The Mafia King's Reluctant Bride

The city had never looked so bright. Or so dangerous.

Elena Rossi, my future bride. That's how they were going to introduce me. And the thought made my stomach twist tighter than a noose.

I stared at myself in the tall mirror of my room in the De Luca mansion, adjusting the black gown Alessandro had chosen for me. Sleek, elegant, deadly. He claimed it made me look untouchable, but all I felt was trapped.

"Too much?" I whispered to no one.

The mirror didn't answer. But the image staring back at me - pale, tense, wide-eyed - said everything.

I was a bride. Not by choice. Not by love. Not yet. But a bride all the same.

A knock at the door cut through my thoughts.

"Miss Elena, sir is waiting in the car," the maid said softly.

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "I'm coming."

The drive to the venue was silent. The rain had stopped, but the streets still gleamed wet under the neon lights. I tried to focus on anything else - the city, the buildings, my own breathing - but it was impossible.

Because he was there.

Alessandro. Sitting beside me, perfect, untouchable, dangerous. His dark eyes were fixed on the road, unreadable, controlled. But I could feel his gaze burning me from the side. The same gaze that had decided my fate the night I saw him kill a man.

I tried to look away, to pretend I didn't feel it.

"You're nervous," he said suddenly, voice low and smooth.

"I'm not."

He raised an eyebrow. "Your fingers are trembling."

I pulled my hands into my lap. "I'm... adjusting to all of this."

He leaned slightly toward me. "You're about to become mine publicly."

The words made my heart hammer painfully.

"Not by choice," I said, barely a whisper.

"No," he said, voice quieter. "But sometimes life chooses for us. And survival... sometimes comes at the cost of comfort."

The silence after that was heavy. Dangerous. My pulse was a drum in my ears.

When the car finally stopped, the air outside smelled of wet concrete and expensive perfume. A red carpet led to the venue, flashing cameras ready, and dozens of men in black suits lining the entrance. Every eye turned toward us the moment the car doors opened.

Alessandro stepped out first, exuding that magnetic, untouchable aura that made people part instinctively. And when he offered me his hand, I felt a jolt of electricity run through me.

I took it.

The crowd didn't notice my trembling. Or maybe they did. But no one dared comment. They were too busy staring at the man beside me - the mafia king who had decided my life for me.

Inside, the hall was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers reflected light across polished floors. Guests dressed in their finest, champagne glasses raised in polite anticipation. And at the center of it all, I felt exposed.

"This is insane," I whispered under my breath.

"You're beautiful," he said quietly, close enough for me to feel his breath against my ear.

I swallowed hard. "You don't mean that."

"I do," he murmured, before straightening and leading me toward the podium.

The cameras flashed. The crowd hushed. And there he was, the center of everyone's attention - and somehow, I was the other half of it.

"Ladies and gentlemen," his deep voice rang through the hall. "Tonight, we announce something important."

I felt like my chest was about to explode. I forced myself to look at him, to read the unreadable expression on his face. And somehow, that cold, ruthless expression made my stomach twist in ways I hated to admit.

"My engagement," he continued, "is not a casual matter. It is a binding, public declaration. Elena Rossi will be my wife."

The words hit like a hammer. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Women whispered. Men nodded respectfully. Cameras flashed endlessly.

I wanted to run. I wanted to scream. I wanted to vanish into the polished marble floor.

But he didn't let me.

His hand rested lightly on the small of my back, guiding me, claiming me. The touch was both protective and possessive, a silent warning to anyone who dared look at me the wrong way.

And then I noticed them.

Eyes on me.

Other women. Powerful women. Women used to attention. Women used to influence. And every single one of them was studying me like a puzzle to be solved.

I felt small.

And Alessandro saw it.

"You will not be intimidated," he whispered, his voice a sharp blade only I could hear.

"I'm terrified," I admitted.

"You should be," he said, a small, dark smile tugging at his lips. "But not by them."

I swallowed, trying to steady my shaking hands. "Then by what?"

His gaze dropped to mine. "By me."

Heat surged through me, unwanted and terrifying.

The speeches continued. Congratulations, applause, clinking glasses. But I barely heard them. All I could focus on was the man beside me - the man who had kidnapped me, protected me, and now, publicly declared me his.

And for the first time, I felt something I couldn't name.

Fear, yes. But also... something else. Something dangerously close to awe.

After the official announcement, we were led to a private area for photos. Flash after flash, smiles plastered on our faces. My stomach churned every time his hand brushed mine, or when his gaze caught mine, sharp and possessive.

And then... it happened.

A man in the crowd, handsome, confident, and clearly used to attention, made the mistake of looking at me the way other men looked at women. Too long. Too intent.

Alessandro noticed immediately.

The air around him shifted. He moved slightly, a subtle but unmistakable claim.

"I wouldn't," he murmured, his lips brushing my ear. "If you value your life."

I swallowed, heat flooding my cheeks. Not from embarrassment. From fear. From the realization that every inch of my life was now under his control.

And I hated... how much that knowledge thrilled me.

The night dragged on. Guests mingled, whispered, admired, and speculated. Every laugh, every compliment, every flash of a camera reminded me of my new reality.

By the time we returned to the car, my legs felt like jelly.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

"I think so," I said, though my voice betrayed me.

He reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. His hand lingered. Possessive. Gentle. Dangerous.

"You survived," he said softly. "And that makes you stronger than I imagined."

"I didn't do it for you," I whispered.

"I know," he said simply. "But you did it anyway."

His eyes darkened slightly. "That's why you're mine now."

I shivered. Not from cold. Not entirely.

The ride back was silent. My mind raced. Heart pounding. Thoughts tumbling like a storm.

Alessandro didn't speak much either. His hand occasionally brushed mine, almost accidentally. Or maybe intentionally. My pulse always spiked when it did.

By the time we returned to the mansion, I felt... changed.

Not just by the engagement announcement. Not just by the public declaration.

But by him.

The man I hated. Feared. And, in ways I refused to admit... desired.

He turned to me as I stepped out of the car.

"Tonight," he said softly, "was the first step. The world knows. They will test you. Test me. Test us."

I swallowed hard. "And if I fail?"

He smiled darkly. "You won't. Because I won't let you."

The words were simple. Terrifying. Absolute.

I knew then, as I looked up at him in the moonlight, that nothing in my life - not the alley, not the blood, not the fear - had prepared me for this.

Being his... wasn't just survival.

It was obsession.

Possession.

And, terrifyingly, it was only the beginning.
