Chapter 1 of The Hidden Genius He Cannot Afford

Eliza Christian POV:

I ran my thumb across the worn nylon of the duffel bag, feeling the chill of the heavy metal zipper beneath my calloused fingertips. Everything was inside. Two battered bags holding the quiet remnants of the life my parents had left behind before their fatal accident on the alpine circuit.

Beside me, my younger brother Esequiel stood motionless. His small, pale fingers had a death grip on the hem of my oversized black hoodie. He was only eight, but the cold, analytical stillness in his dark eyes belonged to someone who understood the precise cruelty of human greed.

The rhythmic, heavy strike of handmade leather shoes against Italian marble broke the suffocating quiet of the foyer.

My uncle, Raymond Mercado, descended the sweeping spiral staircase. His tailored silk dressing gown billowed slightly around his frame, a smoldering Cuban cigar clamped between his manicured fingers. Behind him, his chief legal secretary, Ms. Hayes, carried a thick, leather-bound portfolio, her lips pressed into a thin line of professional contempt.

"Not leaving yet?" Raymond paused on the bottom step, letting a thick cloud of blue-gray smoke drift between us. His eyes raked over my brother and me, and the two travel bags resting on the floor. "I assumed even common freeloaders possessed enough self-awareness to leave before the locks were changed."

I did not flinch, nor did I answer. I merely cast a dismissive glance at him, as if he were nothing more than an ant passing by.

That absolute lack of fear was what unraveled him. Raymond’s jaw tightened, the smug superiority on his face slipping into irritated impatience. He reached back without looking, snapped a crisp linen envelope from Ms. Hayes's grip, and flung it across the entryway.

The envelope struck the heavy glass coffee table, sliding across the polished surface before coming to a rest near my boots.

A cashier's check peeked from the unsealed flap. The black ink was sharp and clear: $50,000.00.

"Take it and clear out of Briarwood," Raymond said, sinking into an imported velvet armchair with the careless posture of a feudal lord dispensing scraps. "Consider it generous compensation for the charity I wasted putting a roof over your heads this past year. Sign the liability waiver Ms. Hayes prepared, and ensure I never see your names associated with the Mercado estate again."

Beside me, Esequiel’s posture turned rigid. I felt the faint, violent tremor running through his small shoulders as his fingers curled into tight, trembling fists.

I placed a calm palm on the crown of his head, applying just enough steady downward pressure to ground his fury. Silence.

Stepping forward, I bent down and lifted the check between my index and middle finger, holding the slip of paper against the glare of the crystal chandelier.

Raymond smiled with satisfied arrogance, leaning his head back against the velvet cushion. "Sensible choice. In the real world, little girl, stubborn pride does not pay for groceries or your brother's future."

"Fifty thousand dollars?" A low, razor-edged chuckle slipped past my lips. I lowered the paper, staring directly through the haze of his cigar smoke. "Uncle Raymond, you quietly liquidated my father's proprietary sports biomechanics patents to the Hudson Group for thirty-two million last quarter. You embezzled his neural rehabilitation research, and you offer his children the price of a used sedan?"

Raymond’s smile vanished completely. The color drained from his cheeks, replaced by an ugly, mottled crimson. "Where did you hear that nonsense? Those patents were legal corporate assets—"

I didn't let him finish.

With smooth, deliberate motion, my fingers gripped the edges of the check.

I tore the paper down the middle without hesitation.

I folded the halves, tearing them again, methodically reducing the five-figure settlement into quarters, eighths, and finally a shower of useless confetti. The entire process was conducted in complete silence, my pulse never rising by a single beat.

I opened my hand. The white shreds drifted downward, scattering across his priceless Persian rug like cold winter ash.

"Keep your pocket change," my voice remained quiet, but the lethal composure behind it pinned Raymond to his seat. "The Christian family will reclaim every single patent, every asset, and every cent you stole. And we will collect it with interest."

"You arrogant little wretch!" Raymond erupted, shooting to his feet so violently his cigar tumbled onto the glass table. "Get out! Leave this house this instant! When you're begging in the gutters of Briarwood, do not dare knock on my door!"

I didn't offer him another glance. I reached down, hoisting both heavy bags into my left hand as if they were made of feathers.

"I've got my bag, Sis," Esequiel whispered, trotting swiftly beside my stride.

"Save your hands for the keyboard," I murmured, pushing open the heavy wrought-iron door.

The crisp afternoon air flooded my lungs, carrying the clean scent of pine and exhaust. Behind us, the heavy mahogany door shut with a final, resonant thud, severing our ties to the Mercado estate.

"Where are we heading now?" Esequiel asked, looking up at me through his dark fringe.

I pulled a sleek, encrypted burner phone from my jacket pocket and tapped a single speed-dial digit. The connection went through on the first ring.

"Miss Eliza," the strained, deeply reverent voice of Stephen Hudson answered instantly. "The estate in Briarwood Heights has been cleared and secured under your protocol. How may I assist you?"

I adjusted the hood over my hair and looked down at my brother, smoothing his wind-tousled hair.

"We're moving into our new outpost," I said. "Prepare the server room."
