When she wakes up, we'll tell her there was a catastrophic complication and the baby didn't survive."

For one suspended second, my lungs forgot how to work.

Julian's next words came out as a whisper. "You're going to make her mourn a living child?"

"Camille will take the baby through the service corridor. The coastal house is ready. A private nurse will stay with her until everything settles."

"And you?"

"I remain Seraphine's husband. Publicly, nothing changes. I'll help her through the loss. I'll be attentive. I'll give her whatever she wants."

"Except the truth."

"The truth would destroy everyone. This way, Camille gets the child she wants, Seraphine keeps her marriage, and I keep the center stable."

Julian swore under his breath. "You call this stable?"

"I call it practical."

My nails pressed into the painted doorframe. A fleck of white came away beneath my thumb.

Practical.

The word opened a door in my memory.

Nearly three years earlier, I had walked into a bridal suite and found my fiance, Theo, half dressed beside Camille. The wedding party had been gathering in the hall. Someone had seen. Whispers had spread before I could even decide whether to cry.

Adrian had stepped into the wreckage with a ring.

He had been my childhood friend, the one who always arrived when something went wrong. In front of a church full of guests, he had offered me a way out of public humiliation. I had mistaken timing for devotion. Perhaps Theo and Camille's affair had been real, but Adrian had known exactly how to turn my worst moment into leverage.

I did not push open the study door.

I did not scream or demand an explanation. The grief was too large for tears and too clean for panic. It settled inside me as a hard, lucid calm.

I took one silent step backward, then another, until the shadows at the end of the corridor concealed me.

My phone was in the pocket of my cardigan. I drew it out and opened an icon that looked like an ordinary calculator. A biometric prompt flashed. When I pressed my thumb to the screen, the Lowell Medical Group's encrypted audit portal appeared.

Adrian believed the fertility center was an isolated subsidiary with a pliable board. He had never bothered to study the family trust that owned sixty-eight percent of the parent company, or the emergency audit rights attached to my position as its sole beneficiary.

He had committed his perfect crime on servers I could access with one touch.

I navigated to the Lowell Center for Reproductive Medicine and watched the cursor pulse over the search field.

Embryo transfer. Patient: Seraphine Lowell Voss.

I did not open the file yet. Not in the hallway. Not while my hands were beginning to shake.

Instead, I locked the screen and returned the phone to my pocket.

Inside the study, Adrian poured another drink.

"Eight weeks," he said. "In eight weeks, this will all be over."

I turned toward the master suite, one hand beneath the weight of my belly.

Eight weeks was not an ending.

It was more than enough time to take everything back.
