The Luna He Cast Aside Claimed the Alpha Throne

The night Kael turned away from Blackfang’s gates, the mountain exhaled.

I felt it beneath my bare feet as I stood alone on the highest balcony of the citadel — a deep, resonant shudder rippling through the Moon-root, carrying with it something like grim approval. Not joy. Not mercy.

Recognition.

For hours after he left, the mate-mark scar on my shoulder throbbed, phantom pain radiating outward like aftershocks from a wound that refused to remember it had healed. I pressed my fingers to the skin, feeling only the faint ridges of what used to glow silver with Kael’s claim.

He was gone.

And somehow, the world had not ended.

“You’re shaking.”

Nicero’s voice came from behind me, low, carrying none of the command tone he used with his warriors. Just concern — raw and unfiltered.

I didn’t turn. “It’s residual,” I said. “The mark reacting to proximity. It will fade.”

“Eventually,” he agreed. He draped his cloak over my shoulders anyway, the heavy Blackfang fabric settling around me like armor. “But scars are loyal things.”

I exhaled slowly, my breath fogging in the night air. “He knelt, Nicero.”

“Good.”

“No,” I said. “It wasn’t good. It was… hollow. I thought I wanted that moment more than anything. I thought it would make everything feel justified.”

He stepped beside me, leaning against the cold stone railing. “And?”

“It didn’t,” I admitted. “I didn’t feel powerful. I felt like I was staring at the ruin of something I once loved.”

Nicero’s gaze remained fixed on the forest below. “Love doesn’t excuse what he did.”

“No,” I agreed quietly. “But it explains why it still hurts.”

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then the Moon-root pulsed — stronger this time — sending a vibration through my bones that made my wolf stir uneasily.

“It’s beginning,” Nicero murmured.

“What is?”

“Blackfang doesn’t bind wolves,” he said. “It reshapes them.”

---

Training began at dawn.

They did not give me a ceremonial weapon or a private instructor. They threw me into the sparring pit with warriors twice my size and told me to survive.

The first blow shattered my balance.

The second knocked the breath from my lungs.

I tasted blood before I could draw magic to shield myself.

“Again,” barked the ash-gray sentinel who had challenged me at the border.

I forced myself upright, shaking, my wolf snarling in humiliation beneath my skin.

This wasn’t punishment.

This was recalibration.

In Silvermoon, I had been protected by status. By reverence. By the unspoken law that Luna did not bleed in public.

Blackfang had no such law.

By the fourth round, my muscles burned and my magic faltered, silver-black threads flickering weakly around my hands. The warrior lunged again — and this time, I didn’t retreat.

I let the mountain answer for me.

The Moon-root’s echo surged, dark and heavy, not cushioning the blow but redirecting it. The impact reverberated through my bones, but it didn’t break me.

It bent the world instead.

The warrior stumbled backward, eyes widening in shock as he hit the sand hard.

Silence rippled through the pit.

I stood there, panting, the ground faintly cracked beneath my feet.

Nicero watched from the upper ledge, expression unreadable.

When training ended, I could barely lift my arms.

I expected rest.

Instead, the elders summoned me.

They led me deep into the mountain, past doors sealed with sigils I did not recognize, until we reached a chamber I had never seen — not ritual, not war-room, but something closer to a tomb.

At the center lay a stone bier carved with hundreds of overlapping names.

“The Ledger of Fallen Bonds,” the eldest elder said quietly. “Every contract broken. Every oath betrayed. Every Luna and Alpha who believed themselves untouchable.”

I stepped closer, my heart pounding.

At the bottom of the slab, half-etched and glowing faintly silver-black, was my name.

Elira of Blackfang.

I recoiled. “What is this?”

“A warning,” he replied. “You are not immortal because you have suffered. If you forget why this mountain accepted you, you will join the ledger like the rest.”

My voice came out hoarse. “Then why bind me at all?”

“Because the Moon-root does not choose saints,” he said. “It chooses survivors.”

---

That night, the dreams returned.

Not memories — visions.

I stood in a forest I did not recognize, crimson leaves falling like blood-rain as wolves howled from every direction. At the center of the clearing, Lyra knelt before a jagged altar, her hands drenched in silver fire, the stolen heir suspended above her in a cage of bone-light.

Kael stood behind her.

Not as a tyrant.

As a worshiper.

I woke gasping, my sheets twisted around me, my heart slamming against my ribs.

The vision didn’t fade.

It lingered like a warning etched into my skull.

I found Nicero in the war chamber, studying border reports.

“She’s preparing something,” I said without preamble.

His eyes snapped up. “Lyra?”

“She’s deepening the blood-rite,” I replied. “I saw it — not a memory. A projection. The Moon-root is showing me fractures.”

His jaw tightened. “That shouldn’t be possible yet. You’ve only been bound for days.”

“I don’t think the Moon-root measures time the way we do,” I said.

He stared at me, something new flickering behind his eyes.

Not desire.

Not dominance.

Respect.

“We’ll increase surveillance on Silvermoon territory,” he said finally. “If Lyra is attempting to anchor the stolen heir, it will destabilize both packs.”

“Then stop her,” I said.

Nicero shook his head. “This is not a Blackfang problem.”

I met his gaze steadily. “It is a me problem.”

A long pause.

Then he nodded. “Then we prepare for war — not because we seek it, but because you will not face this alone.”

For the first time since I crossed the Frostline Pass, I felt something warm settle in my chest — not a bond, not devotion, but something sturdier.

Belonging.

Not to a mate.

Not to a memory.

But to the wolf I was becoming — one the Moon could no longer break.
