The fluorescent lights inside Harmon & Reed's were the kind that made everything look expensive — the kind that turned even the most ordinary bottle of olive oil into something worth deliberating over. Marble floors stretched in every direction, gleaming like the surface of a frozen lake, and the air carried the faint, deliberate scent of cedar and white rose pumped through vents that probably cost more than most people's monthly rent.
I pushed the cart slowly, methodically, the way a woman who has learned to take up as little space as possible moves through the world — careful, measured, invisible. My fingers curled around the steel handlebar as I navigated the aisles, and with every item I considered, his voice came with it.

Dish soap. Laundry detergent. The specific brand of coffee he liked — the one that cost forty dollars a bag and which I was never allowed to drink myself, because as he had told me the first time I made myself a cup, that's not for you. Flour, because his mother was coming on Thursday and his mother expected fresh bread on the table, and God forbid I failed to deliver that.
Last time, I had been twelve minutes late pulling the loaf from the oven and Margaret Cole had sat at that dining table with her powdered cheeks and her pearl earrings and looked at me the way a person looks at a stain on fine upholstery.
I always knew my son could have done better, she had said, and then reached for her tea as though the sentence had weighed nothing at all.

The total came up on the screen. She counted the change and placed it in my palm, and I stood there for a moment with the coins in my hand, looking at them, thinking about nothing in particular and everything all at once.
“Have a good evening,” she said.
“You too,” " I answered, and meant it. Because I was still, despite everything, the kind of woman who meant the small kindnesses she offered.
Outside, the evening air was cool and sharp, carrying the distant smell of rain. I stood on the pavement with two grocery bags hanging from each hand, heavier than they looked, and looked down the street for a cab.
Daniel had five cars. A slate-grey Bentley, two BMWs, an Aston Martin he never drove, and a Range Rover he used for weekends. Five cars sitting in a private garage beneath our building, and here I was — standing on a pavement in the cooling dark with four bags of his groceries, waiting.
I shifted the bags and raised my arm.
A cab rolled by without stopping.

A third cab finally slowed, the orange light winking into view like a small mercy, and I stepped forward, pulled open the door, and lowered myself and the bags inside.
“Where to?” the driver asked.
I gave him the address and settled back against the seat, the bags on the floor between my feet, my hands loose in my lap. But just as the cab began to pull away from the curb, something outside the window made me go still.

Across the road, beneath the amber glow of a restaurant's awning, standing close — the kind of closeness that exists only between people who belong to each other — was Daniel.

The cab moved into traffic.

“Next right?” the driver asked.
I opened my mouth.
Closed it.
