Chapter 1 of The Neglected Genius: My Ex Husband's Regret

Krystle stood in a corner of the grand ballroom, the velvet box cold in her hand.

The fabric of her beige dress, the most expensive thing she owned, felt cheap against her skin. It was four years old, from her wedding. Around her, diamonds glittered on necks and wrists.

A tremor of excitement ran through her, a secret warmth in the cold, opulent room.

An hour ago, the final federal review for Project Chimera's core module had passed.

Four years of her life, her intellect, her soul, were about to change an entire industry.

Krystle slipped out onto a quiet French terrace, the chill of the New York night air a welcome shock. She pulled out her encrypted phone.

"Chloe, I'm at the gala. Any updates from the Pentagon liaison?"she said.

Chloe Foster, her assistant at the DARPA lab.The reply was almost instant.

"All green, Dr. Reynolds. General Miller sends his personal congratulations. He said this is a game-changer for national security."Chloe said.

A bitter yet proud smile flickered across Krystle's lips. In this world, at this banquet, she was merely Krystle Winters—Damion's wife. And Damion had absolutely no idea that she was the designer behind the "Chimera" exhibition.

She put the phone away and opened the velvet box. Inside lay a custom-made watch, its face subtly engraved with Damion's company logo and the code for "Chimera." She wanted to share her victory with him, a surprise to celebrate their future.

Her eyes scanned the crowd for him.

She found him near the other end of the terrace, walking with his college friend, an investment banker.

Instinctively, Krystle stepped back, hiding behind a large potted plant. She would wait. Let them finish their conversation.

The night wind carried their voices to her, clear and sharp over the clinking of glasses.

"Damion, a toast to you," the friend said. "But honestly, why are you still with Krystle? Everyone knows Dana is back."

The velvet box felt heavy, pulling her hand down. Her heart seized. She forgot to breathe, the tips of her fingers turning to ice.

Damion laughed. It was a sound she'd never heard before, laced with a casual contempt .

"Krystle? She's a good housekeeper. Quiet, obedient, and keeps the house in order. What more could I ask for?"

The friend pressed on. "So the rumors were true? You married her just to provoke Dana, to make her regret leaving you for that Oxford fellowship?"

"Partly." Damion's voice was as cold as the marble floor beneath her feet. "Besides, a man in my position needs a wife for appearances. Krystle, with her simple background, is perfect. No family to cause trouble, no ambitions of her own. She's... manageable."

"And what about Dana's new research lab? I heard it cost millions. Is that you...?"

"Let's just say I support valuable talent." Damion cut him off. "Dana deserves the best."

Housekeeper. Manageable. Simple background.

Each word was a physical blow. The air rushed from her lungs.

The velvet box slipped from her numb fingers.

It landed on the stone terrace with a soft, muffled thud.

"What was that?" the friend asked, his voice sharp with alarm.

"Probably a stray cat," Damion said, his tone impatient. "Let's go inside, it's getting cold."

Krystle watched as he turned, his arm slung casually around his friend's shoulders. He didn't even glance in her direction.

Four years of marriage. Four years of her life, of her devotion, of what she thought was a quiet partnership.

It was all just a contract. An employment.

She wasn't his wife. She was the help. A tool used to taunt another woman.

Her world didn't just crack. It silently disintegrated. A wave of humiliation so profound it felt like drowning washed over her. Tears burned her eyes, blurring the image of his retreating back.

She bent down, her hand trembling, and picked up the box. The watch, a symbol of her highest achievement and her deepest affection, now felt like a mockery.

She couldn't go back in there.

She turned and fled through a side door, escaping the terrace like a thief caught in the act.

The cold of the New York street hit her, seeping through her thin dress, but she felt nothing.

Dr. Reynolds. Krystle Winters.

The distance between those two names was a chasm filled with lies.

She hailed a cab, the name of the place she called "home" a raw scrape in her throat.

The taxi sped through the city, neon lights washing over her face. She didn't cry. Her eyes were wide and empty, her soul scooped out and left behind on that cold stone terrace.

Back in the silent, empty villa, she walked to the living room trash can.

She dropped the velvet box inside.

Krystle sat on the cold sofa in the dark, waiting. She didn't move for hours. Then, she heard the sound of a key in the lock.

Damion was home.
