Chapter 1 of The Penthouse Is All Yours

On my birthday, at a party my boyfriend Asher had been hyping on social media as my "epic surprise," I witnessed the most humiliating scene of my life.

In the spotlight, Asher unbuttoned his shirt, revealing the tattoo we got when we were madly in love—a design of my initials, "C.B."

He announced to the livestream camera and all our guests that, to celebrate his "new beginning," he was having the tattoo covered—replaced with a new initial: "J." For his assistant.

And there she was—Julia, his assistant—standing in the crowd and giving me a triumphant smile. On her wrist, she wore the limited-edition custom bracelet that was supposed to have been my birthday gift.

My blood ran cold. I once thought his heart beat only for me, but it turned out it could beat for anyone.

I silently deleted every photo of us from my phone, wiping every trace of him from my life, then sent him a single message: the penthouse was all his.

Finally, I agreed to the arranged marriage my family had been pushing for years.

1

At nine o’clock sharp, I pulled up to the top-floor private club in Rivera.

After handing my keys to the valet, I smoothed down the custom evening gown Asher had insisted on picking out for me, claiming it was the perfect complement to my skin.

Today was my birthday. It was also our eighth anniversary.

At the club's entrance, a giant electronic screen flashed a message in a loop: "Witness an Epic Surprise! Asher Kane is about to give his queen the shock of her life!"

I clutched the document in my hand—a contract from Northgate’s top law firm to dissolve the charitable foundation I’d co-founded with Asher.

If he somehow managed to give me the surprise I actually wanted, I would tear it up tonight.

I pushed open the doors to the banquet hall.

The venue was a fantasy of crystal and silk, every detail screaming luxury. A champagne tower sparkled, and a string quartet played softly in a corner.

But my eyes immediately found her—Julia, poured into a blood-red, backless gown, positioned squarely in the spotlight.

When she saw me, a provocative smile curled her lips.

Then Asher appeared. He wore a custom black tuxedo, looking every bit the successful man he’d become.

His eyes lit up when he saw me. He strode over and pulled me into an embrace. "Cailin, you're here. Are you ready for the biggest surprise of your life?"

I looked into his eyes, once so full of stars for me. "What surprise?"

He smiled mysteriously. "You'll see."

The music faded. All eyes turned to the center of the stage.

Asher walked up and took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us to celebrate a very special moment."

His voice, amplified, filled the entire venue.

"Eight years ago, I met someone who changed the course of my life. She taught me what love is, what commitment is."

His gaze swept over the audience, finally landing on me.

My heart gave a nervous flutter. Maybe I had misjudged him.

"To commemorate that pure, perfect love, I had her initials tattooed on my chest—C.B."

He began to slowly unbutton his shirt. One. Two. Three.

His chest was bare, revealing the tattoo: an exquisite Gothic font, a C and a B intertwined.

A murmur of admiration swept through the crowd.

But his next words sent ice through my veins.

"But people change. And tonight, to celebrate my new beginning, I’m having this tattoo covered. Replaced with a new initial: J."

What?

He continued, "J represents a new chapter in my life. It represents the person who truly understands me, who supports my career unconditionally."

The spotlight suddenly swung away from the stage and into the audience—landing precisely on Julia.

She rose gracefully, waving to the crowd. The limited-edition Cartier bracelet on her wrist flashed under the lights.

That bracelet. I knew it.

It was a design I had fallen in love with three months ago. I’d told Asher I wanted it for my birthday.

He’d said it was too extravagant, an unnecessary expense.

And now, it was on Julia's wrist.

On stage, Asher continued his "speech." "I want to thank Julia for her selfless support over the past year. Her presence has shown me what a true partnership is."

Thunderous applause erupted.

The room started to spin.

Eight years. For him, I’d walked away from my family’s trust, from a life of inherited luxury in Northgate, to build a life in this city flush with new tech money.

For eight years, I thought that tattoo on his chest was the permanent proof of our love.

Now I knew—it was just a piece of skin he could redesign at any time.

I quietly took out my phone and opened my photo album.

Pictures of Asher and me. Our vacation in the Maldives. The selfie from the day we moved into the penthouse.

One by one.

Delete.

On stage, the tattoo artist had already begun his work. The laser buzzed, erasing the delicate lines of "C.B."

Asher’s face contorted in a brief flash of pain, but he just gritted his teeth and managed a wave to the crowd.

Julia walked onto the stage and gently took his other hand.

"Don't be afraid of the pain," she whispered into the microphone, her voice husky. "A new beginning is always worth the price."

The crowd burst into an even more enthusiastic round of applause.

Someone shouted, "How romantic!"

Someone else whistled.

I kept deleting.

The last photo was a selfie from the night before—I was in the dressing room, giddy with anticipation for his birthday surprise.

Delete.

My camera roll was empty.

Just like my heart.

On stage, Julia shot me a victorious glance, her smile dazzlingly sharp.

I stood up, ready to leave.

Just then, Asher saw me. He stopped everything, his voice booming through the microphone, "Cailin! Honey, where are you going? The best part is just getting started!"

Every head in the room turned to me.

Hundreds of pairs of eyes, all waiting for my reaction.

I took a deep breath and pasted on a smile. "Sorry, I just remembered an important call I need to make. Please, carry on."

"Now?" Asher frowned, his stage presence faltering. "Cailin, don't ruin the mood. This is your birthday party."

My birthday party. And at my own party, he was publicly erasing me for another woman.

"Yes," I said, my voice so steady it surprised even me. "I'm sorry, but this call really can't wait."

I turned and walked toward the exit.

My heels clicked sharply on the polished marble floor.

