Chapter 1 of The Quarterback's Billionaire

The Secret Girlfriend's Exit

The heavy bass from the VIP lounge of The Apex thumped against my ribs, but it did nothing to drown out the hollow, unsteady rhythm of my own heart.

From my secluded corner booth, partially obscured by a towering faux palm tree and dim amber lighting, I watched the man I loved command the room. Liam Vance. Twenty-nine years old, devastatingly handsome in his custom-tailored Tom Ford suit, and arguably the most ruthless sports agent and franchise owner in the country. He held a glass of expensive scotch in one hand, charming a group of wealthy investors and star athletes with the effortless, magnetic confidence that had drawn me to him three years ago.

I took a slow sip of my club soda, feeling like a ghost haunting my own life. I was twenty-one, a junior at a prestigious D1 university, and officially, I didn't exist in Liam's world.

"Another drink, miss?" a waiter asked, pausing by my shadowy alcove. He cast a brief, judgmental glance over my simple oversized college hoodie, faded denim jeans, and scuffed Converse—a stark, almost offensive contrast to the glittering designer cocktail dresses worn by the supermodels and influencers draped over the athletes nearby.

"No, thank you," I murmured, sinking deeper into the plush leather seating, pulling the hood up slightly to shadow my face.

This had been my reality for the past three years. The hidden girlfriend. The secret he kept locked away in his sprawling, sterile penthouse.

“It’s for your own good, Harper,” Liam’s voice echoed in my head, a patronizing mantra I had swallowed like bitter medicine for far too long. “You’re still a student. There’s an eight-year age gap between us. If the press finds out about you, they’ll tear you apart. They’ll call you a gold digger, a sugar baby. They’ll ruin your reputation before your life even begins. I’m just protecting you, baby.”

Protection.

That was the word he always weaponized against my doubts. At first, naive and hopelessly in love, I thought it was intensely romantic. The powerful, older billionaire shielding his normal, college-girl girlfriend from the vicious spotlight of fame. I accepted the dates in private, windowless dining rooms. I accepted the non-disclosure agreements he made the apartment staff sign. I accepted the absolute ban on posting anything about my life on social media. I even accepted that I could only attend his team's games by sitting in the nosebleeds or sneaking into a private luxury box through the service elevator, arriving after kickoff and leaving before the final whistle.

I had spent my nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first birthdays blowing out candles in an empty penthouse, waiting for him to return from public galas where he walked the red carpet alone.

But tonight, the illusion of romance had finally shattered, and the champagne in my throat tasted like ash. Liam's sports management agency had just secured a historic television broadcast deal, cementing his empire. It was a night of monumental celebration. And yet, here I was, tucked away behind a fake plastic tree like a dirty little secret, not even allowed to stand by his side and toast to his success.

A sudden roar of laughter erupted from the center of the room, pulling my attention.

Across the lounge, the real star of the night was holding court. Jace Vance. Liam’s younger brother, the nation's most coveted college quarterback, and the undeniable golden boy of the sports world. At twenty-one—the exact same age as me—Jace was a force of nature. Broad-shouldered, ruggedly handsome, and dangerously charismatic, he was currently throwing his head back in a booming laugh, completely unbothered by the flashing cameras of the VIP photographers. He wore a designer leather jacket over a simple white tee, living fiercely and unapologetically in the light.

He was the starkest contrast imaginable to his older brother. While Liam was all calculated control, hiding in the shadows of his own reputation, Jace was pure, unfiltered wildfire. He didn't care what the media said; he thrived in the center of the storm.

For a split second, through the sea of moving bodies, Jace's sharp, predatory gaze flicked toward my dark corner. His intense blue eyes locked onto mine, a faint, knowing smirk playing on his lips.

Before I could process the sudden jolt in my chest, a broad figure stepped into my line of sight, blocking Jace completely.

Liam.

He slipped into the shadows of my booth, the smell of expensive cologne and victory rolling off him. He sat down next to me, meticulously leaving exactly six inches of space between us. Always careful. Always vigilant.

