The Ride of Ruin - A Sister in Law’s Misadventure

I intervened to stop my sister-in-law, Nicole, from her obsession with night riding in Alba City. Despite my well-meaning intent, she retaliated by recording a video and posting it online, berating me for stifling her "passion and dreams."

Her fiery words cast me as a villain, a destroyer of youth and freedom. When her emotions escalated to threatening suicide, I became, in her eyes, the root of all her suffering.

For a time, I carried the weight of guilt and public censure. Strangers' judgment loomed heavily and those closest to us watched silently.

But when everyone assumed I would continue opposing her whims, I decided to take another route. I mustered a smile and said with feigned enthusiasm, "Nicole, I will go with you."

Her viral video painted me as the villain and with it, my personal information—my phone number, WeTalk account and even my professional credentials—were leaked to the world. My phone buzzed incessantly with hateful messages, vile attacks from faceless strangers.

The deluge of comments swirled on my screen, each one striking like a whip. My head spun and nausea clawed at my stomach.

As if this wasn’t enough, Nicole went further by exposing my role as the company’s social media operator. My work account was flooded with vitriol, tarnishing my professional reputation.

Regret consumed me, clawing at my heart.

On campus, her rivals—the girls she despised—had also joined in the trend, sharing their own images. They garnered fans and admiration for their charm and vibrancy.

Jealousy simmered in Nicole’s eyes as she glared at her screen, where their pictures were splashed across their school’s digital wall.

With her fiery determination rekindled, Nicole turned her frustrations on me once again.

"I want to show everyone I’m better than them," she declared. "My pictures are way more stunning. Why are you pretending to care? Give me the money to ride in Alba City!"

Her obsession burned brighter than reason. She was relentless, stomping through the house like a tempest, pleading, demanding and manipulating. She pouted and whined like a spoiled child, clinging to the hope that I would cave as I had before.

But I stood firm.

I frowned and said, "Do you even know how dangerous it is? The wind has been strong lately and night riding isn’t safe."

Nicole didn’t wait for me to finish before flying into another rage. "I’m going, whether you like it or not!" she shrieked.

When I refused her demands for money, she wielded her phone like a weapon. "Say no and I’ll show everyone what kind of controlling woman you really are!"

Her threat landed squarely on my greatest vulnerability—my job managing the media presence for our company’s popular show. I knew how unforgiving the public could be. The crew’s reputation left no room for negative headlines and Nicole was eager to exploit that.
