THE EMPTY GRAVE

The silence around me was suffocating, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and decay. My legs felt heavy, each step dragging me further into the unknown as if an unseen force tethered me to this dark labyrinth. The memory of his voice—calm, cutting—echoed in my head. "You’ve seen too much."

The faint light flickering at the chamber's edges illuminated the brittle pages in my hands. Symbols and jagged lines stared back at me, their meanings a mystery. But I knew one thing for certain: these papers held answers—and power.

A sharp clang reverberated through the passage, shattering the stillness. My heart leaped as my grip tightened on the documents. I turned, searching the darkness for the source of the noise. The corridor stretched behind me, empty. Yet the sense of being watched grew stronger.

“Run,” I whispered to myself, forcing my legs to move. My shoes scraped against the uneven stone floor as I hurried back toward the trapdoor.

Before I could reach it, a shadow emerged from the darkness.

Ethan.

He stood there, blocking the exit, his silhouette sharp against the dim light. His suit, immaculate, seemed out of place in this decaying crypt, but his cold, predatory gaze rooted me in place. The metallic object in his hand—now clearly a knife—gleamed ominously.

“You’re persistent,” he said, his voice a chilling mix of amusement and menace.

I swallowed hard, clutching the papers tighter. “Let me go. I didn’t mean to—”

“To survive?” He interrupted, stepping closer. The air between us grew thinner, charged with unspoken threats. “Curiosity can cost you everything.”

“You can’t keep me here,” I said, my voice faltering despite my attempt at defiance.

Ethan’s laugh was low, almost mocking. “You think you have a choice?”

His words hit like a punch to the gut. Panic surged, but I forced myself to stand taller. “I don’t want any part of this. Just let me leave, and I swear—”

“No,” he cut me off. The knife’s edge caught the faint light as he tilted it lazily, as if considering his next move. “You’ve already chosen by stepping into this world. Now, you either work for me... or you don’t leave at all.”

Work for him? The absurdity of his offer twisted in my mind, but the weight of his words left no room for doubt. He wasn’t bluffing.

“I’m a student,” I said, desperation lacing my voice. “I don’t belong in your... world.”

Ethan’s smile was humorless. “You think your life matters to them?” He gestured to the pages I held. “To me?”

My grip faltered, the papers trembling in my hands.

“Choose,” Ethan demanded, his voice like steel. “Fight to survive—or die here.”

I bit my lip, the sharp taste of blood grounding me. He was right—I couldn’t escape. But working for him meant giving up everything I knew, plunging into a darkness I didn’t understand.

“What do you want from me?” I whispered, my voice cracking.

“For now?” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “Your loyalty.”

The trapdoor slammed shut behind me as Ethan’s figure loomed over mine. “You’ve made your choice,” he said, his tone final.

It wasn’t a choice at all.

As his shadow consumed the faint light, one thought clawed at my mind: Who is he really—and how do I survive this?