"You okay, baby?" Liam asked, his voice a low, intimate rumble that used to send shivers down my spine. Tonight, it just made my chest tight with suffocating anxiety.

"I'm fine," I said evenly. "Congratulations on the deal. Everyone is thrilled."

"Couldn't have done it without you holding down the fort at home," he said, offering a tight, fleeting smile before his gray eyes darted anxiously toward the entrance of the VIP area. "Listen, Harper. The paparazzi have caught wind of the party. They're swarming the front entrance and the main lobby. It's a circus out there."

My stomach plummeted. I knew exactly what was coming next. The script never changed.

Liam reached into his tailored suit pocket and pulled out the sleek black keycard to his penthouse. He slid it across the table toward me, concealing it under a white cocktail napkin as if it were contraband.

"My driver, Marcus, is waiting in the alley behind the kitchen," Liam instructed, his tone shifting from loving boyfriend to the crisp, authoritative voice he used to command his rookie players. "Take the service corridor down. Don't look at anyone, keep your hood up. Marcus will take you back to the apartment. I have to stay and do press, but I'll be home in a few hours to celebrate with you properly."

I stared at the black keycard resting under the napkin. It looked like a tombstone for my self-respect.

"The service corridor," I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper, heavy with exhaustion. "Past the dumpsters and the grease traps."

"Harper, be reasonable," Liam sighed, a hint of impatience bleeding into his tone. He reached out to touch my hand, then abruptly pulled back, remembering where we were. "If a photographer snaps a picture of you leaving with me, it's over. The headlines will write themselves. 'Sports Mogul's Secret College Sugar Baby.' I won't let them drag your name through the mud. You know how cruel the internet is. They'll tear you to shreds."

"Are you protecting my name, Liam?" I finally looked up, meeting his cool, calculating gray eyes. "Or yours?"

He frowned, his thick eyebrows drawing together in a rare display of confusion. "What is that supposed to mean? Everything I do is to protect you. You're a twenty-one-year-old student. You don't understand how ruthless this industry is. If people think you're with me for my money—"

"I don't care about your money," I interrupted, my voice steady, though my hands were trembling in my lap.

"I know that," Liam said smoothly, slipping instantly into his placating, daddy-knows-best persona. "But the world doesn't. You're a sweet, normal girl, Harper. You're not built for the viciousness of the media. Just take the card, go home, and I'll see you later. We'll order your favorite takeout."

A sweet, normal girl.

He really believed that. For three years, I had played the part of the unassuming, middle-class college student so perfectly that even the man sleeping next to me bought the illusion hook, line, and sinker. I had hidden my true self—my family, my legacy, the billion-dollar empire I was destined to inherit—because I desperately wanted to know what it felt like to be loved just for being Harper. Not for being the sole heiress to the Sterling athletic apparel conglomerate, the very company that sponsored half the players in Liam's agency.

I had stripped myself of my crown to play a peasant in his kingdom, and my reward was being shoved out the back door like trash because he was ashamed of the narrative.

"No," I said quietly.

Liam blinked. It was a word he rarely heard, and certainly never from me. "No?"

"I'm not taking the service elevator. I'm not sneaking past the dumpsters. And I'm not going back to your apartment." I picked up the black keycard, my fingers brushing the smooth plastic one last time, before I dropped it directly into his glass of scotch.

The splash was small, but the shock on Liam's face was monumental.

"Harper, what the hell are you doing?" he hissed, leaning in, his eyes darting frantically around the room to see if anyone had noticed. Even now, his first instinct was damage control.

"I'm done, Liam," I said, the realization settling over me like a sudden, refreshing rainstorm. The suffocating weight in my chest vanished, replaced by an intoxicating clarity. "I'm done being your dirty little secret. I'm done letting you disguise your cowardice as protection."

"Cowardice?" His jaw clenched, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. He looked genuinely offended. "You're throwing a childish tantrum because I'm trying to save you from being branded a gold digger? Grow up, Harper. This is the real world. You need me to navigate it for you."

