The Fake Lunatic: I Played Crazy To Bury My Brother

Carrying a tray of charred pastries, Maid Rosa marched into the kitchen.

She dumped them into the steel trash bin with a heavy, exasperated sigh.

"Miss Chloe tried to bake a birthday cake for the Underboss," Rosa muttered to the estate chef, wiping soot from her apron. "It tastes like ash and cheap vanilla."

I sat silently at a small wooden table in the corner, peeling potatoes with a methodical slowness—a menial task they had assigned to keep my hands busy and my mind supposedly quiet.

I remembered my mother's secret chestnut cake recipe.

It was the only cake Julian had ever actually liked during the first year of our marriage, when I was still fool enough to believe his smiles were real.

I waited until Rosa and the chef had their backs turned.

My hand darted out, grabbing a scrap of parchment and a pencil from the prep counter; I quickly scribbled down the exact measurements for the chestnut puree and the dark rum glaze.

I slid the folded note under the chef's mixing bowl and hurried out the back door.

Later that afternoon, the estate smelled of roasted chestnuts and rich sugar.

The scent was a bittersweet phantom of a life that had been stolen from me.

The chef had found the recipe and used it to bake an absolute masterpiece.

I watched from the shadows of the hallway as Chloe carried the massive cake into the dining room, claiming to Julian that she had spent hours perfecting the family recipe just for him.

I turned away from the dining room and bumped straight into a solid chest.

It was Enzo, the late Don's veteran getaway driver.

He was a hardened soldier of the old guard, a man who had once sworn his life to my father.

I looked up at him, searching his weathered face for any sign of the old loyalty.

Enzo's gaze met mine for a brief, suffocating moment before he looked away, his jaw clenching with an unspoken guilt.

He knew something.

He stepped around me without a single word and hurried down the hall.

That evening, Dante hosted a lavish family dinner in the grand hall under the mocking guise of welcoming me home.

The syndicate's Capos and their heavily jeweled wives sat around the long mahogany table.

They showered Chloe with praise, complimenting her elegant dress, her flawless hair, and her stolen position at Julian's side.

Occasionally, they cast disdainful, pitying glances in my direction. The only exception was my cousin, Siena. She sat quietly near the middle of the table, offering Chloe disdainful glances when Dante wasn't looking, and me a silent, fleeting look of genuine pity.

I sat at the very end of the table, wearing a plain gray dress, staring blankly at my empty plate.

Dante stood up, tapping his crystal glass with a silver knife. The ring of it silenced the room.

"Next week, we finalize the public IPO merging our legitimate fronts," Dante announced, his voice booming across the grand hall.

"At the Succession Gala, Chloe will be the one to ring the ceremonial bell, cementing the new era of our family."

The table erupted in thunderous applause.

I buried my hands in my lap, digging my fingernails into my palms so hard they broke the skin.

The Succession Gala. Dante had just handed me the exact time and place of my reckoning—and the exact moment the trust would thaw.

Escorted back to my cramped room after the agonizing meal, I found a small, cheap burner phone tucked beneath my thin pillow.

Rosa had slipped it in with the fresh laundry.

The screen illuminated the darkness with a single text message from an unknown number.

"I quit the clinic. I have the logs. Tell me when you are ready." - Maria.

Nurse Maria.

She was the only civilian nurse at the syndicate's black site who had ever looked at me with pity instead of contempt.

I quickly deleted the message and hid the phone inside the hollow porcelain doll, nesting it next to the concealed wiretap.

A chorus of heavy footfalls pounded down the hallway, and the sound of military boots on the floorboards cut through the quiet like a saw blade.

Panic seized me. I grabbed the porcelain doll from the bed and shoved it deep beneath a loose, rotting floorboard under the rusted radiator just as my door was kicked open, the wood splintering against the frame.

Chloe stormed in, closely followed by Dante and Julian.

"Search the room!" Chloe shrieked at the trailing guards.

The guards ruthlessly tore my mattress apart.

One of them reached under the bed frame and pulled out a glittering, priceless ruby necklace.

It was a Falcone family heirloom.

"Right there!" Chloe pointed a manicured finger directly at me. "She is a deranged kleptomaniac! She stole it straight from my vanity!"

I shrank against the cold wall, stammering a panicked denial.

"No, no, I didn't touch it," I whispered, shaking my head frantically.

Julian looked at the necklace, then at me, his face a chilling mask of cold judgment.

"She is completely unhinged," Dante stated, weaponizing the staged incident to validate his narrative in front of the guards.

"Lock her in here permanently until she signs the papers. No meals."

They walked out. The violent shudder of the doorframe dislodged a fine dust of ceiling plaster that caught the moonlight; the specks fell into my dry eyes, raising a stinging pain.

As the deadbolt slid into place, I caught a final glimpse of Maid Rosa lingering in the hallway.

She caught my eye through the narrowing crack in the door before it shut completely.

Rosa mouthed the words silently: I saw her put it there.

I sat alone in the pitch-black room, listening to the oppressive silence of the estate.

I paced the length of my locked cage, holding fast to the mental countdown that kept me sane.

Rosa had seen the truth. Maria had the logs. Enzo knew something he couldn't bring himself to say. The allies were gathering—I just had to survive long enough to reach them.

Four days left until the trust thawed.
