The Devil's Heir

Elena stepped back.

"I'm not going anywhere with you." Her voice was firm, but her body betrayed her-shaking slightly from the cold, from shock, from everything she had just seen. Atlas Black was already inside the car, he didn't look surprised, he simply closed his eyes for a moment, as if her answer was predictable. Outside, the rain had started to ease, but the sky was still dark and heavy. One of the men in suits shifted slightly near the car.

    "Sir-" he began.

Atlas raised a hand, the man stopped immediately. Silence returned, Elena swallowed hard...she should walk away. That was the logical thing to do, and walk away, disappear, start over somewhere far from all of this. But her feet didn't move, because the words still echoed in her mind. I'm the reason you went to prison, and worse-the video, Ryan smiling like she had never existed.

Her chest tightened painfully, she pressed her nails into her palm.

"I don't trust you," she said again, softer.

This time, Atlas opened his eyes, he looked at her through the open door. "That's fine," he said calmly. "You're not supposed to."

That confused her, Elena frowned slightly.

"Then why are you doing this?"

A pause, Atlas stepped out of the car again slowly, like he had all the time in the world, he stopped in front of her. The distance between them felt smaller now, not physically-but dangerously.

"You think I saved you?" he asked quietly, Elena didn't answer. "I didn't," he continued.

Her breath caught slightly, "I pulled you out of a system I own."

That sentence didn't make sense at first, "What?" Elena blinked.

Atlas watched her reaction carefully.

"The prison you were in," he said. "The case file, the trial. The judge who sentenced you." he paused, "they were mine."

Elena felt her stomach drop. "No..." she whispered.

Atlas didn't deny it, that silence was the answer. Her heartbeat grew louder,

"You're lying," she said quickly, stepping back again.

But Atlas didn't follow, he just stood there, calm. "I don't lie about things that already happened," he said.

Elena shook her head, panic rising now. "That doesn't make sense, why would you-why would anyone-" She stopped, because she couldn't even finish the question.

Atlas spoke before she could.

"You were never the target," he said.

Elena froze, a cold feeling spread through her chest. "Then who was?" she asked quietly.

For the first time, Atlas hesitated slightly, just for a second. "Ryan Carter," he said.

The name hit her harder than anything else. Elena's lips parted slightly, but no sound came out, her mind struggled to catch up. Ryan... was the target? Not her? Her voice came out broken.

    "That's not possible..."

Atlas stepped closer again, but slower this time, controlled. "He stole from Carter Enterprises," he said. "But more importantly, he stole from my father."

Elena frowned weakly. "I don't understand any of this."

"You don't need to," Atlas said. "Not yet." A pause, then he added, quieter: "But you were useful."

That word stung, useful, like she was an object. Elena looked away sharply.

"So I was just collateral damage?"

Atlas didn't answer immediately, and that silence told her more than words could. Elena let out a bitter laugh.

"So what now?" she asked. "You kidnapped me? You want revenge? What exactly do I do in your little plan?"

Atlas studied her for a moment, then he said directly, "Get in the car."

Elena shook her head immediately. "No," a beat passed.

Atlas didn't react. Instead, he said something quieter.

"You already lost everything in your old life."

Elena's chest tightened,

"Don't lose the chance to understand it."

That made her pause, not because she trusted him; but because she didn't understand anything anymore. The rain had fully stopped now, the street outside the alley was slowly returning to normal-people walking, cars passing, life continuing like nothing had just shattered hers. But Elena felt stuck in that moment.

Atlas turned slightly and added, "I won't ask twice."

That should have scared her more, but strangely, it didn't. Instead, it made her angry, she took a step forward.

"You think you can just appear and rewrite my life?" she said. "Tell me everything I believed was a lie?"

Atlas met her eyes calmly, "Yes."

One word, no emotion, no hesitation. Elena stared at him for a long moment, then slowly... she looked at the car. Quiet...She didn't trust him, not even a little. But she trusted her past even less now. Finally she moved, one step, then another. The car door opened wider as she approached, Atlas stepped aside just slightly giving her space. But before she got in, she stopped, turned back to him.

"If I get in," she said quietly, "I'm not agreeing to anything."

Atlas looked at her, "You already agreed," he said.

Elena frowned. "When?"

His gaze stayed on her, "The moment you didn't run away."

That irritated her but she didn't argue. Instead, she got into the car, the door closed behind her with a soft click. Inside, everything smelled expensive and cold, Elena sat stiffly, hands clenched in her lap, Atlas entered after her, sitting across from her, the car started moving immediately. Elena stared out the window, watching the street blur slightly. After a long silence, she finally spoke.

     "Where are you taking me?"

Atlas didn't look up from his phone, "To the truth," he said.

Elena turned slightly toward him, "And if I don't like it?"

Atlas finally looked at her, his grey eyes were unreadable.   "Then you'll understand why you never had a choice."

The car turned onto a darker road, and for the first time...Elena realized she had no idea where her life was going next.
