Chapter 1 of The Rejected Luna's Hidden Legacy

"I, Alpha Lucien Blackthorn, reject you, Felicia Ashbourne, as my mate and Luna."

My world ended before I remembered how to breathe.

The chandeliers above us flickered, once, twice, and every wolf in the Great Hall dropped to a crouch like an invisible hand had shoved them down. Somewhere behind me a windowpane cracked. I didn't fall. I wanted to. My legs simply forgot how.

Thirty minutes earlier, I still believed in him.

I sat at his right hand in a hall full of people who hated me, my fingers laced through his under the table where no one could see. He'd pressed his thumb slow against my knuckles all morning, an old habit, a promise without words. I'd let myself believe it meant something.

Then the doors opened, and Selene Ravenshade walked in wearing white.

She didn't rush. She never rushed. She crossed the marble like she already owned it, knelt before the council with her spine straight and her chin dipped just enough to look humble, and pressed one hand flat over her stomach.

"My Alpha," she said, "I carry your heir."

The hall erupted. Elders surged to their feet, staffs cracking against stone. A noblewoman near the front pressed both hands to her mouth, delighted. Somewhere behind me a servant girl went white and looked at her feet. A warrior I recognized ... one who'd guarded my chambers for two years ... wouldn't meet my eyes at all.

Under the table, Lucien's hand went rigid in mine. Then it was gone.

Selene's gaze found me over her shoulder. Soft. Sweet. Aimed like a blade.

"Lady Felicia has always wanted an heir for this pack," she said, dabbing at an eye that wasn't wet. "I'm only giving them what she couldn't."

Half the hall applauded. My throat closed around every word I might have said.

The eldest elder didn't wait for me to recover. He struck his staff against the marble, and the sound rang through my chest like a verdict already written.

"Alpha." His eyes cut to Lucien, merciless. "Choose your mate, or choose your people. Reject the wolfless Luna tonight, or this council dissolves your authority before sunrise."

Lucien didn't answer right away. His jaw worked. Under the table his knee had started to bounce, a tell I'd memorized years ago and never once seen fail him in public.

I stood before I decided to.

"Look at me."

It came out steadier than I felt. Every head in the hall turned. Lucien's did too, slowly, like it cost him something.

"Did you sleep with her?"

Silence swallowed the room whole.

"Answer me."

He didn't. His throat moved. His hands, at his sides, curled into fists and released, curled and released, like he was counting something only he could hear. That silence told me more than a confession ever could have.

His wolf was screaming. I could see it in the gold bleeding through his irises, in the way his shoulders had gone tight enough to shake, in the tendons standing out along his throat like he was holding a door shut with his whole body.

Reject her and I will end you, that gold said, wordless and furious.

If I don't, they'll end her instead, his stillness answered back.

He looked at his people. At the elders with their staffs raised like weapons. At Selene, kneeling in her white dress with her hand still pressed to a stomach none of us had proof of. At me, last, longest.

Then he closed his eyes, and I understood he'd already chosen, somewhere between the elder's ultimatum and my question he never answered.

Duty. Not me.

"I, Alpha Lucien Blackthorn..."

The words I'd already lived through began again, slower this time, each one its own small execution.

"...reject you, Felicia Ashbourne..."

Pain tore through my chest like claws raking from the inside out. I pressed a hand to my sternum and felt something warm slip over my lip ... blood, thin and hot, dripping onto the silver of my gown before I understood what it was. Every wolf in the hall keeled forward, whimpering, hands braced on the floor like the air itself had turned to weight.

Across from me, Lucien staggered. A dark line broke from his nose. He didn't wipe it away. His whole body had gone rigid, fighting something under his skin that wanted out, and for one instant his hand jerked toward me ... an inch, maybe two, pure instinct, pure wolf.

"Don't touch the rejected," the elder barked.

Lucien froze mid-reach. His hand hung in the space between us, shaking, before he forced it back to his side like he was breaking his own bone to do it.

The second fire didn't come from him.

It came from my collarbone, from the birthmark I'd spent my whole life hiding under high collars, terrified of what people would think if they saw it. Heat seared through the fabric. I grabbed at my collar with my free hand, certain it was branding straight through to bone.

No one noticed. Selene was too busy letting a single tear finally fall, right on cue. The elders were too busy watching Lucien for signs of weakness. Only the light gave me away ... a thin, silver pulse under silk, there and gone, like something ancient stretching after a very long sleep.

Almost no one.

Near the back, half-swallowed by shadow among the visiting diplomats, an old man went rigid.

His goblet slipped from his fingers and shattered against the marble. He didn't seem to hear it. His guards turned toward him, alarmed, hands twitching toward their blades, but he was already sinking to one knee, his face the color of old parchment, his lips shaping words before sound came.

"No," he breathed. "...she bears the Star of Lunareth."

Nobody else heard him. The hall was too busy congratulating Selene, too busy watching Lucien finish what he'd started, too busy pretending they didn't see the blood on my mouth.

"...as my mate and Luna."

The final word landed like a door slamming on my whole life.

Something that had lived in my chest since the night he first marked me simply stopped. I felt it go. I felt myself go with it, hollow and ringing, and I locked my knees to keep from folding in front of three hundred people who'd come to watch.

Lucien looked at me one last time. For a single unguarded second his composure cracked wide open ... grief, raw, nothing royal about it, his eyes glassy and his throat working around words he wasn't allowed to say. Then the mask came back down, and he was a stranger wearing a face I used to trace in the dark.

"Tell me you don't love me," I whispered.

He said nothing. That was answer enough to break the last thing in me still standing.

As the council rose and the hall began to empty around Selene's triumphant smile, an old healer pressed through the crowd toward me, murmuring some excuse about my split lip. Her fingers closed briefly around my wrist to steady me.

She went still.

Her thumb pressed once, twice, against my pulse point, disbelieving. Her eyes climbed to mine, wide, and her voice dropped so low only I could hear it.

"Impossible," she breathed. "You're pregnant."

I didn't have time to ask her anything else.

Because across the hall, the old man had finally forced himself upright, one hand braced against a pillar, staring at the fading silver light beneath my collar like he'd seen a ghost climb out of its grave.

"The Moon Goddess forgive us," he said, and this time his voice carried, cutting clean through the noise, through Selene's smile, through Lucien's back still turned toward me.

"...we rejected the future Queen."
