Chapter 1 of The Devil's Bargain: Blood and Betrayal

The red light brought my car to a stop. As I glanced at the vehicle beside me, my breath caught. There he was—Leo, my husband—seated comfortably with a woman.

“Isn’t that Briana?” I murmured to myself, recognizing her sharp features and polished elegance. She was Leo’s business associate, someone I had met briefly but knew well enough to identify from afar.

My pulse quickened. Compelled by suspicion, I followed them at a safe distance, keeping my focus sharp as their car weaved through the city streets. Their destination turned out to be a high-end restaurant, the kind Leo never took me to anymore.

Through the restaurant’s large glass windows, I spotted them immediately. Time seemed to stop as I watched Leo and Briana, their bodies entwined in an embrace that left no room for misinterpretation. The dim lighting only heightened the intimacy of the moment.

“What is this, Leo?!” My voice rang out, slicing through the ambient hum of conversation and music as I stormed toward their table.

Leo turned sharply, his entire body stiffening. His arms dropped from around Briana as though they had burned him.

“Isabella…” His voice faltered. “You’re here?” He scrambled for words, his usual composure slipping. “This isn’t what it looks like. I can explain.”

But I barely heard him. My attention had shifted to Briana. She remained seated, composed, her long legs crossed elegantly beneath the table. The plunging neckline of her dress, paired with her confident posture, felt like an intentional display.

“Hello, Isabella.” Her tone was honeyed, but the sharpness in her eyes betrayed her. “Lovely to see you again.”

I stood frozen, my breath shallow. In my simple cardigan and jeans, I felt starkly out of place—like a maid accidentally stumbling into a high-society party.

“Answer her, Bella!” Leo’s voice snapped me out of my stupor. His tone was impatient, almost dismissive, as though I were the one in the wrong. Could he truly treat me like this? The question lingered, heavy and unspoken, in my chest.

“Has your wife lost her voice, Leo?” Briana quipped, her saccharine smile giving way to a subtle sneer. As she reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear, the sparkle of a diamond on her finger caught my eye. It wasn’t just any diamond—it was a near replica of the engagement ring Leo had given me six years ago.

My throat tightened. “I’m not mute, Briana,” I managed, though my voice trembled. “I’m just… shocked to see you two like this.”

Briana laughed softly, the sound a deliberate mockery. She placed a hand lightly on Leo’s arm, her fingers lingering longer than necessary. The way she leaned toward him, the intimacy in her gaze—it all felt calculated, as if she wanted to hurt me.

Before I could react, Briana suddenly clutched her stomach, her face twisting in exaggerated pain. “Oh no!” she gasped, her voice frail and dramatic.

Leo sprang to his feet, panic etched on his face. “Briana, are you okay?” Without a second thought, he scooped up her bag and guided her toward the exit.

I stood there, rooted to the spot, as they left me behind. The restaurant around me blurred into insignificance. All I could feel was the cold weight of betrayal settling deep in my chest.

Leo returned home late that night. I sat waiting for him in the living room, my eyes red and swollen from hours of crying. He entered without a word, tossing his jacket and briefcase onto the couch as though I weren’t even there.

“You’re still awake?” he asked flatly, his tone devoid of warmth. “I’m starving. Make me something to eat.”

The audacity of his command snapped something inside me. I stayed seated, refusing to move.

“I just want an explanation,” I said, my voice trembling with suppressed anger. “What’s going on between you and Briana?”

Leo sighed, finally looking at me. His gaze was cold, calculating. “You’re overreacting, Isabella. Briana and I were just discussing work.”

“Discussing work? Does that require hugging in public?” I shot back, my disbelief spilling out.

He shrugged, his indifference cutting deeper than any words could. “We were a little drunk, that’s all. It wasn’t intentional.”

His excuses felt like slaps to my face. The lies were painfully obvious, and yet he delivered them as though I were foolish enough to believe him.

“Enough, Isabella,” he said sharply, his voice taking on a hard edge. “Instead of obsessing over me, maybe focus on making me happy.”

His words struck like a knife. My breath hitched as the weight of his accusation sank in. He wasn’t sorry. He wasn’t remorseful. Instead, he used my inability to conceive as a weapon to justify his infidelity.

“I’m ashamed,” he added, his back already turned to me. “My friends keep asking when we’ll have children. It’s embarrassing.”

I stared at his retreating figure, my heart splintering under the cruelty of his words. To him, I was nothing more than a means to boost his ego—a failed project he no longer cared to fix.

The next morning, I tried to compose myself, pretending nothing had happened. But when I returned home from the Supermarket, the sight that greeted me in the living room sent my world spinning.

Briana was there, perched on the couch with a cup of tea in her hand. She looked perfectly at ease, as though she belonged there.

“Briana?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “What are you doing here?”

Leo’s voice answered from the kitchen, calm and detached. “She’s staying with us for a while.”

My heart stopped. The weight of those words pressed down on me, suffocating. Briana didn’t just want my husband. She wanted my place in her life—and I was starting to fear she might take it.

Then, Briana smiled—an icy, triumphant smile—and set her cup down on the coffee table with a soft clink.

“Oh, Isabella,” she said sweetly, standing up to face me. “Didn’t Leo tell you? I’m not just staying.” She leaned in closer, her voice a whisper dripping with malice.“I’m moving in.”
