In this modern billionaire romance novel, Kara is forced into a PR marriage as a disposable substitute bride. Drugged and framed by her family, she fights back—until Domenick Benton, the stranger from that night, locks onto his target.

The Billionaire's Runaway Substitute Bride Summary

Kara Sexton was only ever a placeholder—an illegitimate daughter forced into a PR marriage with the disabled Benton heir. On the eve of signing her divorce papers, her stepmother drugs her, and she wakes in a stranger's hotel bed, robbed of her dignity and her late mother's silver locket. Fleeing home, she faces her family's cruelty: her stepsister Emilia, who refused the groom over his injured leg, frames her with a counterfeit gown and accuses her of selling her body. But Kara isn't the weak country girl they believe. She exposes the fake dress, tosses a thirty-million-dollar emerald on the table, and shreds the family's hypocritical mask. Walking away from the Sextons, she draws the attention of Domenick Benton—the billionaire stranger from that night, now hunting his target.

Chapter 1 of The Billionaire's Runaway Substitute Bride

Kara opened her eyes—the first thing she knew was that this was not her room, and that she was lying beside a man.

Her head snapped to the side. Sure enough, a man lay beside her, his back a broad expanse of muscle under the thin sheet. Black hair, cut short. A sick lurch of recognition hit her. Domenick Benton. The man her family had just married her off to. The Benton heir she had been told was wheelchair-bound, disfigured, barely a man—not lying beside her in the Waldorf presidential suite after the chaos of last night.

The headache hit a beat later, a dull, sick throb behind her eyes, but that wasn't what held her. She was in a vast, cold bed, the silk sheets pooling around a waist that was bare beneath a man's shirt. Two buttons were missing.

Flashes of memory assaulted her. Her stepmother, Meredith, handing her a glass of champagne. A dizzying vertigo. The man's rough grip on her arm, dragging her through a hallway. After that—only darkness, and a heavy weight pressing down on her, from which she could not break free.

The air was thick, heavy with the unfamiliar scent of sandalwood and expensive cologne.

She didn't panic. She couldn't afford to. Her mind, trained by years of survival in a house that hated her, snapped into cold, calculating focus.

She catalogued everything in a glance: the watch on his wrist—Patek Philippe, the mark of a man who valued precision. The suite layout—presidential, expensive, and guarded. The bloodstain on the sheets—hers.

Not her dress. Her torn, cheap dress. The violation was recorded in every detail, and she would remember it all.

Outside the massive windows, the first light of dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline. The view was breathtaking, but it only made the ice in her veins spread faster.

A scream built in her lungs, but she choked it back, her hand clamped over her mouth. Her own knuckles were white with pressure.

Not from terror. From rage.

On the floor, her cheap dress lay in a heap. Torn. A symbol of her humiliation.

With a trembling hand, she lifted a corner of the duvet.

A dark red stain bloomed on the pristine white sheets.

The sight shattered something inside her. But she didn't cry. She filed it away. Evidence. A wave of nausea churned in her stomach, and for a second, the room tilted.

She scrambled out of bed, her legs buckling. She caught herself on the nightstand, her breath coming in ragged sobs. Then she forced herself to breathe. Slowly. In. Out.

Her hand flew to her neck.

Empty.

The delicate silver chain was broken. The locket—the small, rabbit-shaped silver box her mother had left her—was gone.

It was the only thing she had.

For a single, gut-wrenching second, grief threatened to swallow her. She crushed it. She couldn't afford to grieve now. She'd grieve later. After she found out who was behind this.

Her eyes darted frantically across the rumpled sheets, the plush pillows. She didn't dare make a sound.

The man in the bed shifted, a low groan rumbling in his chest.

Kara froze. Her heart stopped.

Instinct told her to hide. Strategy told her to remember. She memorized every detail of the room—the layout, the exits, the man's face—before she made her move.

Survival instinct screamed louder than grief. She abandoned the search.

Barefoot, she tiptoed across the cold marble floor. Her own dress was unwearable. In the open walk-in closet, rows of bespoke suits hung in perfect order. She grabbed the first thing she could reach—a black trench coat that felt impossibly heavy and smelled of him.

She found her small handbag. Phone, wallet. Still there. Thank God.

She couldn't risk the sound of her heels. She carried them as she crept toward the heavy suite door.

One last glance back. She didn't see his face. Just the glint of an expensive Patek Philippe watch on his wrist.

She slipped out into the silent hallway, pulling the door closed with a soft click.

She ran.

Heart hammering against her ribs, she stabbed the button for the elevator. The doors slid open, and her reflection stared back at her. A pale, terrified face. Frightened eyes. A body swallowed by a stranger's coat.

She looked at that reflection—the girl who had been drugged and violated—and she made a vow. That girl was dead. What walked out of this elevator would never be that person again.

The tears finally came, hot and shameful, tracking paths through her makeup as the elevator descended.

She let them. She needed the release. But when the elevator doors opened, she wiped them away. She had a job to do: find out who set her up.

She was a prisoner escaping hell.

Half an hour later, Domenick Benton woke to a blinding headache.

He sat up, the movement sending a jolt of agony through his temples. His ice-blue eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were clouded with a storm of fury and confusion.

His body felt wrong—sluggish, heavy, as if weighted with lead. A bitter, metallic taste lingered in his mouth. The night before was a shattered jumble of fragments he couldn't piece together.

He had been drugged.

His mind, cutting through the pain, seized on the first inconsistency. The air in his suite was tainted with a faint, unfamiliar perfume.

Then his eyes landed on the bloodstain on the sheets.

His jaw locked. A muscle feathered in his cheek.

He had been set up too. The realization ran like ice water down his spine. That woman—or whoever was behind her—had dragged him into this trap. And he didn't even know who she was, where she came from.

He threw back the covers. There, nestled against the pillow where her head must have been, was something that didn't belong to him.

A small, intricately crafted silver locket. Shaped like a rabbit.

He picked it up. The metal was cool against his skin. One of the rabbit's ears had a tiny, unique scratch, the mark of a handmade piece.

She left this behind. Or she lost it. Either way, it was a clue—a thread he could pull to unravel the entire mess.

He grabbed his phone from the nightstand. His voice was a blade of ice.

"Sean."

The response from his assistant was immediate, professional. "Mr. Benton."

Domenick's gaze was fixed on the locket in his palm. He gave his order.

"Find out who was in the Waldorf presidential suite last night. Find that woman."

He paused, the metal pressing into his skin.

"Whatever it takes."
