Chapter 1 of The Son Who Disowned His Mom Just Signed With Her Team

Draft night, and my son thanked the woman who never raised him.

He walked across that stage and wrapped his arms around Lola, his father's first love, while sixty thousand people screamed her name.

The commentator called her the mother behind the number-one pick.

Then Caleb leaned into the microphone and told the whole country my name didn't matter.

He said his real mom just cooked at home and never understood football.

I sat in a corner no camera found and watched eighteen years burn down to two words: just cooked.

What he didn't know is what I poured into that food every single night, drop by drop, from my own blood.

What his father didn't know is whose money built the franchise that just drafted his son.

Three months ago they decided I'd married up, so I signed the papers and sold the house and bought a few worthless things.

The day after the draft, Caleb walked into his new team's boardroom and saw me at the head of the table.

He grabbed the edge of the desk to stay on his feet.

In front of me sat the ownership filings and his rookie contract, and a medical flag stamped red.

I opened the file slow.

The only bloodline in the entire league that can keep him from going feral under the moon is sitting across from him.

A career, or Aunt Lola's home cooking.

Pick one, kid.

This time, you sign.

"My mom only cooks at home. She doesn't understand football at all."

Caleb's voice echoed through the stadium speakers, sharp and amplified, cutting over the roar of fifty thousand fans.

I sat in the back row of the draft venue, hidden in a dark corner where the broadcast cameras never roamed. My knuckles pressed hard against the worn leather cover of a notebook resting on my knees. It was training log number three hundred and twelve. I knew the exact count. Eighteen years of five-in-the-morning explosive power drills, meticulously recorded page by page.

On the giant jumbotron suspended above the stage, my eighteen-year-old son smiled. He didn't look toward the shadows. He turned and wrapped his massive arms around a woman in a fitted crimson dress.

Lola. My ex-husband Desmond's first love.

"Now that is the mother who raised the number one overall pick!" the announcer roared over the cheering crowd. "Give it up for the family!"

Lola beamed, patting Caleb's broad shoulders. Desmond stood beside them, clapping his son on the back, playing the proud father for the flashing cameras.

I stared at the screen, my fingers tracing the frayed edges of the logbook.

Six months ago, Caleb sat at my kitchen counter, gulping down the dark broth I made him every single night.

"It tastes like iron today," Caleb had complained, sniffing the steaming liquid.

"Drink it," I told him, pushing the mug closer. "It will heal your torn hamstring."

"Whatever you say, Chef," he mocked, downing it in three large gulps. "I feel like I can run through a brick wall after I drink this."

"It's just a soothing soup to help you sleep, Caleb," I replied.

I hid my left hand under the dish towel. I never mentioned the sharp sting of the paring knife slicing into my fingertips. I never told him about the drops of my own blood stirred into that boiling pot, the ancient remedy that rebuilt his torn muscles and gave him that unnatural speed. Eighteen years of bleeding for him.

"Caleb, your father and Lola are here," the sideline reporter said on the screen, shoving a microphone into my son's face. "What does this mean to you?"

"Everything," Caleb answered, adjusting his new team cap. "They are my real foundation."

"We heard your biological mother, Maren, was very involved in your early training?" the reporter asked, fishing for a headline.

Caleb scoffed, a harsh sound that vibrated through the stadium floorboards. "Who told you that? Like I said, she just cooked. She wasn't built for this life."

"So the rumors of her coaching you..."

"Just rumors," Caleb interrupted, draping an arm over Lola's shoulder. "Lola is the one who taught me how to read a defense. Dad paid for the gear. They did the heavy lifting."

I closed the training log. The heavy thud of the cover snapping shut got lost in the stadium noise. My jaw tightened, then relaxed. I didn't scream. I didn't cry. The tears had dried up three months ago in a sterile lawyer's office.

"You married out of your league, Maren," Desmond had sneered back then, sliding the divorce papers across the mahogany table. "Sign them. You leave with what you brought into this marriage. Nothing."

"I built his career," I fired back, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. "I trained him. I fed him."

"By making soup?" Desmond laughed, a cruel, scraping sound.

"By waking up at five every morning for eighteen years," I countered. "By running drills in the mud while you slept off your hangovers."

Caleb sat next to his father, staring at his phone. He didn't even look up. "Dad is right. You just hover around the house. Lola actually knows the game. She introduced me to the scouts."

"Caleb?" I whispered.

He finally met my gaze, his eyes cold and distant. "Just sign it, Mom. Don't make this embarrassing."

I signed. They forced me out without a single dime of their accumulated wealth. I sold the small pre-marital house my parents left me. Desmond laughed when he heard what I did with the money.

"You sold your dead parents' house?" Desmond's voice crackled over the phone a few weeks later. "For what? Spite?"

"I needed capital," I told him.

"My lawyer says you bought worthless paper stocks and sports memorabilia," he mocked. "You really are pathetic, Maren. Enjoy your trash."

"I will," I replied, ending the call.

They thought I was a joke. A discarded housewife clinging to scraps.

The crowd erupted again, pulling me back to the glaring lights of the arena.

"We did it, baby!" Desmond shouted on screen, kissing Lola's cheek.

Caleb held up his new team jersey. The blue and silver colors of the Falcons. The team he had dreamed of joining since he was seven.

I reached into my worn canvas tote bag. My fingers brushed past the empty band-aid wrappers and found the stiff manila envelope.

I pulled it out and set it on my lap.

The glossy silver logo of the Falcons stamped the center of the folder. I pressed my index finger against the wax seal on the flap. I hadn't opened it yet. I hadn't needed to, not until the ink on the final transaction dried this morning.

A man in a replica jersey squeezed past my knees to get to the empty seat beside me. He smelled of cheap beer and stale pretzels.

"Crazy draft, huh?" the guy muttered, sitting down heavily and wiping sweat from his forehead. "Kid is a beast, though. Glad we got him."

I didn't answer. I kept my eyes on the envelope.

"You waiting for an autograph?" he asked, pointing at the folder on my lap. "Good luck getting down there. Security is tight."

"No," I said.

"Then what's in the fancy bag?" he pressed, leaning over to inspect my silence.

My fingernail dug under the flap. The thick paper tore with a sharp, satisfying rip.

I slid the heavy stack of documents out. The stadium lights caught the bold black font at the very top of the first page.

The guy next to me stopped chewing his pretzel. He leaned closer, squinting at the paper resting on my knees.

His pupils shrank.

"Wait," the stranger choked out, his voice dropping to a hoarse whisper. "Is that...?"

I stared down at the bold heading printed across the crisp white parchment.

OWNERSHIP TRANSFER — FRANCHISE.
