THE CONTRACTED DECEPTION: Mafia Vows

Adriana lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling as the past few hours replayed in an endless loop in her mind. Her heart felt like it had been torn apart and stitched back together with threads of ice. Betrayal had always been a specter she feared, but she had never expected it to manifest so cruelly.

Her fingers clenched the soft sheets as waves of anger, heartbreak, and determination coursed through her. Javier’s face haunted her every thought, but even worse was Yesenia—the half-sister who had been little more than a shadow in her life until now.

Adriana wasn’t a stranger to pain; she had grown up in a family that thrived on secrets and power plays. But this betrayal cut deeper, like a blade twisted in her chest. She didn’t sleep much—her mind was too preoccupied with thoughts of vengeance and reclaiming her power.

By morning, a strange calmness had settled over her. Adriana Monero wasn’t a victim. No, she was a fighter. She had learned that from her mother, who had faced countless storms and emerged unbroken.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her expression unreadable as she reached for her phone. Scrolling through her contacts, she found the name she was looking for: Yesenia. Her finger hovered over the screen for a moment before she pressed the call button.

The line rang twice before Yesenia picked up. “Adriana?” Her voice was soft, hesitant.

“Good morning, Yesenia,” Adriana said, her tone light, almost cheerful. She leaned back against her headboard, feigning casualness. “I wanted to check if you’ll still be my maid of honor. You know, as originally planned.”

There was a pause. Adriana could almost hear Yesenia’s mind racing on the other end of the line. “I… I mean, yes, of course. If that’s what you still want,” she finally stammered.

Adriana smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Perfect. I’m glad to hear that. We have a lot to prepare for.”

“Yes, of course,” Yesenia said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Adriana didn’t wait for further conversation. She ended the call with a curt, “See you soon,” and dropped her phone onto the bed. The satisfaction of hearing the hesitation in Yesenia’s voice was a small victory, but it was enough to fuel her for the time being.

She stood from the bed and walked to her wardrobe, selecting a sleek black bikini. Tying the strings with care, she examined her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes were cold, her expression unreadable. She grabbed a book from her bedside table and headed outside.

The morning sun bathed the Monero estate in a golden glow as Adriana settled into a lounge chair by the pool. She alternated between reading and swimming, letting the cool water soothe her skin. Each page she turned felt like another step toward regaining control of her life. She wasn’t just going to survive this betrayal—she was going to emerge stronger, more ruthless.

As the afternoon stretched on, the stillness around her felt almost serene. But then, a voice shattered the peace.

“Adriana.”

Her fingers froze on the page she was turning, her heartbeat quickening. That voice—deep, familiar, and utterly unwelcome.

Slowly, she looked up, her eyes narrowing as they landed on Javier.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The tension in the air was tense, and Adriana felt anger bubbling beneath her composed exterior.

“Adriana,” Javier began, his voice low and remorseful. “I… I need to talk to you.”

She leaned back in her chair, feigning indifference. “Go ahead, Javier. What could you possibly have to say?”

He stepped closer, running a hand through his hair. He looked uncertain, vulnerable—so unlike the composed man she had once loved. “What you saw… it wasn’t what it looked like.”

Adriana raised an eyebrow, lips curling into a cold smile. “Oh, it wasn’t? Because it looked very much like you were in bed with my half-sister. Naked. But please, enlighten me.”

Javier winced. “I was drunk, Adriana. I wasn’t thinking straight. Yesenia came to me, and I made a mistake. A terrible mistake. But it didn’t mean anything. You have to believe me.”

Adriana let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Drunk? That’s the excuse you’re going with?”

“Adriana, please,” he pleaded. “I love you. I’ve loved you for years. Don’t let this ruin everything we’ve built together. Don’t call off the wedding. I’ll do anything to make it right.”

She stood, smoothing the fabric of her bikini as she moved to stand directly in front of him. Her gaze was unflinching. “I’m not calling off the wedding.”

Javier blinked, startled. “You’re… not?”

“No,” Adriana said firmly. “In fact, I’ve already spoken to Yesenia. She’ll still be my maid of honor, just as we originally planned.”

Confusion flickered across his face, and she reveled in it.

“Isn’t that what you wanted, Javier?” she continued. “For everything to go back to how it was?”

He hesitated before nodding. “Yes… Thank you, Adriana. Thank you for giving me another chance. I promise, I won’t let you down again.”

She watched him turn to leave. “Wait, Javier.”

He stopped, wary.

She strode past the loungers to a small table, pulling out a single sheet of paper. “Something we both need to agree on if this wedding is going to happen.”

Javier frowned, taking the paper. His eyes scanned the words, his expression darkening. “This says our businesses will remain completely separate, even after the marriage.”

“That’s correct,” Adriana replied coolly. “The Monero family business stays with me. You won’t touch a single piece of it. And after a year, we divorce.”

Javier’s eyes flicked between her and the paper. “You’re willing to marry me just to divorce me in a year? Why?”

She shrugged. “Because I have my reasons, and you have yours. Let’s not pretend this is about love anymore.”

He exhaled sharply. “My parents won’t see me as fit to take over the cartel if I don’t marry you.”

“And that’s your reason to agree to this arrangement,” Adriana said smoothly. “Sign it, or explain to your family why their precious empire is slipping through their fingers.”

Javier hesitated, pride warring with necessity. “Fine,” he said, grabbing a pen. “But on one condition.”

Adriana tilted her head. “What condition?”

“Nobody knows about this agreement. Not my family, not yours. Even after we divorce, this stays between us.”

She let out a short laugh. “I don’t care who knows, but if secrecy makes you feel better, fine.”

Javier signed the paper and slid it back to her. “Thank you,” he murmured.

Adriana took the document, placing it back in the drawer. “You’re welcome.”

As he walked away, relief evident in his posture, a sly, triumphant grin spread across her face.

She picked up her phone and dialed her mother.

“Adriana, what is it?” Isabelle’s voice was sharp but curious.

“I just made Javier sign a contract,” Adriana said, satisfaction lacing her tone.

“What kind of contract?” Isabelle asked, intrigued.

“One that keeps our family business completely separate from his. After a year, we divorce.”

Her mother’s laughter was filled with pride. “I knew you had it in you, mija. That boy deserves nothing less.”
