After three years abroad, I finally completed my top-secret mission and returned to my homeland.
With official approval, I came back full of anticipation, eager to see my husband and my mother. But when I arrived, the sight that greeted me made my blood run cold—my mother was crouched inside a cramped, doghouse-like structure at the entrance of our home.
Before her was a basin and my mother was lying on the ground like a dog, eating the rotten, foul-smelling food inside.
A woman stood there, laughing as she watched my mother.
“If you want to blame someone, blame your dead daughter. She died young, leaving you alone to suffer here!”
“I’m telling you, you must eat this dog food today.”
Saying this, she slapped my mother across the face.
My mother looked at the woman timidly, lowered her head and quickly swallowed the food that emitted a foul odor.
In a fit of emotion, I stepped forward and kicked the woman away with one foot.
Then, I pulled my mother up. At that moment, my face was covered in tears.
I never imagined that after risking my life for the country, my mother would be locked in a doghouse eating moldy, rotten food.
