Chapter 1 of The Lawyer Who Left the Mafia

When I was eighteen, I gave myself to Dante Falcone like a gift, wrapped in blind devotion.

That night, tipsy and aloof, he slid my clothes off without hesitation.

The next morning, he looked utterly composed. "Adriana, I'll take responsibility for you." And he did exactly that.

Dante kept his promise. He kept me close, treated me well, and eventually married me.

I became a Falcone bride, blood-bound before God and the Family in a church ceremony the entire syndicate attended.

Everyone envied me for it.

I had risen from orphan ward to the inner circle, the sworn wife of the Falcone heir, the man the capos already addressed as Underboss.

Every feast-night dinner, every formal sit-down, I sat at his right hand. I believed in the dream, too.

Until that night, at the Family's annual tribute dinner at the social club on Mulberry Street. Dante lost control in public, throwing punches to defend his personal courier from a handsy associate who'd had too much wine. He made a scene.

The local heat showed up.

He got taken in. I bailed him out, using the Falcone name to keep things quiet with the bought precinct captain.

Outside the holding cell, I overheard him laughing with a friend, still half-drunk and unaware I was there.

His friend joked, "If you like her that much, just keep her on the side.

Adriana's obsessed with you. Even if it blows up, she wouldn't dare leave."

Dante let out a helpless chuckle. "She's different," he said. "She's not like Adriana… not that low.

She didn't throw herself at me." He continued, "She has nothing to do with me on paper. I couldn't make her look cheap."

So that's what he thought of me.

That I was cheap. From eighteen to twenty-eight, ten years of my life, I had lived as his wife, his woman.

But in his eyes, I had always been the desperate girl who threw herself into his bed.

A cold draft swept through the hallway outside the precinct, curling around my ankles and slipping beneath my coat like icy fingers.

I had been trembling before, but now the chill seemed to sink straight into my bones, freezing me from the inside out. My hands, already cold, felt numb as I clenched them at my sides.

So this was what I had become in Dante's world. Not his wife. Not his partner. Just the pitiful, laughable slut they whispered about behind closed doors, in back rooms where men smoked and settled debts and talked about women the way they talked about territory.

They always said the Falcone heir was distant, refined, and perfectly composed. A man who never let his emotions slip, who wore his civility like armor, the way his father wore authority. I hadn't believed it before. I thought I knew him better than that. But now, standing here with humiliation still clinging to my skin, I finally saw the truth with painful clarity.

I drew in a slow breath, forcing my shaking body to steady. I swallowed down the bitterness clawing up my throat, pushed aside the sting in my chest, and reached for the door. When I opened it, the murmur of voices inside cut off instantly, as if someone had snapped a thread.

Dante and his friend both turned to look at me.

Dante met my eyes without hesitation. His expression was calm, almost indifferent, as if nothing had happened at all. "Sorry for the trouble," he said, his tone even and detached.

He was always like this with me. Polite. Controlled. In public, people often praised him for how well he treated his wife, how respectful he seemed, how he kept a ward-turned-bride beside him with such visible grace. I used to believe those words, to hold onto them like proof that what we had was real.

But now, after everything, I finally understood.

It wasn't respect.

It was exhaustion.

Exhaustion disguised as courtesy. Distance masked as restraint.

His friend gave me a polite nod as we stepped out of the precinct together, his smile easy and unaffected. "Thanks for the trouble, Sis!" he said casually, as if this were nothing more than a minor inconvenience, as if bailing a Falcone out of a holding cell was just another Sunday.

I returned the gesture with a small nod, my lips barely curving, then followed the desk sergeant to complete the remaining paperwork. My movements were mechanical, my mind distant. I was his wife. Handling things like this, cleaning up after him, standing beside him no matter what. That was what I was supposed to do. That was the unspoken arrangement sealed the day I took the Falcone name.

By the time we finished, it was well past midnight. The streets outside were nearly empty, the city wrapped in a quiet that felt heavier than usual. Somewhere a few blocks south, the social club's lights would still be on, soldiers finishing their drinks and pretending nothing had happened.
