Steve's brow furrowed. "Ava? What's wrong?"
She gripped his sleeve, steadying herself as the ballroom tilted.
"I don't... feel right. The room is spinning."
His strong arm wrapped around her waist instantly, holding her upright.
"Easy. I've got you." Concern etched his sharp features. "Your skin is burning up."
Micheal appeared like a storm, shoving between them.
"Get your hands off her, Reynolds!" He pulled Ava against his chest, but his touch now felt suffocating.
"What did you do to her?"
"Nothing," Steve growled. "She needs air. Look at her, O'Hara. She's not well."
Ava clutched Micheal's jacket, words slurring. "Micheal... help. Everything's wrong. My head... it's too loud."
Micheals's face showed perfect worry, yet his eyes held something colder.
"It's okay, darling. I'm here. Just breathe. Maybe you drank too fast."
He signaled security discreetly while stroking her hair. "Let's get you somewhere quiet."
Steve stepped forward, voice low and lethal.
"She needs a doctor. Now."
Ava's knees buckled.
Colors blurred into streaks of light.
Through the haze she saw her father Arthur across the room, face pale as security approached him with grim expressions. Handcuffs glinted.
"Dad?" she whispered in confusion.
Micheal held her tighter. "Don't worry about anything, Ava. I'll take care of everything."
The last thing she felt before darkness swallowed her was Steve Reynolds' furious gaze burning into her, promising violence, and Micheal's satisfied grip tightening like chains.
Her world shattered in silence.
Ava woke to sterile white walls and the sharp sting of antiseptic in her nose.
Her head throbbed like someone had split it open.
She tried to sit up, but strong hands gently pushed her back against the hospital pillow.
"Easy, baby. You had a rough night." Sam sat beside the bed, his blue eyes soft with concern.
He brushed damp hair from her forehead, his touch tender.
"The doctors said it was a panic attack. Too much stress from the gala."
Ava swallowed, her throat dry and raw. "Panic attack? Sam, I felt... poisoned.
Everything was spinning. Where's my father? I saw handcuffs."
Micheal's expression tightened. He squeezed her hand, leaning closer.
"Your father was arrested last night. Embezzlement. Money laundering. They had solid evidence, Lois. Years of it. I'm so sorry."
"No." Her voice cracked. She pulled her hand away.
"That's impossible. He built everything with his own hands. You were with him every day. How could this happen?"
Micheal sighed heavily and stood, pacing to the window.
"I tried to warn him. Some deals he made behind our backs... they caught up. But I'm handling it. I've already spoken to the lawyers. For now, you need to rest and stay out of the spotlight. The press is calling you unstable after what happened at the gala."
Avas heart hammered. "Unstable? I drank one glass of champagne and the room collapsed. You gave it to me."
He turned back, eyes wide with hurt.
"You think I could hurt you? After everything I've done for us?" He sat again and cupped her face.
"I love you, Ava. We'll get through this together. Just trust me."
His lips brushed hers, soft and reassuring, but the kiss felt like chains tightening.
The door opened and Marcy McGil swept in carrying flowers, her red hair glowing under the harsh lights. She set them down and pulled Lois into a tight hug.
"Oh honey, you poor thing. The whole city is talking. You had quite the episode last night."
Ava stiffened in her arms. "Marcy, tell me what really happened. I saw my father dragged away in cuffs."
Marcy exchanged a quick glance with Micheal before sitting on the edge of the bed. "It's bad, sweetie. The board has already voted. Micheal's stepping in as acting chairman while your father fights the charges. It's the only way to save the company."
"Save it?" Ava laughed bitterly. "From what? My father is innocent
Micheal stepped forward, voice low. "We're doing what's necessary. The stock is crashing. If I don't take control now, Reynolds will swoop in and tear Phelps Jewelry apart."
At the mention of Steve's name, Ava's pulse quickened.
She remembered his gray eyes, the way his fingers had traced her jaw.
"Reynolds was there last night. He saw everything."
Marcy smiled sweetly, but her green eyes stayed cold.
"Stay away from that man. He's poison. Right now you need to focus on getting better. The doctors recommended a short stay at a private facility. Just until the dust settles."
Ava's stomach dropped. "A facility? You want to lock me up?"
Sam took her hand again, gripping tighter. "It's for your own good, darling. I'll visit every day. I promise."
She yanked her hand free. "Get out. Both of you."
Hours later, the room had grown quiet and heavy.
Ava stared at the ceiling when the door clicked open again.
Steve Reynolds stepped inside, closing it softly behind him
. His tall frame filled the space, dark suit perfectly tailored.
"You shouldn't be here," she whispered, but her body betrayed her by sitting up straighter.
Steve crossed to the bed in three strides.
"I had to see you. They won't let me stay long." He sat on the edge, closer than appropriate. His hand found hers.
"What happened last night wasn't a panic attack, Ava."
His touch sent warmth racing up her arm. She didn't pull away. "Then what was it?"
"Betrayal." His gray eyes burned with quiet fury. "O'Hara moves fast. Your father's arrest, your public collapse, the board already handing him control. It's coordinated."
Ava searched his face. "Why do you care? You barely know me."
Steve's thumb stroked the inside of her wrist, slow and deliberate.
"Because I saw you last night. Not the heiress. The woman trapped in a cage. And I can't stop thinking about how your skin felt under my fingers." He leaned closer, voice dropping.
"You deserve better than a man who drugs you to steal your empire."
Her breath caught. "Prove it."
He cupped the back of her neck, pulling her into a kiss that started fierce then softened into something dangerously tender.
Heat flooded her body as his lips moved against hers with controlled hunger.
The door suddenly burst open.
Micheal stood in the doorway, face twisted with rage. "Get your filthy hands off her, Reynolds!"
Steve rose slowly, placing himself between Sam and the bed.
"She deserves the truth. Something you clearly can't give her."
Ava's heart pounded as she touched her swollen lips. "Micheal, leave. I need to speak with him."
Micheal laughed coldly.
"After everything, you let this shark kiss you? While your father rots in a cell?" He stepped closer, voice shaking with emotion.
"I've loved you for years. Protected you. And this is how you repay me?
Steve's shoulders tensed. "Protected her by poisoning her champagne? By framing Arthur?"
Micheal's eyes flashed. "You have no proof. Get out before I call security."
Ava felt torn between the two men, her body still humming from Steve's kiss.
"Both of you, stop. I need air. I need answers."
Steve looked back at her, his gaze intense. "Come with me, Ava. I can help you."
Micheal grabbed her arm.
"She's not going anywhere with you."
Lois pulled away from Micheal's grip, her head still spinning from the remnants of whatever had been in that glass. "I said stop touching me!"
Micheal's face softened instantly, switching back to the caring fiancé.
"Baby, please. You're not thinking clearly. After what happened to your mother, the stress is too much. Let me take care of you."
The mention of her mother's death sent fresh pain through her chest.
Ava stood on shaky legs. "My mother died terrified of what was happening to the company. Now my father is in prison and you want to send me away too?"
Steve extended his hand toward her. "You don't have to choose their version of your life. Walk out with me right now."
Micheal blocked the door. "If you leave with him, everything falls apart. The company. Your father's chance at freedom. Us."
Ava looked between them, heart tearing.
Steve's presence felt like dangerous freedom. Micheal's like comfortable chains.
Her body still remembered both their touches - one possessive, one electric.
She took one step toward Steve.
Micheal's expression darkened. "Think very carefully, Ava. Once you walk through that door, there's no coming back."
Her bare feet felt cold against the hospital floor as the two men waited for her decision.
Outside, she could hear distant voices and the low hum of New York waiting to swallow her whole.