"You're right," I said, sliding out of the booth and standing up to my full height. I smoothed down my cheap college hoodie, no longer trying to hide inside it. "It is the real world. And in the real world, a man who truly loves a woman stands proudly beside her in the light. He doesn't lock her in the dark just to protect his own pristine image."

"You're making a massive mistake," Liam warned, his voice low and dangerous, the chilling tone of a man used to absolute obedience. "If you walk out that door right now, we're done. I won't come chasing after you when you finally realize how harsh the spotlight really is without my protection."

A genuine, effortless smile graced my lips for the first time all night. It felt liberating.

"Don't worry, Liam," I said softly. "I've always been more comfortable in the spotlight than you could ever imagine."

I didn't wait for his response. I turned on my heel and walked away.

I didn't head for the main entrance where the paparazzi were swarming. Not yet. I didn't want my face plastered on the tabloids next to the pathetic title of 'Liam Vance's Ex-Girlfriend'. When the world finally learned my name, it would be entirely on my own terms.

Instead, I took the hallway leading to the back exit, the very route he had commanded me to take. But this time, I wasn't sneaking away in shame. I was marching toward my freedom.

I pushed open the heavy metal exit doors. The chill of the autumn night hit me instantly, biting through my thin hoodie, but I welcomed the icy sting. It felt like waking up from a three-year coma. The alley was dark, smelling of stale beer and damp asphalt, illuminated only by a single flickering streetlamp.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and navigated to a contact I had kept muted since the day I moved into my college dorm.

I pressed call. It rang exactly once.

"Miss Sterling," a crisp, distinguished British voice answered immediately.

"Arthur," I breathed, staring down the empty alley, my posture straightening. "It's time. I'm ready to come home."

"Understood, Miss. We have been waiting."

"I'm at the back alley of The Apex club."

"Look to your right, Miss."

I turned my head. At the far end of the alley, where the grimy shadows met the neon glow of the main street, a pair of sleek LED headlights flared to life. The massive, imposing silhouette of a custom jet-black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided silently forward, its tires purring against the pavement until it stopped just inches from where I stood.

The rear door swung open, revealing an interior of pristine cream leather and warm ambient lighting. Arthur, my family's head of security and my most trusted confidant, stepped out. He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke suit, an umbrella resting casually over his arm, his expression a mixture of profound relief and unwavering respect.

"Welcome back, Miss Harper," Arthur said, bowing slightly. "Your father will be exceedingly pleased."

I looked back at the rusted metal door of the club, thinking of the man inside who thought I was a helpless little bird with nowhere to go. I thought of the empty penthouse, the hidden dinners, the patronizing lectures about protecting my non-existent fragile reputation.

I reached up, grabbed the hem of the cheap college hoodie, and pulled it over my head, tossing it directly into the nearby dumpster. Underneath, I wore a simple silk camisole, but as the cool air hit my bare shoulders, I had never felt more powerful.

"Tell the board to prepare for an emergency meeting tomorrow morning, Arthur," I said, stepping into the luxurious warmth of the Rolls-Royce. "It's time the sports world remembers exactly who owns the field."

The heavy doors clicked shut, and the Rolls-Royce melted into the night. Liam Vance thought he was protecting a helpless college girl. He had no idea he'd just thrown away the queen.

The Billionaire Heiress Returns

The Rolls-Royce Phantom glided smoothly through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate, the tires crunching softly against the pristine white gravel of the long driveway.

Through the tinted window, I watched the sprawling limestone mansion come into view. It sat on twenty acres of prime, secluded real estate, a fortress of old money and generational power. For the last three years, I had treated this place like a museum I only visited on holidays, preferring the cramped, cinderblock walls of my university dorm or the sterile, modern coldness of Liam's penthouse.

I had been so desperate to be "normal." I had wanted to prove that a girl born with a silver spoon could survive on instant ramen, late-night study sessions, and the meager affection of a man who treated her like a fragile liability.

What a monumental waste of time.

