The Crown Had My Name, But His Hands Held It

Bianca's words rippled through the crowd like a stone dropped into still water, leaving every face around us stretched wide with disbelief.

"Bianca, is that car really your husband's? No way." One of the old associates from our ward leaned in, incredulous, the champagne trembling in her glass.

Bianca puffed up with pride, her chin lifting to that familiar arrogant angle. She touched the wedding ring on her finger, turning it slowly as if to remind everyone it was there. "Of course it's real. Why would I lie?"

With that she pulled out her phone and began scrolling through photograph after photograph of her and Vince, holding the screen out like a prosecutor presenting evidence to a bought jury. There were shots of them curled together in the leather seats of the car, others of them draped across the hood, all of it staged to look warm and intimate and permanent. The stitching of the interior, the private plates, none of it left any room for doubt.

The crowd drew breath as one. "Dio, it really is Bianca's husband's car. That means Adriana must be the other woman."

Bianca's expression twisted, her brows drawing together, and something ugly and triumphant kindled behind her eyes. "No wonder you've kept so quiet all these years," she said, each word placed like a knife on velvet. "Turns out you've just been playing the side chick."

Every gaze in that gilded hall turned to me at once, a slow tide of shock curdling into disdain. I stood at the center of it, unmoving, the chandeliers throwing cold light down onto the marble while the whispers gathered force around me like water rising against a wall.

"I can't believe it. Adriana looks so put together, and all this time she's been sneaking around as somebody's mistress."

"Right? I used to think she was this cool, untouchable straight-A girl. I even wrote her a love letter back in the day. Makes my skin crawl now."

"Some women play the innocent in the daylight and turn into something else entirely behind closed doors. The second they smell real money, they come crawling."

"Look at her, parading the man's car right in front of his wife. She's eaten up with jealousy. Bianca lands a real Boss and this one comes to poison the wedding."

Even Rosa Bellini turned her contempt on me. Before she spoke she cut a quick glance sideways, checking Bianca's face to be sure which way the wind blew, the way she had always measured every opinion she owned against whoever held the room. Only when she was certain did her voice come out dripping.

"Adriana," she said, drawing my name out like something distasteful on her tongue, "when you're out among decent people, do us all a kindness and never mention that you were once under my wing. I never fostered anyone with so little honor."

The murmuring swelled into a frenzy, drawing in onlookers from the edges of the ballroom, fingers lifting to point, mouths bending toward one another. Some raised their phones to record. One of them turned aside and spat toward the floor near my feet, and the sound of it against the polished marble was somehow louder than all the voices.

Something cold and clean moved through me then, steadier than the heat rising in my cheeks. In one motion I stripped the designer coat from my shoulders, the one that had cost more than most of these people's whole wardrobes, and dropped it into a brass trash can beside the pillar without a backward glance. Let them think what they liked about the gesture. They understood nothing about what I could afford to throw away.

I turned to face Bianca, and when I spoke my voice came out level and low and unafraid.

"You should really ask Vince who the true mistress is," I said, "before you go throwing that word around this room."

She slapped me the moment the sentence left my mouth. The crack of it snapped across the hall, and for half a breath the whole crowd went still, the way a room goes still when a made man raises his voice at a sit-down and nobody yet knows which way the night will fall.

"Do I really need to ask?" Bianca's chin jerked up, and her hand went again to the ring, twisting it, worrying it. "Today is my wedding to Vince. Can you not see that?" She flung her arm toward my car parked beyond the arched doors, her voice climbing higher. "I despise mistresses. Every last one of them deserves to be punished."

She dug a key from her clutch and dragged it across the flawless paint of my car, gouging the words into it letter by letter. Mistress, die. The metal shrieked under her hand, and the crowd leaned closer, breathless, feeding on it.

I looked at the letters glaring back at me under the lights, and a chill traced its way down my spine, though not the kind she wanted. It was the cold, distant recognition of how far this had gone, and how little any of them understood what they were touching.

"You'll come to see," I said quietly, "just how ironic those words are."

Bianca's fury boiled clean over its edges. "You shameless little whore. You steal my husband and then you mock me to my face?" Her breath came fast now, ragged with something that wanted to be triumph and kept slipping toward hysteria. "Just picturing my husband's car under a skank like you makes me sick."

She stooped, snatched a loose brick from the border of the flowerbed, and swung it down against the hood of my car with everything she had.
