Chapter 1 of The Nanny in the Master Bedroom

The morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our Beacon Hill townhouse, casting long shadows across the debris of last night's charity gala. Crystal glasses stood abandoned on marble surfaces, their rims stained with lipstick and champagne. The scent of wilted orchids mixed with the lingering perfume of Boston's elite, creating a cloying sweetness that made my stomach turn.

I moved through the wreckage with practiced efficiency, my bare feet silent on the cold hardwood. Richard had already left for his morning run—a ritual as predictable as sunrise. The catering staff wouldn't arrive until noon, which gave me hours to restore our home to its pristine state before he returned.

This was my domain now, this careful choreography of maintaining perfection. Six months ago, I'd been Dr. Margaret Chen, emergency room physician at Mass General. Now I was simply Maggie Mills, devoted wife to one of Boston's most promising young politicians.

I gathered champagne flutes with mechanical precision, my movements efficient despite the exhaustion weighing down my limbs. The gala had been a success—Richard's speech about healthcare reform had received thunderous applause, and the donations had exceeded expectations. I should have felt proud. Instead, I felt hollow, like one of the empty glasses in my hands.

As I reached for a crystal tumbler beneath the grand piano, my fingers brushed against something unexpected. A leather notebook, its edges worn smooth from use. Richard's handwriting was unmistakable on the cover: "Private - R.M."

My heart stuttered. Richard was meticulous about his belongings, never leaving anything out of place. Finding his private notebook abandoned like this felt wrong, like discovering a crack in a perfect facade.

I should have set it aside, left it on his desk without a second glance. A good wife would have respected his privacy. But something about the way it lay there, half-hidden in the shadows, made my fingers tighten around the leather binding.

The notebook fell open in my hands, revealing Richard's precise handwriting. The page was titled "Priority Items" with yesterday's date. Below it, three lines that made my blood turn to ice:

1. Iceland trip - February booking

2. Resolve gambling situation - final payment

3. Remove nanny obstacle

The words blurred as I read them again, my hands trembling. Iceland. Richard knew about my Raynaud's syndrome, knew that the cold made my fingers turn white and numb, knew that I'd rather die than vacation somewhere frozen. We'd discussed it countless times during our courtship—his dream of seeing the Northern Lights, my gentle but firm refusal.

So why was he booking a trip to Iceland?

The second item sent another chill through me. Gambling situation. Richard had always been careful with money, methodical in his investments. When had he started gambling? And what kind of debt required a "final payment"?

But it was the third line that made my knees weak. Remove nanny obstacle.

We didn't have children. We didn't have a nanny.

My mind raced, trying to rationalize what I was seeing. Maybe it was work-related. Richard often took notes about his constituents' problems, their personal struggles. Perhaps this was about helping someone else, solving their issues.

But the clinical language, the way "remove" was underlined twice—it felt deliberate. Ominous.

I flipped through more pages, my heart hammering against my ribs. Most entries were mundane—meeting notes, policy ideas, campaign strategies. But scattered throughout were other lists, other priorities that made no sense.

"Maggie - insurance policy update - increase coverage"

"M's medical records - request copies"

"Accident scenarios - research statistics"

The notebook slipped from my numb fingers, landing with a soft thud on the Persian rug. I stared down at it, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

This couldn't be what it looked like. Richard loved me. He'd pursued me relentlessly, swept me off my feet with romantic gestures and grand declarations. He'd convinced me to leave my career, to trust him with my future. He'd promised to take care of me forever.

But the evidence lay scattered across the pages in his own handwriting. Cold, calculated notes that painted a picture I didn't want to see.

The sound of the front door opening made me jump. Richard's voice echoed through the foyer, warm and familiar.

"Maggie? I'm back early. The park was too crowded."

Panic seized me. I grabbed the notebook, my hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped it again. Where could I put it? He'd notice if it wasn't exactly where he'd left it.

Footsteps approached the living room. I shoved the notebook back under the piano, praying it landed in the same position I'd found it.

"There you are," Richard appeared in the doorway, his running clothes damp with sweat, his smile as perfect as always. "You're up early."

I forced my voice to sound normal, casual. "Just cleaning up from last night. The party was wonderful."

He crossed the room and kissed my cheek, his lips cold against my skin. "You were wonderful. Everyone commented on what a perfect hostess you are."

Perfect. The word tasted bitter in my mouth.

"I'll shower and then help you finish up," he said, already heading toward the stairs.

I watched him go, this man I'd married, this stranger whose handwriting spelled out my potential doom. The morning light seemed harsher now, revealing flaws in our perfect life that I'd been too blind to see.

As his footsteps faded upstairs, I found myself staring at the spot where the notebook lay hidden. Three simple lines that had shattered everything I thought I knew about my marriage, my husband, my future.

Iceland. Gambling debts. Removing obstacles.

And somewhere in this web of secrets, I was apparently nothing more than a problem to be solved.