The car rolled to a halt in front of the grand entrance. Before I could even reach for the handle, Arthur had the door open, offering a white-gloved hand to help me step out into the crisp night air.

"Welcome home, Miss Sterling," greeted the line of household staff gathered on the illuminated marble steps.

"Thank you," I said, my voice steadier than it had been in years. I didn't bypass them to scurry up the back stairs like I used to when I felt guilty about my wealth. I walked straight through the massive oak double doors, the heels of my boots clicking authoritatively against the foyer's imported Italian marble.

I headed straight for my suite in the east wing. Pushing open the doors, I stepped into the massive walk-in closet that was easily three times the size of my college dorm room. It was lined with glass displays of designer shoes, rows of bespoke handbags, and racks of haute couture I hadn't touched since I started dating Liam.

I walked over to the vanity mirror and stared at my reflection. I looked tired. The girl staring back at me was pale, her hair tied in a messy knot, hiding inside a silk camisole. She looked like a girl who had spent three years shrinking herself to fit into the tiny, dark box a man had built for her.

"Never again," I whispered to the empty room.

I stripped off the camisole, tossing it into the trash can alongside the memory of the back alley at The Apex. Tomorrow, the world would meet Harper Sterling. And she wasn't anyone's secret.

Liam Vance woke up to the harsh glare of the morning sun cutting through the floor-to-ceiling windows of his penthouse.

He threw his arm across the king-sized bed, expecting to feel the soft, warm curve of Harper's waist. Instead, his hand met cold, unwrinkled Egyptian cotton sheets.

Liam frowned, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Harper?" he called out, his deep voice echoing off the minimalist concrete walls.

Silence.

He swung his legs out of bed, a familiar spark of annoyance flaring in his chest. He had come home from the victory party at 3:00 AM, exhausted from charming investors and managing the press. He had expected Harper to be asleep, or at the very least, waiting up to pout about their fight at the club so he could comfort her, kiss her forehead, and remind her that he knew best.

Instead, the apartment had been dark.

He walked out of the master bedroom and down the long hallway, pausing outside the guest room she used as her study space. Empty. He checked the sprawling kitchen. Spotless.

"Stubborn girl," Liam muttered, shaking his head. He walked over to the kitchen island to pour himself a cup of black coffee.

That was when he saw it.

Sitting dead center on the pristine quartz countertop was the matte black American Express Centurion card he had given her on their one-year anniversary. It was resting perfectly straight, right next to the spare key fob to the penthouse.

Liam stared at the two items, a scoff escaping his lips.

He took his coffee mug and strode purposefully back to the master suite, sliding open the frosted glass doors to her side of the massive walk-in closet.

He stopped short.

The closet wasn't entirely empty, but what she had left behind spoke volumes. Every single designer dress, every pair of Louboutins, every diamond necklace and Hermès bag he had ever bought for her was neatly organized and left behind. The only things missing were the cheap college hoodies, the faded jeans, the scuffed Converse, and her textbooks.

She had packed her meager, "normal" life into a duffel bag and vanished.

Liam let out a dark, incredulous laugh, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "Unbelievable. She's actually throwing a tantrum."

He walked back to the kitchen, picking up his phone to check his banking app. He pulled up the transaction history for the black card. The last charge was from three days ago: an $8.50 latte and muffin combo at the campus library café.

He shook his head, a patronizing smile returning to his face. She left the card. She left the clothes. She really thinks she's making a profound statement.

Harper was twenty-one. She came from a painfully average, middle-class family in Ohio—at least, that was the story she had vaguely alluded to when they first met, and he had never bothered to dig deeper. She had student loans, a part-time campus job that barely paid for her textbooks, and zero connections in the real world.

She was playing a dangerous game of chicken, and Liam was the master of waiting people out.

"Give it three days," Liam said to the empty penthouse, tossing the black card back onto the counter. "When she realizes how cold it is outside, and how expensive rent in this city really is, she'll come knocking. She needs me to protect her. She just doesn't realize it yet."