Behind me, Asher's voice rang out, "Cailin, come back!"

I didn't look back.

After leaving the club, I drove straight home.

Straight to the most expensive penthouse in Rivera. The one Asher bought for us—with my money.

I sat on the living room sofa, staring at the space we had shared for five years.

The imported Italian marble coffee table. The custom French leather sofa. And on the wall, the abstract painting we bought at a high-end art auction.

Everything was so familiar, yet so foreign.

I remembered the first time I saw Asher, ten years ago in the law school library.

He was sitting in the library, engrossed in a book about startups. Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden halo on his brown hair.

When he looked up, his gray-green eyes burned with an ambition and passion I had never seen before.

I was instantly captivated.

It took me two years to finally get him to see me.

After graduation, he chose to start his business in Rivera. I followed him without a second thought.

My father and I had a spectacular fight over it. He wanted me to return to Northgate to take over the family law firm, not "throw away everything for some man."

I stood my ground, even if it meant cutting ties.

After arriving in Rivera, we started from scratch.

We supported each other, fought together, and scraped by for the company's survival.

I used my connections and legal background to help him secure his first investment.

As his tech company grew, I established my own business negotiation practice in the city.

We even started a charitable foundation, promising to do something meaningful together.

That was when we were closest.

But everything changed after his company went public.

He started attending all sorts of high-end social events, meeting more and more rich and powerful people.

He became more ambitious, and also more arrogant.

He started complaining that I was "too aggressive," "not feminine enough," that my boardroom assertiveness was unbecoming.

I tried to change, to be softer, more submissive.

But it seemed no matter what I did, he was never satisfied.

I thought tonight would be different.

Tonight was our eighth anniversary and my 27th birthday.

I thought he was finally going to propose.

Instead, I got this "surprise."

The sound of a key turning in the lock echoed from the front door.

Asher was back.

He was shrugging off his coat as he walked in, his face a mask of impatience. "Cailin, your behavior tonight was completely out of line. Julia asked me if you don't like her."

I just looked at him. "What do you think?"

He came and sat next to me. "I know you might be a little jealous of Julia, but you have to understand, she's an essential part of my team. We have to maintain a good working relationship."

Jealous?

I laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Asher, do you know what day it is?"

He froze, a flicker of panic in his eyes. "Of course I do. It's your birthday."

"And?"

A longer silence.

"And... what?" he asked cautiously.

My heart sank into my stomach. "Our eighth anniversary."

His expression crumpled. "Oh, God. Cailin, I—"

"You forgot," I cut him off. "For the seventh time in eight years."

He opened his mouth to explain, but I kept going. "Asher, why was Julia the star of the show tonight? Why was she wearing the bracelet I wanted? And why did you have to erase our tattoo at my birthday party, in front of everyone?"

He took my hand. "Honey, that's just a formality, for appearances. You know how much I love you."

"No," I said, pulling my hand away. "I really, really don't."

He sighed, his fingers already going to the buttons of his shirt. "Okay, I admit I handled that badly. But you know my favorite way to make it up to you."

His chest was bare. The tattoo that had once been my initials was now a raw, angry red patch of skin, a blurry, diseased-looking mess left by the laser.

"Come on," he murmured, reaching for me. "Let me make a proper apology."

It was his usual move.

Every time he forgot a birthday or anniversary, this was how he won my forgiveness.

I used to be a fool for it.

But now, looking at the mangled skin on his chest, I only felt sick.

I stood up. "I'm going to take a shower."

I walked toward the master bathroom.

The moment I pushed open the door, my eyes landed on it.

And there, on the marble countertop, sat a single diamond earring. A classic Bulgari design. And it wasn't mine.

I picked it up and walked back into the living room.

Asher was waiting on the sofa, a smug, expectant look on his face.

"What's this?" I asked, holding up the earring.

His face went pale. "I—I don't know."

"You don't know?" My voice was dangerously calm. "Then how did it end up in our bathroom?"

"Maybe the cleaning lady dropped it," he stammered.

I couldn't help but laugh. "Our cleaning lady, Maria, is sixty. Do you really think she wears Bulgari?"

Asher stood up, scrambling for an explanation.

Just then, his phone rang, the ringtone shrill and urgent.

He glanced at the caller ID, and his face grew even paler.

"Answer it," I said.

He hesitated for a second, then swiped to answer.

"What? Now?" His voice was laced with anxiety. "Okay, I'll be right there."

He hung up and started pulling his clothes back on.

"Julia's having a panic attack. She's all alone here, Cailin. I have to go."

I blocked his path. "It's almost morning."

"That's the point," he said, pushing my hand away. "Don't be so selfish, Cailin. Julia has no one here—it's hard for her. I'm just helping a colleague. Why are you so jealous? It's childish."

His words were like a slap in the face.

I watched as he put on his coat and walked toward the door without a backward glance.

"Asher," I called out. "If you walk out that door now, don't bother coming back."

He paused at the door and looked back at me. "Is that a threat?"

"It's a statement of fact."

He scoffed. "Cailin, when did you become so domineering? I'm just going to check on a sick colleague."

"On the same day you forgot our eighth anniversary. On the same night you publicly humiliated me."

"I didn't humiliate you," he retorted. "I just—"

"You just chose Julia," I cut him off. "At every critical moment, you chose her."

He stared at me for a few seconds, then shook his head. "You're insane."

The door slammed shut.

I listened to his footsteps fading down the hallway.

Then I took out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in eight years.

"Dad."

"Cailin?" My father's voice was rough with sleep, and surprise. "It's two in the morning."

"I know," I said, taking a deep breath. "Dad, I'll do it. I'll agree to the arranged marriage with the Vance family."
