The Hospital Apocalypse: My Patients Became Monsters

The sound of heavy fists slamming against steel doors echoed violently through the main lobby.

Outside, the rain continued to beat against the building in a relentless rhythm, but inside, utter chaos had taken hold.

"Let us out!" a man screamed, his face red with fury as he grabbed a security guard by his uniform collar. "You can't lock us in here with those things!"

"Back off! I don't have the keys!" the guard shouted back, trying to push the growing crowd away. "The emergency doors locked down automatically! I can't override the system!"

People shoved past one another, frantically pulling at door handles and kicking the reinforced frames.

Frantic shouts and terrified crying resonated across the tile floor as panic spread like wildfire.

Rachel took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. 'Panicking will get everyone killed,' she thought, forcing her muscles to relax. She stepped forward, raising her hands to catch the attention of the surrounding medical staff.

"Listen to me!" Rachel called out over the noise. "We need to clear the main hallway! Help me move any stable patients into the back rooms and secure the area!"

Derek stepped up right beside her, placing a hand reassuringly on her shoulder. "She's right," he said, his voice surprisingly steady despite the thick sweat shining on his forehead. "We have to stay organized. I'll help you secure the main floor, Rachel. We're in this together."

Rachel gave him a quick nod, grateful for his support. "Thanks, Derek. Let me check the patient bays first and make sure..."

She froze mid-sentence.

Her eyes scanned the rows of hospital beds lining the nearby wall. A cold chill washed down her spine.

The gurney where the old man had bitten the nurse was completely empty. Blood still stained the white sheets, but the man was gone.

She quickly looked toward two other beds nearby, the ones holding the patients who had flatlined just minutes before the lockdown.

They were empty too.

'Where did they go?' Rachel thought, her pulse hammering in her ears. 'They were dead. They couldn't just get up and walk away without anyone noticing.'

"Derek," she whispered, pointing a shaking finger toward the vacant stretchers. "Look at the beds."

Derek frowned, staring at the empty mattresses. "Maybe another nurse moved them? Put them in a side room?"

"Without us seeing?" Rachel shook her head, her skin crawling. "No way. They vanished."

Before Derek could reply, a blood-curdling scream shattered the air, echoing from the far end of the dimly lit corridor. It was a woman's voice, full of pure terror, suddenly cut off by a heavy, dull thud.

"Come on," Rachel said quickly. She snatched a heavy metal stand off a nearby counter to use as a weapon.

They rushed down the hallway, their shoes squeaking against the slick floor. The rain outside sounded distant here, swallowed by an eerie silence that settled between the walls.

Long shadows stretched across the corridor under the flickering red backup lights.

"In here," Derek whispered, pointing to a treatment room with its door standing slightly open.

Rachel slowly pushed the door inward. The hinges let out a quiet creak.

Inside, a nurse was crouched beneath a metal cabinet, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees.

Her whole body trembled, her eyes wide and bloodshot with absolute horror. She had both hands clamped tightly over her mouth to stop herself from making a sound.

"Hey," Rachel whispered softly, dropping to her knees beside her. "It's okay. It's just us. What happened?"

The nurse pulled her hands away, her chest heaving as she swallowed hard. "It... it didn't attack me," she gasped out, her voice barely audible. "It just stood out in the corridor... watching."

"The old man?" Derek asked, peering cautiously back out toward the hallway.

"No... someone else," the nurse wept, wiping her face with a bloody sleeve. "They aren't just raging around like wild animals. I saw one of them... it stepped behind a pillar when the security guards walked past. It hid. It was waiting for them to turn around. They know where we are. They know how to move without making a sound."

Rachel felt a wave of cold nausea hit her stomach. 'They aren't mindlessly aggressive,' she realized, her knuckles turning white around her metal stand.

'They're hunting. They're smart enough to hide and wait for the right moment to strike.'

This wasn't just a sudden medical issue. Whatever was happening to these patients was controlling them with deliberate, terrifying intelligence.

Suddenly, a sharp metallic click vibrated through the floorboards.

The red emergency lights overhead sputtered twice, groaned, and completely died.

Pitch blackness instantly swallowed the Emergency Department.

The ambient light from the windows was completely blocked out by the heavy metal security shutters.

Rachel couldn't even see her own hand held up in front of her face. The air grew instantly colder, thick with the heavy smell of metallic blood and damp rain.

"Derek?" Rachel called out into the dark, her voice trembling. "Are you still there?"

"Yeah... I'm right here," Derek's voice came from nearby, sounding tense. "Don't move."

A sudden, sharp chime buzzed in Rachel's hand.

She jumped, nearly dropping her phone. The screen lit up on its own, casting a harsh blue light across her pale face.

A strange notification was displayed across the glass in bright, glowing letters:

[HOSPITAL RULE 001]

[NEVER ALLOW THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT TO REMAIN DARK.]

Rachel stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. 'A system rule? Who sent this?' She tapped the screen frantically, but there was no sender name, no phone number, and still no cell signal at the top bar.

The message had been pushed directly into her device.

'Never allow it to remain dark...' she thought, her heart slamming against her ribs.

Before she could turn on her phone's flashlight, the soft, distinct sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway outside the treatment room.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Bare feet dragging slowly across the cold tile floor.

Rachel froze, her thumb hovering over the screen. Beside her, she heard Derek hold his breath, completely still in the shadows.

The nurse pulled her knees tighter to her chest, hiding her face.

The footsteps stopped right at the open doorway.

Silence stretched out, heavy and suffocating.

Then, a quiet, raspy breath blew into the room, smelling faintly of decay.

A gentle whisper drifted out of the darkness, quiet and chillingly familiar.

"Doctor... help me."

Rachel's blood ran cold. The voice didn't sound like a monster.

It sounded exactly like her mother.