Feeling utterly vindicated, Liam downed the rest of his coffee. He had an empire to run. He didn't have time to indulge a college girl's dramatic rebellion. She would be back by Friday, apologizing for her outburst.

He was sure of it.

"The Vanguard files, Miss Sterling."

I didn't look up as my assistant, a razor-sharp woman named Evelyn, placed a thick leather-bound folder onto the massive mahogany desk in front of me.

"Thank you, Evelyn," I said, my pen gliding across the bottom of a multi-million dollar logistics contract.

I was sitting in the corner office on the top floor of the Sterling Athletics Tower. The view of the city skyline was spectacular, but I barely noticed it. I was wearing a blood-red, tailored Alexander McQueen suit that fit like a second skin, my hair pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving ponytail.

It was 9:00 AM. I had been in the building since six, officially taking over the reins from my father, who had happily fast-tracked my ascension to CEO the moment I told him I was done playing dress-up at university.

Sterling Athletics wasn't just a brand; it was the lifeblood of the modern sports industry. We manufactured the gear, sponsored the stadiums, and wrote the checks that kept franchises afloat. And for the last three years, Liam Vance had built his reputation by securing exclusive Sterling sponsorship deals for his athletes.

He thought he was a self-made titan. He had no idea he had been building his castle on my family's land.

I opened the Vanguard file. Inside was the complete portfolio of the Vance Sports Agency, alongside the financial records for the New York Titans—the professional football team Liam had recently purchased a minority stake in, and the very same team his younger brother, Jace, was projected to be drafted by next year.

"Evelyn," I called out, flipping through Liam's arrogant, inflated projections for the next quarter.

She stepped immediately back into the office. "Yes, Miss Sterling?"

"The Vance Agency is requesting a twenty percent increase in our sponsorship payout for their top-tier athletes next season," I noted, my eyes scanning the audacious numbers. "And they want us to secure the naming rights for the Titans' new training facility."

"That is correct, ma'am. Mr. Vance has been calling the board all week, pressing for an answer. Should I have legal draft a standard denial?"

A slow, dangerous smile curved my lips. I closed the folder and leaned back in my father's—my—leather executive chair.

"No," I said smoothly. "Don't deny it. But don't approve it, either. Tell the board we are putting a freeze on all negotiations with the Vance Agency."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, though her professional demeanor didn't crack. "A freeze? Mr. Vance is known for being... aggressively impatient. He will demand an explanation."

"I'm counting on it," I replied, standing up and smoothing the lapels of my crimson blazer. "In fact, I think it's time Sterling Athletics did a comprehensive, on-site audit of our investments. Draft an itinerary. I want to personally inspect the Titans' facility and the Vance Agency roster today."

Evelyn's tablet beeped as she rapidly typed the orders. "I'll notify their management immediately, Miss Sterling. Should I tell them who is coming?"

"Just tell them the new CEO of Sterling Athletics is paying a surprise visit," I said, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows to look down at the city below. "Let's see how well Liam Vance rolls out the red carpet when he doesn't know who he's bowing to."

Across the city, inside the sleek, glass-walled conference room of the Vance Agency, Liam was in the middle of lecturing his senior agents when the door burst open.

His lead PR director, Chloe, rushed in, her face flushed and her tablet clutched tightly to her chest.

"Liam, I'm so sorry to interrupt," she gasped, completely ignoring the irritated glares of the senior staff.

"We are in the middle of a strategy meeting, Chloe," Liam snapped, his patience already wearing thin from Harper's disappearance. "This better be a five-alarm fire."

"It's Sterling Athletics," Chloe said, her voice trembling slightly. The entire room went dead silent at the mention of their biggest financial backer. "Richard Sterling officially stepped down this morning. The board just named his heir as the new acting CEO."

Liam sat up straighter, his authoritative aura immediately snapping into focus. This was massive news. A new CEO meant new negotiations, new relationships to exploit, and a chance to cement his dominance in the industry.

"Who is it?" Liam asked, his mind already spinning with strategies. "Did they bring in an outsider? Is it someone from the board?"

"They haven't released the name to the press yet," Chloe said, swallowing hard. "But Liam... the new CEO's office just called. They've frozen all our contract negotiations."

Liam stood up sharply, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. "Frozen? On whose authority?"

"The new CEO's. And there's more," Chloe added, looking terrified. "The CEO is doing a surprise on-site inspection of the Titans' facility and our agency. Today. In two hours."

Liam's jaw tightened. A freeze on contracts and an unannounced inspection on day one. This new CEO was trying to establish dominance, trying to put him in his place.

We'll see about that, Liam thought, his competitive instincts flaring. No one intimidated Liam Vance.

"Cancel the rest of my day," Liam barked, adjusting his cuffs and storming toward the door. "Call the stadium. Tell the coaching staff to have the entire roster on their best behavior, especially Jace. I want the facility spotless. I want VIP catering in the executive suite."

"Yes, sir," Chloe scrambled after him. "What should we prepare for the CEO?"

"Prepare everything," Liam ordered, stepping into the private elevator with a predatory smirk. "I don't care who this new Sterling heir is. By the end of the day, I'll have them eating out of the palm of my hand."

He wanted to wait out a broke college girl. Instead, he was about to meet the billionaire who owned his entire playbook.

Who's the Boss Now

The Vance Agency headquarters and the adjoining Titans’ training facility were a monument to modern sports extravagance. Floor-to-ceiling glass, brushed steel, and the imposing blue and silver logo of the Titans plastered across every visible surface.

From the back of the Rolls-Royce, I watched the massive glass doors of the facility draw closer. Two years ago, I had sneaked into this very building through the loading dock, wearing a baseball cap pulled low over my face, just to bring Liam the lunch he had forgotten. He had scolded me for twenty minutes about the "risk" I had taken.

Today, I wasn't using the loading dock.

"We have arrived, Miss Sterling," Arthur announced from the driver's seat as the vehicle glided to a halt perfectly aligned with the VIP red carpet that had clearly just been unrolled.

Through the tinted windows, I could see the welcoming committee. Liam Vance stood front and center, flanked by his senior partners, PR team, and the Titans' head coach. Liam looked predictably flawless in a navy blue bespoke suit, his posture exuding an arrogant mix of respect and command. He was ready to charm the new billionaire in town.

Just behind Liam, leaning carelessly against a concrete pillar with his arms crossed, was Jace.

Even in casual athletic wear—a tight gray t-shirt that clung to his broad chest and black sweatpants—Jace managed to pull focus from everyone else in the room. He looked bored, chewing on a piece of gum, his unruly dark hair falling slightly over his piercing blue eyes. Unlike his brother, Jace wasn’t here to kiss the ring. He was just doing what he was told.

"Are you ready, Miss?" Evelyn asked, sitting beside me with her tablet poised.

"More than ready," I replied, adjusting the cuffs of my crimson Alexander McQueen blazer.

Arthur stepped out and opened the rear door. A hush fell over the welcoming committee as a pair of Christian Louboutin stilettos touched the red carpet.

I stepped out of the Rolls-Royce into the blinding mid-morning sun.

For a split second, the world seemed to freeze. I didn't look at the PR team, or the coach, or the cameras that the agency's internal media team had set up to document the historic visit.

I looked directly at Liam.

The confident, predatory smile he had prepared slowly melted off his face, replaced by a look of profound, paralyzing confusion. His gray eyes darted from my face, to my tailored suit, to the imposing Rolls-Royce, and finally to Evelyn and Arthur flanking me like a royal guard.

"Harper?" Liam's voice cracked. The single word barely made it past his lips, devoid of its usual authority. He took a half-step forward, his brain clearly misfiring. "What... what are you doing here? Did you follow me?"

He still couldn't compute it. Even standing here, surrounded by my security detail, his ego was desperately trying to fit me back into the tiny box he had built for me. She's just a college girl. She's throwing a tantrum. She followed me to beg for forgiveness.

Before I could answer, Chloe, his frantic PR director, stepped forward with a wide, professional smile, completely oblivious to Liam's crisis.

"Welcome to the Vance Agency and the Titans' facility, Miss Sterling!" Chloe beamed, extending a hand. "We are so incredibly honored to have you here."

Liam froze. He turned his head so fast I thought his neck might snap, staring at his PR director as if she had just spoken in tongues.

"Miss... Sterling?" Liam echoed, his voice hollow, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of his lungs.

"Yes, Mr. Vance," I said smoothly, stepping past him and shaking Chloe's hand. I didn't even glance at Liam as I spoke, letting my voice ring out clear and authoritative across the courtyard. "I am Harper Sterling. The new CEO of Sterling Athletics."

A collective gasp rippled through the senior partners. They had been expecting an old, seasoned corporate shark, not a twenty-one-year-old woman radiating absolute power.

But their shock was nothing compared to Liam's.

I finally turned to look at him. His face was completely ashen. His jaw hung slightly open, his normally sharp eyes wide and unblinking. The realization was hitting him like a freight train. The "sweet, normal college girl" he had locked in his penthouse, the girl he had refused to claim in public because she wasn't good enough for his brand... was the heir to a multi-billion dollar empire.

She was his biggest sponsor. She was his boss.

"Shall we go inside, Mr. Vance?" I asked, my tone impeccably polite, laced with an icy detachment that made him flinch. "I understand you have a facility to show me. And we have some frozen contracts to discuss."

"Harper, I—" Liam started, reaching out a hand toward my arm.

Before his fingers could even brush my sleeve, a large, calloused hand clamped down hard on Liam's shoulder, physically stopping him.

I blinked in surprise as Jace stepped smoothly out from behind the concrete pillar, inserting his massive frame directly between his brother and me.

"Back off, Liam. She's working," Jace said, his voice a low, rough rumble.

Liam glared at his younger brother, his shock instantly warring with his temper. "Jace, what the hell are you doing? Step aside."

"I don't think I will," Jace replied lazily. He didn't even look at Liam. His piercing blue eyes were locked entirely on me.

Up close, Jace was even more overwhelming. The sheer size of him, the raw, athletic power humming just beneath the surface of his skin, was intoxicating. But it was the look in his eyes that caught me off guard. There was no shock. No confusion. Just a deep, burning amusement and something else—something dark, predatory, and entirely focused.

He looked me up and down, taking in the crimson suit, the sharp ponytail, the Louboutins. A slow, wicked grin spread across his face, revealing a dimple I hadn't noticed from across the VIP lounge last night.

"Well, well," Jace murmured, his voice dropping an octave, meant only for me. "You definitely don't look like a girl who needs to be snuck out the back door."

My breath hitched. He had seen. He had watched Liam send me out like trash last night, and he remembered.

"I don't," I said, holding his gaze, refusing to be intimidated by the star quarterback. "I prefer the front entrance."

Jace’s grin widened, a spark of genuine admiration flashing in his eyes. "I can see that, boss." He stepped back and offered a sweeping, exaggerated bow toward the glass doors. "After you. Welcome to my house."

"It's my house, Jace," Liam snapped, finally finding his voice. He shoved past his brother, his face a tight mask of panicked desperation. He looked at me, his eyes silently pleading for a private conversation, for a chance to rewind the clock twenty-four hours. "Harper, please. We need to talk. Alone."

"We will talk, Mr. Vance. In the boardroom. With my legal team present," I replied coldly. I turned my attention back to Jace, a genuine, albeit small, smile touching my lips. "Lead the way, quarterback."

Jace chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that did strange things to my stomach. He turned and walked through the glass doors, the crowd parting for him instantly.

I followed him inside, my heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floors. Behind me, I could hear the frantic whispers of the PR team and the heavy, uneven footsteps of a man whose entire world had just collapsed.

Liam Vance's jaw was practically on the floor. He thought he was the king of the sports world, but he was finally realizing the brutal truth: I owned the turf he walked on.
